  • The Dow was at 13,000 in May 2008 before Barry Hussein became the frontrunner for the Demoncrap Party. Since taking the lead, the nomination, and 'winning' the election, the Dow has dropped 6,000 points. If that doesn't tell you something about the man, his vision, and the future of our country, then nothing will.

  • riiight the dow dropped 6,ooo points because of Obama...and predicted his election since May 'o8. good one. Now shut the fuck up.

  • You can't threaten business on a daily basis and not expect negitive results. He has investors afraid to invest in the stock market because they're afraid they'll be next on Barry's chopping block.

Why do lawyers wear neck ties?

To keep the foreskin from rolling up over their heads.

  • I think the commentators in this video miss the point. They are looking for specifics that were not going to get traction in Obama's speech - this was not a State of the Union - but a broad outline of his goals & desires to see come out of the Legislature.

There's no reason he's going to talk about the Employee Free Choice Act. This was all broadly addressed in regards to his views on Detroit and more specifically manufacturing.

Even so Obama's speech was bold and showed vision. Give it time.

  • So, to get America out of debt we're borrowing, creating the biggest loan in the history of the world?

I'd like to buy a vowel, please.

  • This rube Chicago politician voted AGAINST the surge in Iraq ! If that doesn't tell you something about this NoOB epic phail loser nothing will !

  • The FRAUD continues. Simultaneously cutting taxes while bailing out failing institutions by creating money out of thin air that the tax payers a have to with interest. Hmmmm? And congress stands up and applauds and cheers! I'm going to go throw up now!

  • So how does one go about signing up for peymaania's "stimulus" plan :-}

  • Obama is a strong leader, but his cabinet and those he surrounds himself with are not and this will damage his ability to enact effective policy.

  • Can you at least offer up an example of what you're talking about? If anything, his cabinet is made up of experienced Clintonistas (i.e. Rahm Emanuel) which some have criticized as too conservative.

On the flipside, think of the alternative - had McCain been elected - even if he had the most impressive cabinet roster imaginable (possible but not likely IMO ) - we would then have deadlock in govt between a Republican Executive and Dem Legislature.

I'll take Obama's "weak" cabinet any day IMHO.

  • Election's over, finished, so there's no point making the Obama vrs McCain comparisons anymore. Clintonistas, exactly, old school politicians with an old school way of doing things, but these are new times requiring new thinking. That's why I described his cabinet as weak, the last thing Obama needed was partisan political veterans, he needed new blood.

  • Crap.

  • You got it right this time

    God bless

  • The only one who has saved anything in this country over the past decade is Jesus. God warned the borrower will become slaves to the lender.Once China stops buying our debt , what happens then?

  • Comment removed

  • a slave to the lender

  • A deity that warns about becoming a slave to a lender? He must have been talking about himself! Fixed!

  • Oh come on...

This was the exact crisis Jesus was talking about, not one of the 784938 others?

And China won't stop lending money anytime soon because they get huge profits out of it.

  • You can believe to believe what you wish. I can not change your heart only God can.Regarding China our gnp does not even come close to our debt. What do you think Clinton was talking to the Chinese about, the weather? They stop buying our debt we are doomed. Once they lose confidence in our ability to pay it off were doomed. They own us. Do you realize in this computer age ,they simply have to press some sell buttons on the treasuries they own and were done. if we can no longer buy there imports

  • I like everything Palley says, except that the Fed should try to drive down interest rates ! to keep home prices up ........

Until housing prices fall, the 'middle class' is out of luck ...

  • Wouldn't massive deflation spiral into a depression?

  • How about writing down a portion of the debt (creditors lose some funny money), in conjunction with ensuring fair rates of interest, but also putting a lean on the property? Also freeze the price of housing for a few years and grow the productive economy. When the house gets sold years later, when the productive economy has grown to match the housing bubble, you won't see inflation, and Uncle Sam can use the cash to help with the entitlement beast. I probably have something wrong here.

