  • South African.

  • Comment removed

  • Just to be clear. Its a dutch accent that he has in the movie. I loved it since im from holland. And it makes sense that he has a dutch accent... In the movie your hear them say "tot ziens" on a awnsering mashine. Witch means good bye. And a few other dutch words later on. It just sounds a little weird. Probably cuz hes from afrika. Jan Smit (some dude in the movie) is a dutch name too :).

  • actually it's Afrikaans not Dutch

  • @milovy Check history of south afrika... Its dutch...

  • @fragmeister2000 No, YOU check. It's Afrikaans, which is a language derived from Dutch, but it is not Dutch.

  • @milovy That is a dutch language. Just like vlaams. Its more like a dialect.

  • @fragmeister2000 its not a dutch dialect. Its Afrikaans. A national language in South Africa

  • why did this get a thumbs down? it's the truth

  • @fragmeister2000 I'm afrikaans. afrikaans and dutch are two seperate languages

  • Nee, Dis nie Nederlands nie, dis Afrikaans. En as jy dink dat Afrikaans die selfde soos Nederlands is, dan sou ek sê dat Nederlands die selde taal is soos Duits.

It's not Dutch. It's Afrikaans. Afrikaans derived from Dutch 4 centuries ago, but it's not pronounced the same, the grammar is not the same and it's not written the same way. If you speak Dutch, then you will probably understand most Afrikaans, but not all, and if you think that it's a Dutch language, then Dutch is a German language.

  • @disekjoumoer You know what. What ever you ppl want. I just compare it to fries. Thats dutch too, and i dont get a word they say. And i can read afrikaans. So i would say its sort of a dutch language. But what ever...

  • By that reasoning, I could claim that all Scandinavian countries speak a sort of Danish - or perhaps that English is not really a language at all?

  • @disekjoumoer

Hmm well I'm from Holland too, you could say this is a dialect like Nedersaksisch or Fries. I know, I know it is a language on it's own, but the only thing he meant that it sounded like Dutch so he made an example of it like it was a dialect. But trust me, the shizzle you just typed, I can explain every word of it :)

  • @fragmeister2000 Jan Smit is also an Afrikaans name, because Afrikaans peoples' ancestors came from Holland. that doesnt make Afrikaans the same Language as Dutch, but in many ways they are fairly close. and I'm pretty sure the caracter was meant to be Afrikaans

  • @oconnornorman307552 Neill Blomkamp has said that he wants to do a sequel to District 9. When you consider the amount of depth and breadth the story possibly offers, if the second is a success, it is likely there will be a third.

  • I'v not have sex with one of these FOKN creatures!

*Touches his back* fok fok fok!!!

    Gimme da fokkin weapons man!

    Dont fokkn luk at meeh...

  • amazing actor!!

  • LOL I love how he said. The matrix.. the first one.

He's really smart. and extremely eloquent. I wish I could speak like him

  • christian bale 2( the looks only)

  • "FOK MAN, I HATE THOSE FOKIN PRAWNS!"

  • ITS TEH SWEETEH MAN

  • Smart man.

  • Copley's final point is quite poignant, never took notice of it before until he mentioned Blade Runner and the Matrix.

  • he says FOCK MAN to everyone including his wife

  • Don't knock the South African accent :P! Although he is putting on an Afrikaaner's accent in the movie, his real accent is that of a native English speaker from South Africa. Just thought I'd note that.

  • everybody loved his FOKKEN accent!! lol

    FOOKN!!!

    SIGN the FOOKNNN Paper!! hahahahahah

    I LOVED IT!!!

    5/5

  • i really thought he was afrikaans, obviously hes a english speaking south african.

  • he is africain

  • great movie !! all in one package !! congrats and tks

  • This flick is a serious contender for Movie of the Year in my book. Action, Story, Metaphor, Moral dilemma all in one package.

Fantastic flick i tell you. It makes it even more unbearable to think Neil's Halo adaptation got shafted.

  • that was a kick ass movie! Did not expect that!! Very intense stuff! But the way he talks... in this interview it kinda sounds like something british... but in the movie?! What the fuck was that? That was totally different from this... the character sounded like some one, who had just lerned english... wut up with that?!? Anyone?

  • It's an Afrikaner accent. It is how South Africans of Dutch (Boer) extraction speak English.

  • Afrikaner accent man. He's still got an SA accent though. It's not brit.

  • he looks like edwin van der sar

  • "You look at Matrix ... you know, the first one?" Because the other two are shite there's no way you could compare District 9 to either of them, LOL! This is a good interview, he's a pretty cool dude. District 9 is a great film, I can't wait to see it again.

Anyone else think he is a SLIGHT resumblance to Daniel Craig? In a teeny weeny way? ... No? ... Just me then?

  • he should get best actor nuf said

  • totally,,, his performance was really good

  • Nice comparison with bladerunner. Amen.

  • fokkin prawns!

  • when he says "fuck" he sounds like he is either from Scotland, Ireland and North England... lol

  • ANO! me an me family wer in hysterics!!!!!

  • North England?

    I don't say Fock.

Irish is the closest to the accient he has. Dutch to me.

  • @flakelorenz02

you're right... its more of an Irish.... with this "Ayyye" of his :P

  • this guy is well spoken and sound smart if i may say so

  • If either him or Rockwell win the Oscar for best actor, I'll be a very happy bunny :)

  • ''or when you look at the Matrix..yknow, the first one''

    haha well said Sharltoooo.

i can see District 9 being a buzz word in the future. Coz it really has invented its own branch of sci-fi...even movie-making itself, you could say. And for an amateur this guy really stood up against the best in the business.

