@Lonestar809 Bearing in mind there would be plenty of variation depending on their manufacture. However, all originals I have seen in person were extremely robust and would essentially last forever against sword strikes.
What sources or research would you recomend for this? I'm trying to compile a brief course based around the use of a variety of shields from various times and places.
@SamGCampbell Not many sources exist for any type of shield form, however the renaissance rotella is perhaps the best served. You might want to look at Capo Ferro (1610), translations are available online, or mine through amazon. There are also sections on the rotella in Agrippa (1551), have a look at Ken Mondschein's translation. Also in Giacomo Di Grassi (1570) of which there was an English translation does in the late 16c and freely available. Achille Marozzo has a small section about it too.
from Rapier and dagger, no, very easy, from single rapier, a little harder, but not much, its quite an instinctive too use, fsr easier to pick up than the dagger for example.
How much punishment can those shields take if they were made of metal such as the original ones?

If you have used multiple weapons before it is quite quick to pick up. As ZS says though, it does change the fight quite a bit.

Is using them a difficult transition?

It is really interesting to see how the Rotella changes the style of fighting.
