The look Hawk gave when Lansbury was on stage was not a look at all. He was just sitting there with a half grin on his face - probably a natural type of grin that he didn't even realize he was showing.

That's just it - he was just sitting there, while all around him the audience was applauding, most quite enthusiastically. It was rude for him to not even bother with minimal polite applause for courtesy's sake. His refusal to applaud when everyone around him was doing so, even more than his sour expression, is a clear indication of his disrespect and disdain. The camera shot wasn't random; there were plenty of other celebrities that would otherwise have been more interesting to show.

He was a nominee that night. Isn't it possible that he was applauding before the camera got to him but he stopped before others and sat there stewing in a bowl of nerves? Seriously, there's nowhere near enough evidence here to suggest that he was even impolite, let alone a "douche"

The look Hawk gave when Lansbury was on stage was not a look at all. He was just sitting there with a half grin on his face - probably a natural type of grin that he didn't even realize he was showing.
Whoever implied he was "dissing" her is reaching very hard.

That's just it - he was just sitting there, while all around him the audience was applauding, most quite enthusiastically. It was rude for him to not even bother with minimal polite applause for courtesy's sake. His refusal to applaud when everyone around him was doing so, even more than his sour expression, is a clear indication of his disrespect and disdain. The camera shot wasn't random; there were plenty of other celebrities that would otherwise have been more interesting to show.

I think people don't realize how a lot of famous people live inside a little box. They do their own work and all, but they are somewhat closed to many things. They do not watch Murder She Wrote and what not. It's obvious, he is in one of those closet worlds of the rich and famous. You think it's fun to be famous? It may be for a little while, but you could end up like Ethan Hawke: totally oblivious to certain realities and even other famous people. Personally, I like being an average Joe.

ever if you want proof i recommend you watch the 1945 version of the picture of dorian gray film which to me is her greatest ever performance a truly classic film and ethan hawke should have shown her some respect by applauding her as the other stars did.

Let's hope he's got an excuse for being rude to one of the finest actress/singers B'way has ever known. I saw her in the late 1970s revival of 'Gypsy' at the Winter Garden. After 'Rose's Turn', my first witness of an actual, literal show-stopper. Mr Hawke couldn't hope for that honor in 99 years of trying -- and he doesn't have that long. It's Angela Lansbury! Fool.
