You know what? Ian Anderson doesn't mind the Hotel California thing and neither does Martin Barre......so who cares!! At the most, you could say The Eagles thought "that's a nice chord progression, we'll write a song around that"
The whole idea of the chords being ripped off by the Eagles is silly (Martin implied it in an interview) and when you listen to Hotel California, it is obviously a great and original piece that stands on its own merits , as even Barre himself said, that it is one of the greatest songs written .
Even if the chords are "borrowed", imitation still carries with it a certain homage paid to the genesis of it all , where Tull , and God , receive the glory !
yeah,..... yeah...... i liked both grooves. but all you great musical ears should work on a hit of your own and see how tough it is! rock and roll is a visious game. oops i plagerised someone. peace love and rock and roll. damb i did it again. please no resonse. hell i can't help it.
I've played these chords last night in a jamsession with my girlfriend on flute! Nice session, but I noticed later on that it was similair to the Jethro Tull song. That's what propably happend to The Eagles too! Great way to write a hit...
Please see all the other Tull Isle stuff. They were one of the few highlights! If you want to see a band on the rise, this is it. If you need more from music after this seek YES and King Crimson
ian anderson, the real father of maynard...how many times must the Tool members have listened to Jethro Tull albums, must have been thousands. Tull should have a wing in the RRHOF, they influenced so many types of music and simply amazing musicians.
Is it just me or does it look like most of this preformance was pieced together from other songs from the night? Cause i can deffently see a lot of my god, Clive loseing his hat then regaining it on his head? i am just curious if it is just me
@ACanette Because he plays and doesn't care about the rest. In a shallow world like ours, that doesn't pay. You want to be famous? Bet on looks rather than talent!
wow, this is rock, I didn't know this guys played like this, they certainly kicked ass for 1970, obviously more influential than they are given credit for, Mahavishnu Orchestra clearly got some ideas from here.
Love the early Tull, Best band ever and The Eagles so ripped off we used to know. Don Felder or Joe Walsh are hacks compared to the very great and under-rated Martin Barre...
Prior to The Eagles, members Randy Meisner & Timothy B. Schmit were in the band Poco, who were billed together with Jethro Tull during 1969/70 at various shows in the US. Perhaps this is where the idea for Hotel California arose?..same key, and chord progressions etc. I've always been a huge Tull fan...seen 'em live 8 times over the last 40 years or so. I'm also a huge Joe Walsh fan...seem him with The James Gang, and as a solo artist. Hardly what I'd call a hack.
@drprogensteinphp Wasnt it Don Felder who was the main composer of Hotel California? And he did not join until 1974. I dont see a comparison here at all mate .
As I said...Timothy B Shmit and Randy Meisner were in 'Poco' (and toured with Jethro Tull late 60s), combined with the fact that the two were later members of The Eagles with Felder...it's quite obvious. Herein lays your "comparison", not to mention the aforementioned similarities with chord progressions etc. Bottom line...The Eagles borrowed (for lack of a better word) the Jethro Tull song. It's easy to grasp this...if you have two fully functional ears, it even easier.
omfg 4:13 - 4:25 is just pure sex, with that bass line.

The part from 1:30 to 2:18 is just so fing amazing... the flute solo, guitar solo... the drummer bashing the drums. The essence of rock.

Now we know where Don Felder got the chord progression for "Hotel California".

This must be the performance that encouraged the song "Play In Time," which, in itself, was a response to some music hacks criticism.
Superb band - all incarnations, that is, IMHO
