  • I took me two years to listen to the album version of this and not break in sobs. Literally. And I NEVER cry, esp at music. Just gorgeous.

  • This was not too long after Letterman resumed the show after 9/11. I was lucky enough to watch it. Letterman was pretty choked up afterward and I cry everytime I see it. So beautiful.

  • @lostlola716 I remember that, Dave got choked up at the end, this might have been the first show back after 911. Beautiful cover, love Tori

  • unbelivable

  • This is so incredibly touching...

  • how wonderful. it's time

  • Her soft voice beautifully complements Waits' great lyrics.

  • This is still, to this day, the most beautiful performance I've seen Tori do.

  • I like that she played this at a higher key than on the album, I personally think it sounds better.

  • simply Beautiful... gotta Love Tori, her voice and her gorgeous piano playing... I love her and her stuff... seen her many years ago and I love her style it is so "different" from most and makes her music that much more special... she is neat to watch, her emotions show through, love that... (:

  • Great simple and insightful comment Chevyrock, can it get any better than that combo? Thanks.

  • Tom Waits+Tori Amos= a perfect world.

  • this gives me the chills. I remember this show was right after 9 11 and about a year after he almost died because of a heart attack. at the end of the performance, you could see letterman tearing up.

  • For me, this episode of Letterman and this performance really came at exactly the right time. This video gives me chills every time I watch it.

  • Very, very few people can cover a Tom Waits song with any degree of success.

Tori Amos is one of those people, and she does it wonderfully.

  • I agree, Rod Stewert ruined Wait's songs but Tori Amos is definately worthy to touch on Tom's material.

  • Amazing. Wonderful. I can't believe I missed it when it aired. I think after a while I avoided all media, I was so depressed about what had happened, so that could be why. So it's great that this is here. Beautiful. Just perfect. Thanks Tori.

  • I remember when this played the first time. Always a classic.

  • I remember this so well, especially the end where she and Dave hug. She's such a class act. Also, pretty tactful leaving off the last verse.

  • Why did she leave off the last verse?

  • things are pretty lousy for a calender girl

THE BOYS JUST DIVE RIGHT OFF THE CARS

    AND SPLASH INTO THE STREETS

and when they're on a roll she pulls a razor from her boots and a thousand pigeons fall around her feet

this is half of it. The line in all caps is sort of evocative, lots of people jumped at the WTC and well, you do the math. I think she cut the last verse to keep the song short, they have all kinds of parameters set on live television.

  • she prob. left out the last verse because she on the tv and she only has so many minutes she is allowed to play.

  • This occurred on Dave's first night back after Sept. 11. This performance was one of those that absolutely stunned me with how beautiful and appropriate it was. Truly moving stuff.

  • thanks for sharing

this is about 1 week about 911