  • From my very own perspective ..... too many people are paying way too much money for housing .... this is an incredible transfer of money from the have-nots to the haves .... it's been everyone in the USs dream, to make money from real estate while doing nothing ...... to remedy the situation housing prices HAVE TO COME WAY DOWN .... else, the 'middle class' is screwed .... note... I own 2 houses, if I didn't, I'd be upset !

  • The financial crisis may be worse than advertised. The government is raising the stakes bit by bit to avoid massive panic. I've been reading a lot of disturbing news about Eastern Europe sourcing an even worse debt crisis than our sub-prime fiasco, with banks in Austria especially susceptible, but with a systemic risk of cascade failure in the entire European system, in which the IMF may have to assume emergency powers that the ECB lacks, as the 'lender of last resort'... scary stuff.

  • The question remains, why are financial elites financing the $700 billion TARP, $800 billion stimulus, and a further $2.5 trillion to finish bailing out the banks, bringing our public debt to nearly the size of GDP? Asia is sitting on 2 trillion in dollar reserves. Is that the main source? Or is it international money coming through the Cayman Islands? BIS? Can't we just have the Fed credit the Government $4 trillion rather than pay massive interest on it? In a crunch would that hyper-inflate?

  • Thanks madebutante i agree with you 100%

  • I am sorry to say that The Real News, to my surprise, has not fully caught up to what's going on. Even though they have in the past invited the great Chalmers Johnson, Gore Vidal, and Ron Paul, among others, and have at least one excellent investigative reporter (Pepe Escobar), they generally keep rolling in muck, such as this video shows.

  • More American Arrogance. I love America. That is the idea and dream of America, of equality, etc.

What ABOUT REPARATIONS TO IRAQ FOR OUR ILLEGAL OCCUPATION. IT'S NOT A WAR. IT'S A FUCKING OCCUPATION. Fire that dweeb of a speechwriter who delivered the factoid that the us invented the car. it was benz...in germany...

  • Come on fucked up America. Start more wars you cant win murder more people. Sell more poisonous drugs to the public. Spend all the tax payers money on bombs for oil. Theres nothing more the Yankees would want in life. Nuke the country then you wont be worried about the new great depression. Join the christians that will save everyone hahaha

  • Audit the FED, audit the FED, audit the FED!

  • Abolish the Fed, abolish the Fed, abolish the Fed!

  • Do you realize that without the Fed the market would have crashed precipitously and a run on the banks would have been inevitable a few months ago?

The Fed is a necessary evil - in an ideal world we wouldn't need them - but in today's economy, a single day's panic can send trillions evaporating in a matter of moments.

I'll keep my Fed thank you very much.

  • Ah! So you know. Of late, there have been a few instances of impending panic and a run on the US dollar and other currencies. The central banks stepped in and prevented those. Then again, they themselves are the instigators of these massive panics. True, destroy the Fed all at once and the crisis would be enormous, worldwide. Many would die. That's why destroying it in one fell swoop would perhaps be too shocking. A more gradual shifting of power away from it, back to the People, is safer.

  • I agree that the Fed in recent years has made mistakes; Prior to the crisis they should have raised interest rates to forestall inflation.

While I appreciate your democratic sentiment, I don't agree that giving it back to the People (if "we" ever had it to begin with - it's Congress' jurisdiction) is the way to go. People, even intelligent ones, are susceptible to "herd mentality" that can easily lead to panic.

I just don't see how this solution would work to prevent a future economic crises.

  • Going line by line:

You say the Fed makes mistakes. In my opinion it's no matter of mistakes, but of immoral and/or intellectually supercilious conduct. No one should have the power to set interest rates at a national level and to create money out of nothing and charge interest on that nothingness. The Fed is a cartel, given life to by the government and protected by it.

Giving back to the People. What I mean is have thousands of banks, all independently run by private bankers, the People.

