I was thinking...do you suppose Alan Moore was refering to Grant Morrision when he was critizing mainstream comics and praising indie ones? Because his critiques were very much in line with what Grant did on Animal Man. Grant including a reference to a popular band...specifically R.E.M., which Alan directly refered to. Animal Man was very psychedellic, and was philiosophical. And it was praised for being experimental and all that.
Grant Morrison and Frank Miller seem to fit that critique WAY too snug to ignore. To his credit Alan Moore very rarely talks about other artists in a negative way, and I have got some of the best suggestions for reading from him, but he is pretty clear here and I agree completely.
I agree with his critique somewhat. At first Animal Man was very dirvative of Moore's work but as it went on it became better and better. Morrison went on to do some very innovative work. I love independent comics (especially the work of Chester Brown) but I think the main reason indie comics seem better is that a small press book has to be good to survive when competing with larger companies. There are just as many bad alternative books as bad mainsteam books., they just die faster.
I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on Morrison. I enjoy his work and his run on Doom Patrol is one of my all-time favorite superhero books. I haven't read much Frank Miller, but from what I have read I'd say I agree with you. The first Dark Knight book was excellent, but everything else I've read by him has been terrible. I do enjoy All Star Batman and Robin, but that's kind of a guily pleasure. I know it's trash, but it's fun trash.
In general I'd agree with you. I mainly read creator owned and independent comics these days because the quality is usually much better. Say what you will, but I also enjoy a good superhero book if it's well done. And I do think there are good superhero books out there, even if there aren't that many anymore.
Frank Millar needs a strict editor to rain him in, ever since he got big hes been given free reign but I don't think he can restain himself from putting to much of his personal veiws witch are more often then not quite aleinating to big sections of comic readers, like how every woman he writes is a whore or a big slut.
Yeah, I've been reading alot of Miller's early stuff recently and it is very good thanks to editors telling him when to tone it down a notch. However, I don't think the decline in quality is simply due to editors giving him free reign (although that's definately a part of it.) His art's gone to hell (compare his recent work to what he was doing 30 years ago.) In terms of the writing he had no editors on Sin City either, and it started out great but degenerated as well. It's really sad to see.
Question to everyone: What was the last time you saw flower bees flying around? Or even see them at all? The last time I saw them was on December 2008. And Einstein said if the bee were to disappear, the world would exist for 4 more years.
I miss this series so much! I wish TVO would air the reruns or even bring it back. This was one of my favorite episodes. Thank you for saving and THANK YOU for posting! When the film version, comes out, I'll be watching [with my fingers crossed].
Alan Moore is awesome...and i'm surprised i've never seen tis program before. As for the early 90s cast list...not bad choices there; especially Will Defoe as Rorschach and Nick Nolte as the Comedian.

Since those heroes are archetypes likeCharlies angels-silkspectre 2, action hero/rambo/commando/james bond-comedian, why not:
(1992 cast)
stallone-comedian
arnie-doc manhattan
demi moore-silk spectre 2
susan sarandon (add on a few years) -silk spectre 1
sting- ozzy
dan ackroyd/al pacino- nightowl 2
de niro (cut his hair, ginger him up)- rorschach
de niro 'cause of taxi driver, and he'd be hanging around with pacino alot, same reason for stallone and arnie i.e. vietnam.
natmanprime 1 year ago
oh yeah and paul newman as nightowl 1!

lol at his cast. They'd have to spend the whole budget of the movie on the casts price tag.

Can you imagine if the cast he suggested was the cast for the watchmen? Like, can you imagine Walken delivering Rorshach's opening lines? LOL.

excluding sting I think this guys picks were spot on for his time.
