the different series are "stages"

First series - first stage

second series - second stage etc.

Battle stage is a special showing digitally remastered battles/races from the first three stages.

Extra stage shows a side storyline from another racing team in the series.

I recommend finding the old fansubs for watching this as they translated it better than the official released version has.
