@kingpleasure Attachment to your narrow-minded stereotype of what music is and ought to be is crippling your ability to harmonize with the music. Please unlearn everything you think you know about music and come back when you are ready to honestly evaluate this man's perception of reality.
@wheehah Sorry, but every serious sax player in the world runs arpeggios and does exercises like that when shedding. Jazz requires harmony (i.e. chord progressions) and melodic lines to be actual music interesting enough to listen to. There is no melody here and no harmonic cadence so I can't imagine listening to this other than to learn a new practice technique, because lacking any depth it's BORING no matter how nice his tone is.
@kingpleasure if anyone described this piece of music to me I'd probably agree with you. But actually listening to it, I just hear colours, beautiful harmonic movements. And such beautiful deep voice leading.. I find this particular example really stimulating, and what most people do on their shed is not stimulating at all. This is coming from someone who is not that much of a fan of Mark's work as an improviser, it's not really my thing..
@wheehah BTW, this is not to say that the cat doesn't play good music because he does, but this isn't it. You can hear a thousand jazz students shedding stuff like this in the practice rooms of Berklee, MSM, and all the other jazz University programs all over the country.
@kingpleasure Without wanting to enter into a massive youtube debate, the fact that Mr. Turner calls this music (he didn't use the word jazz) and the fact that it has deeply affected many people around the world of different ages and backgrounds, is enough for me. Happy to agree to disagree, because there's nothing about this that I find boring.
That's the sound of arriving downtown so late at night...it's raining....everything is closed...you see her standing in the doorway. You swear it's the woman you've been looking for all your life. You beckon to her. She jumps in the car with you.....asks if you want a date....you ask "How much?" "$100 and you get to do anything you want." You realize you don't have that much cash on you. I love it. Seriously beautiful music.
Normally I download music without paying, but I recently bought a Mark Turner CD. This is the first CD I've purchased in ages, and it was worth every penny
maybe... but when it comes to taste, there is little debate. However you would be perhaps surprised in learning how many share the same impression over this style of playing. Just as many as perhaps appreciate it.
I think is sound is so pure. I love the tone. I know what your saying. Try some of the other stuff on the new album.

This is not an improvisation. It's a practice session. Nice to hear how and what he practices but what about playing actual music?

@kingpleasure With all due respect, there's just so much wrong with your comment...

I am astounded that anyone can play this instrument.
It's almost as if they made the buttons as complicated as they possibly could.