  • And to spell it out for everyone who tries to make sense of YouTube's commenting system:

All these thousands of banks can only coin gold or silver money. Of course, paper is allowed, but backed by gold and silver. Naturally, there will be good banks and bad banks, and the People will study them closely before trusting anyone with their hard-earned money. If a bank goes bust, too bad. The good banks remain alive. Natural selection. Fraud will be hunted down.

  • I guess it's safe to say you are a Jeffersonian in your world view of Banking being more dangerous than standing armies. :)

While I am a Liberal - I am one to agree with Hamilton is his view of banks. I think it was a central banking system that allowed for a stronger, integrated economy.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree: I support the notion that that Article I's Necessary & Proper Clause gives Congress the right to establish a central bank.

I guess time will tell where things go.

  • Thank you for a civil conversation.

Indeed, time will tell. So far, the central banks are winning; and most now have favorable views of central power. I shall admit I can see why people think that way, and there are people who could do a fine job working at a central bank; but, frankly, an honest man or woman would admit it's a position of power that can easily be corrupted, and, even when intending well, any mistake can have huge consequences.

    Take care.

    PS: Thomas DiLorenzo. Learn.

  • Unfortunately, this gradual shifting of power isn't going to happen, I think. Most people don't understand, often don't want to think, there are hardly any leaders who could slam sense into the Congress, and you know how it goes: first the disaster has to strike, then action follows, often the wrong action (no understanding). You call the Fed a necessary evil. No, it is evil, plain and simple. The system will soon implode; and something worse is going to replace it. Your trillions are bullshit.

  • Obama speaks to congress? No he reads a teleprompter and looks pretty to congress. What a joke.

  • he's reading a teleprompter? let the 26 year old speech writer give his own speech.

  • Damn ! Why does Obama scare people so much ? Tyranny ? Hitler ? Comparing him to those ? That's fucking nuts.

  • Because as Stimulator from Stimulator DOTT TV says, he is the friendly new face of fascism.

He has a facade of progress, but refuses to restore habeus corpus, end torture, allow prosecution of war criminals. These are ALL foundational to what America is...

The saddest thing is that the American people aren't even cognizant of what our rights are and what rights have already been taken away.

  • Anything Obama says should be taken as a lie.

The man is a fraud punk and liar in a cheap suit

  • Translation: He's black and I don't like black people.

    Right? ;)

  • Actually, his suit seems to be very expensive. If he sold it, I am sure he could save an American who is about to lose his or her home. Too bad Obama hasn't watched Schlinder's List; or, if he has, never understood it.

  • The Real News Network + economics = rubbish! If anyone would like to really understand economics & what is going on right now go wach a Peter Schiff video.

  • We should have no taxes in pay checks the

    FED RESERVE IS A FRAUD

  • Every business we bail out should have the wage structure completely redone. The temporary symbolic gesture of lowering CEO pay won't do anything. Wages have been structured to benefit only upper management and shareholders.

When Henry Ford was faced with flat sales, he gave his workers a raise which caused an explosion of units shipped.

  • Maybe we did not listen to the same President Obama, but I believe he also focuses about a profitable and green energy system and insists on rewriting some fundamental resolutions in the health system... These are also some crucial points that I believe our analyst should have mentioned... For instance, we spend 700 billion dollars every year BUYING foreign oil which just adds to the global warming...

  • 1:52 "jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges"isn,t this what hilter did in the build up to ww2?scary

  • Add in the Obama administration doesn't want white males to take part in the "stimulus"

  • Timothy F. Geithner wasn't talking about white males per say. He was referring to the contractors who had close political ties that won them contracts in the Katrina clean up and happened to be white men.

All he was saying was, that current laws need to be enforced that make contractors compete in a 3 contract bid.

  • It's what Roosevelt did in the thirties, it's what Eisenhower did after ww2. It turns out, that you can't leave the infrastructure to a free market it gets ignored.
