    Jay...

Here I sit in awe as I listen attentively to each and every lyric eminating from your sterling vocal instrument...accompanied by your mighty fine guitar strumming. This made for a passion-driven and heartfelt take on a favorite of mine...but I reckon that you might have already known this fact. Many sincere thanks for presenting this gem in a simple and acoustically-stripped down manner, showcasing it in the very best light.

    Pax,

    Max (Stewball)

  • I am sincerely moved by your kind and generous comments. My sincerest appreciation to you! Cheers!

  • Got a link or something for the Guitar tabs of this song?

  • you can try ultimate guitar tab or else try this for the chording;

    Intro - (D)....(G)....(A)

    (A) old stewball was a (D) racehorse

and I wish he were (Em) mine

    he never drank (A) water

    he only drank (D) wine (G)... (A)

and on to the next verses. hope that helps

    John

  • Thanks!

  • Not really familiar with this one. Great to hear you sing it. Love the horses name.

  • Thanks Steve! Yes this is an old American ditty. We don't have the musical tradition of Ireland and/or Newfoundland, but we try! We not only drink, but we also allow our pets to get drunk also, lol!

  • Thanks very much for that one. The last version I heard of it was by Peter, Paul and Mary.

  • Yes, I think that was where I first heard it too! but I thank you! :-)

  • Good job...haven't heard this one for many a year...*****

  • Thanks a million! It is an oldie, that's for sure!

  • so what your saying is always bet on the horse that is piss drunk befor the race .ok 'gotchya'.

  • lol... yep, it seems that's the safe bet! lol!

  • One of all time classic Americana folk tunes. Excellently performed in the traditional style!!!

  • You are too kind my friend! But these songs are fun to keep alive eh?

  • I do rememebr this song for sure , Right on John it's an oldie but a goodie

    Rocket

  • Thanks Rocket!!! You are a gentleman and a scholar! :-)

  • Hi John!!! I really enjoyed this old tune!!!! I vaguely remember singing this or hearing it a long long time ago!!!!

    Cool story too buddy!!!

  • lol, yes, its amazing what one thinks of when their mind wanders a bit... Thanks again for your kind words.

  • Thanks for sharing your history around this song. I wonder how many youtubers thought Music lessons were a waste of time in our teens?

I used to get my audiences, (childrens entertainment as Cowboy Joe) to sing 'Pick a Bale' as a round. What did I just say? 'Round' Yeah mines a pint !

  • I know a lot of kids did... but I kind of got into it. I certainly liked singing better than lurning two speel. :-) Gosh, I think I'll join you, its got to be noon somewhere.. Thanks!

    John

  • Clever how you manage to have a slight hoof tap on the wood of the guitar, great song, my great, great and not so great grandfather used to sing a very similar song

  • Thank you! There probably are many variations of this one - that's whats good about folk music - if you can't remember it, make something up sorta like it... :-)

  • That was excellent John!!! I can't say I know this.

  • Thanks Pete, yes I think this is an old American traditional ballad. Some people credit the Irish, but I don't really believe it and have found no supporting documentation to that affect.

  • great job..nice cover 5 stars!!!

  • Thank you very much! :-)

  • great job. never heard this song before, sounds great.

    Chris

  • Its an oldie, Some people claim Irish, but I think it is more traditional American. I really can't see the Irish giving their horses wine.... :-) Americans aren't that bright, after all there is a popular song out now called "Beer for my Horses".. lol

  • I haven't heard this one for years its a goody John. Carol x 5*

  • Thank you Carol! Its one I hadn't sang in years also. :-)

  • John this is great!!! It is amazing what comes to us guys while taking a wee:) LOL

    5*****

  • LOL!!! ain't that the truth. Thank you kindly!

  • Great cover and I like your story! I remember hearing this on an old Peter Paul and Mary 8-track. Good memories!

  • :-) Thanks! 8-tracks were the boss eh?

  • Just great as usual!

  • Thank you marco!!!

    regards,

    John

  • I used to love those old weird songs when I was a kid, and still do.... What's weirder than Clementine osrShe'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain or Billy Boy?

  • I know what you mean... somehow they have gained greater meaning since I 'grew-up". (?)

  • funny, I also have to relieve myself like a racehorse at this moment. great job Johnny.

  • LOL!!!! Thanks Danny! :-)

  • Agree with Jane-always liked this one-well done

  • It is a timeless classic. Thanks a million! :-)

  • Hey

    Danny...

When gents such as yourself and Raymond recommend a particularly talented individual,I don't take that advice lightly, for i have the utmost respect for you both as well as your insight into music. I couldn't help but notice, that in addition to John's treatments of traditional tunes,he also has a collection of original works as well. I can't wait to dive into this channel.