  • brilliant performance

  • This movie is a genius, one of the best sci-fi i've seen so far... Kudo to the production team!!!

Plus I absolutely loved Sharlto's character in the movie, he played it very well...

  • yes! this story, it was written excellently. the story is absolutely genius. The creator's of District-9 are pure genius'!!! The best piece of ART ever created. omg words can't explain the excellence of this film! They are my idols

  • I like his character in this movie, hes not your good looking "Cruise/Brad Pitt" type, but a very unlikely hero. Very real, hes even geeky at first. I love his accent, S-African very funny when he swore, and said certain things. Top notch performance especially for his first film.

  • This movie pulled me in so much, due to this mans superb acting!

forgot i was in a movie theatre

  • This guy deserves an Academy Award. He was amazing for District 9.

  • His character loved to say Fuck, was a bit ott

  • it's the sweetie man!

  • haha get your fooken tentacles away from me

  • holy fook

  • I love this youg actor Sharlto Copley! He was amazing! I want to see a lot more of him soon!!!!!

  • this whole film was just fucking amazing. Forget film of 2009, this is the film of the decade easily

  • this guy is a total badass in the movie

  • very good actor!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • - This is what you called an A+ actor which is soon to be, trust me

    - The way his performance toward his character (Wikus) was realistic and beyond fucking amazing

  • couldn't agree more. the best performances i've seen in years

  • Thanks, I hear you man. Can't wait to see what he has in stored next.

  • Shartlo rocked in D9.

  • starts off a little nerdy at the start of film then turns into a complete badass!

  • Man looks totally different out of character! He was great, such a great actor, I can say that for most of them in hollywood!!

  • this guy kicks ass!!!!!!!!

cant wait to see what he comes up with next!!!

  • Comment removed

  • this movie brings SA director back onto the international radar screen. genious director genious actors, genious friggin movie im getting the bluray

  • dood this guy was hilarious in the beginning. but he did great acting distressed. SPOILER LOL he gets accused of banging an alien "doggystyle"

  • Listen to the way this man speaks, he's a freaking genius. How many actor interviews have you seen where the actor/actress seemed half as witty as this guy?

  • check out my district 9 review

  • hes a really great actor!

  • This is so cool man! Cannot believe it's all from south africa :D.!!!

  • Great actor. GREAT film. I haven't enjoyed a movie like this in quite a while. Bravo!

  • I... I think I love him.

  • me too

  • this man is a GREAT actor!

  • the reason for that being is that he is not from the U.S.

  • His South African accent is cool. Anyone saying "MNU agents, open the door please" without a South African accent is a heretic LOL.

  • wow he look entirely different then in the movie. Maybe it was because of the mustache or something...

    He looks young

  • VERY GOOD ACTOR

  • I agree. (SPOILER!) @ the part when he is forced to kill that alien when he is forced to try out weapons he was truely amazing.

  • AMAZING ACTOR

first time ive seen him too

  • i can't believe this is his first film. this guy was so incredible in this film - he gave so much. something's not right if he doesn't win an oscar

  • He totally blew me away. I hope he can find future projects worthy of his talents.

  • I see this guy did not go to the Ben Aflec School of Acting.Amazing performance. I see a Oscar nom for this dude

  • While he possibly had the worst facial hair ever seen in all moviedom, I can't help but express how strangely attractive he is....anyone?

  • Ooh, definitely. He really isn't bad at all.

  • Sharlto Copley did a very good job in the film

  • Wow. This was probably the best actor interview I've ever seen. He seemed genuinely invested in his character and the content of the story.

  • Honestly this is the best movie ive seen all year. I loved how it touched on many subjects going on today. Really a smart film.

Im also shocked at the fact that i think that this is Copelys first movie- because he is a fantastic actor. I seriously hope to be seeing him in films in the future, hes enjoyable to watch.

  • Copley is beautiful.

  • the movie is great i enjoyed it more than TDK

  • y does everyone love the dark knight so much? just coz heath ledger od'd? i mean no disrespect, it was a good movie but not the greatest. actors/musicians always seem to get more famous/appreciated when they die. but back to the point, i think district 9's worth a look

  • I would like to see Copley nominated for an Oscar for this performance. He drove the entire flow of the movie. He hate him and love him and different times. Awesome movie.

  • I've seen a lot of movies. This is BY FAR my favorite. Such a good moral to the story. And Peter Jackson does a good job of getting the viewer to get an emotional attachment to the characters.

  • Peter Jackson didn't direct,

  • i really like this guy he seems like he would just be a real legit human being

  • for some reason....he has this thing about him that charms me. hahaha.

but this movie was a really good movie. i was surprised

  • This guy was really good for his first time acting. An original and amazing movie, simply put.

  • he was shoking to me very good actor was this his first movie?

  • yep this is his first movie he really did an amazing job

  • I agree with all of those who said this was possibly the best movie all year! I'm taking my mom to see it so I can see it a second time haha.

  • It's nice to see a damn original and classy movie.

This summer has been the worst one I can remember in my lifetime.

Transformers? Terminator? Oh man, what a crappy year.

  • dont forget G.I. Joe and Wolverine and Watchmen

man what a crappy year for movies

Up and Star Trek were the only good ones

  • I actually didn't think Star Trek was as good as everyone said it was. I think it's on par with "Revenge Of The Sith"

    Relatively fun, but stupid.

GiJoe could very well be the worst film I've ever seen. Wolverine is up there too.

Watchmen gets marks for a noble effort and I tought it hit more than it missed. Though it missed often, no doubt.

  • Agreed, GI Joe was absolutely terrible!!

  • Watchmen was not a crappy film!
