I remember how awesome this game was when it came out.

I even remember a pre-beta thing they released before anything that just let you walk through the level. You couldn't shoot anything or really do anything but walk around. I had to have spent DAYS just walking through the level.

That depends on how one define as CHEATS! Wall Hacking is CHEAT in my book (become most common in CS 1.6)!!

GLITCHES in the Matrix like Rocket Jumping is not in my book! [5:37] Rocket Jumping!! >=)

Bunny Hopping = Speed Gain but Pro will Air Juggle those w/ Rocket!!

Diagonal Jumping = Further Jump without using Rocket Jumping!

Momentum Jumping = Higher Jump without using Rocket Jumping!

Those are some of the GLITCHES in the Matrix!! ;-)

I believe there was an addon called QuakeWorld that allowed people to play it online with remarkable ease. I also think that there are a few servers still up... and watching this makes me want to go back all over again.

Why is the player changing to the axe when hes not shooting people? I haven't seen that technique before.

its a script to keep your weapon from being dropped in team games when you die. if you die with your rocket launcher out you drop it but if you die with your axe out you dont.

its typically called a shotgun or boomstick script since instead of axe you would switch to the shotgun

god how i used to rock this game :). all new games have tuned down the gaming speed. sad cuz this is just pure perfect action shooting game. most of all i miss the "office" map and "pk14" map from the PainKeep addon. Respect to ID and all Quakers!

Agreed, The fast pace of Quake1 and Quake2 made them highly addictive (not to mention the strafe jumping). Some people just get way too good with the grenade launcher, which I think is the hardest gun to use on multiplayer.

This was the first game with tcp/ip support and was released when the internet became to spread (commercially). It was THE COOLEST THING ON EARTH. I remember the first time I joined an online match... explosions, rockets, grenades, bodies all over the place. And in those days (november 96 or something) Quake was already fast paced. Extremely fast paced. And to this day I think it's still the frenziest game to play online.

I was one of those people that always was on late at night. I would play from 12am-6am (PST) every night after work for a year straight. Then drive home half asleep. XD

Get up about 1pm then next day, work at the internet cafe and do the same thing all over again.

google 'nquake'. It's a package that contains the new ezquake client, bots, maps, graphics, everything except pak1.pak that you need from registered quake. Ezquake runs fine on XP.

Sry for double post, but I gotta say this. As someone previously said, this looks a little bit better than they remembered Q1. That may be because it came out for DOS and running in DOS is probably the way most people remember it.

Later, a Win95 version (GLQuake) was developed which featured OpenGL graphics support. It was also this engine Half-Life 1 was built on. Quake looked awesome with that patch, compared to the DOS version.

This is like one of the funniest multiplayer games ever. I played the shit out of it, starting back in 1997 when I got hooked and somehow it still appeals to me. I would prefer this over most newer FPS games anytime.

I would love to see a sequel to the original Quake. Quake 2, 3, 4 and E.T. aren't true sequels. It was a whole other universe, story and artistic design. The closest I've seen to a new game in Quake 1's style was Painkiller. OMG gotta play Painkiller now... or Quake 1... I dunno :P

This game is quite possibly one of the best games ever released. Since then things have gone downhill a fair bit with most fps'es. They try to tell a good story and make gameplay interesting. I liked the story of bioshock and the gameplay was interesting enough to keep me hooked. So was crysis despite crap story, but Quake 4 seems to be milking the plot somehow.

I say another Quake 3 with the quake 4 version of the unreal engine and classic fragemup gameplay would be top of my list.

you must smoke crack. i agree that the lighting and the level in general looks great, but the characters are just static bitmaps, no animations at all. look at the characters in quake 3, pretty complex models.
