Gillies had this ridiculous reputation as someone who only fought when provoked, that he was basically a clean player. Apparently he was provoked a lot because he seems to have had a lot of fights.
Hockey fights are usually a waste of time. The players dance around the ice like boxers in a ring for a while, finally they come together and swing and miss several times. The refs ultimately intercede and they're escorted to the penalty box to the applause of the home fans, who seem to be oblivious to the fact that nothing just happened.
@bailinnumberguy nah, i dont think with that way at all, dropping the gloves means a lot more than missing a punch and down they goes. It means you are a hero, when you payback to your opponent by dropping the gloves.
I dont care if a fight sucks or not i dont care.
Gillies landed more here but McSorley had his own moment for sure in this good scrap.
DRAW in my eyes, but i can understand edge Gillies too.
@slydogg616 McSorley was originally drafted by Pittsburgh you fucking idiot! Edmonton traded for him to protect Gretzky in September of 1985, after Gretzky was in the NHL for 6 years already!
This was before mcsorely started using an oversized jersey he wouldnt tie down and could easily escape from. I can't knock him for that though, everyone was using somewhat questionable tactics around this time before htey made the tie down rule.
Marty would become a much better fighter as time went by. Gillies clearly won this fight. Odd though that Gillies was past his prime as a fighter and McSorley did not hit his prime at this point. Not a bad scrap.
@radioactivekaraoke Gillies clearly won this? I saw Gillies getting tired and McSorley still punching. This is the thing about hockey fights. The refs come in at a point where one guy is taking over and people say: "Oh the first guy won". The refs should always stay out until they get completely tired (or someone falls). Guys like Mick Vukota made a career out of landing a few quick ones and dumping the guy. Let them go til they puke and you'll see who the real fighters are.
@MrJuha82 solid draw????? my god Gillies absolutely schooled McSorely here; great insight as to why McSorley went to steroids because he got pumped and didn't land a thing. Throwing is a lot different than connecting bud -- McSorley got hit with 20 quality punches, I give him credit for remaining on his feet. He doesn't really land anything here
@buttkick22 Don't bother with justice. He sees things how he wants to see them. If he watched fights in slo mo he'd see that 90% of the punches he thinks landed, didn't. He pretends to know that McSorley took steroids because of this fight? LOL. McSorley MAY have taken roids but he certainly didn't NEED them. All he needed was for the refs to stay out of the fight until his amazing cardio took over and he began pounding his opponent like he did with Daryl Stanley. Gillies was done.
@MrJuha82 draw yr pants and wipe yr boyfriends mouth...p.s. How we all take for granted the helmet entitlement of the tough guys. They should take them off before fights.
I'd say he was Hall of Fame worthy. Sure he had just under 700 points but he did a lot more then just that. How much better were Trottier and Bossy because of him and vice a versa. So I'd say yes.
I did not say it was not a fair fight. McSorley could have gone with the best of them. However, against Gillies I did say McSorley was lucky to have the helmet on. No fun busting your knucles on a helmet; Gillies should have worn one earlier in his career when most fighters had helmets. It is easy to pucnh a guy in the back of the head when he does not have a helmet; not so when he does have a helmet.
You hit the nail on the head. Both guys look like they were discussing drapes or something. McSorley got in some pussy taps in, Gillies no real big punch.
Very Disappointed in this "fight" - I expected better from these two legends.
You're just an Isles Fan. Very shortly after that, Edmonton got McSorley in a trade. (I think for Willy Lindstrom) Marty went on to become one of the most under rated D men in the NHL. all because he was forever seen as a goon
Now I am Isles fan from way back (before they ever won a cup) but I always wonder why people ask this question. Fights usually start out of nowhere and are in the heat of battle. If a player went to take his own helmet off the other guy would use that distraction and pummel the guy while he was trying to take it off.
actually, u were corrected a month ago on ur statement about mcsorely winning 4 cups...once again u are wrong...aren't u the guy who said u witnessed larry playfair cross check richie sutter in the face when in fact that never happened, it was a punch that broke his jaw...yea so obviously i'll never correct ur mistakes again since on top of having little knowledge about hockey, u also throw around childish insults and make up events u "witnessed with ur own eyes"...say what u want i'm done wit u
they both know how to control the other's wings so the punches don't get flyin'.

Then I suppose the whole team goes in, right? Same with the Oilers in the 80's?
You'll need two HOF's. One for great players and one for players on great teams.
