Use multiple senses to learn is the message. Just please tell me why we need a program. Why not sing songs, play itouch spelling games, read and write in the home. It is not rocket science.
@justinbr1 Indeed, the songs, touch spelling games, reading and writing are great, the SSR&W program offers much more, however, there are many, many avenues to the brain which are important to access while learning this most important skill. This is a direct, systematic, explicit, phonetic program which incorporates every discipline to bring fluency and a very high level of literacy. The problem with picking and choosing rather than following the system is that you will miss some things.
I've recently learned about this wonderful program, and had a chance to speak with Sue Dickson, the program's originator. I'm convinced you can't do better than Sing, Spell, Read & Write. Please, people, do not even think about Sight Words, Dolch Words, and the rest--all claptrap ("The Big Stupid," as I've called it in an article). There are many fine phonics programs for you to consider. What sets this one apart is the use of music and singing.
@BruceDeitrickPrice Thank you Bruce, parents and teachers are the victims of poor curriculum choices by their school districts. Many of these people who are in charge have NEVER taught and if they have they have certainly never taught kids to read, Sing, Spell, Read & Write is a sure thing and works all the time! The Curriculum Directors in schools and Reading Specialists ought to be fired for poor test scores, NOT the teachers!
I remember the songs from when I was 3 years old because my mom was teaching my brother so he could start school at the age of 4 because his birthday was late. He was on a third grade reading level when he was tested. I am using this method with my korean students.
@monilove5 Glad you are still using this program, pass this important information on to all your teachers and tutors, we CAN get everyone reading fluently with this program! Thanks for posting and be sure to like this video! Christine Damico
I am a public school ESOL self contained program and do not like the Houghton Mifflin program. Yes, they are still using whole language and it is terrible. When these kids reach 3rd grade they lack in fluency. the district benchmarks are geared toward our standardized test called FCAT. I've been searching and digging and teaching phonics to my children. I have many who have been passed along since kindergarten and can't read, under the excuse of "they're ESOL/ELL".
@1falconeye2 Dear Brave Teacher, Sing, Spell, Read & Write WILL help your kids score well on the FCAT. Call me or email again here (800) 541-3245 - I will help guide you, for free. I want to see your students prove everyone wrong!!!
I learned to read in homeschool when I was 5 on this program. My niece, who is 5, finished this program just two months ago. She is now entering in to the 1st grade! I have my son, who's 3, singing the songs I sang when I was a child and writing out his letters. He's doing so well. I have to buy the program again and I'm excited to teach my children through this program. I can't recommend it enough!
I would like to know how this teacher was able to use this in the classroom. Where I am...what is chosen to be used by the school district is what has to be used in the classroom.
Yes, but long ago when I started teaching in the 1990's, somehow, I was able to convince the principal, but most importantly the parents of the need for this program in my classroom. When your parents are behind you, and you've educated them about the program that is in place, they have the muscle to command whatever they want. Course I was taking a big risk, but it was well worth it and the principal ended up standing behind the program because test scores went up!
And now, I'm a Reading Specialist at a school where I use Sing, Spell, Read & Write all day long with First and Second Graders who are not catching on with the Basal. Of course, the teachers could use this in their classrooms, but knowing how to group your kids and manage a classroom requires training, which of course the school system doesn't do right now. What program is your district using?
Thanks reedmom, this program is still the best on the market and I'm SURE your kids were moved along happily and quickly with Sing, Spell, Read & Write! Would love to hear from your son the philosophy professor, tell him to pop in and say hello! Thanks!
I used this program while homeschooling my oldest son for Kindergarten and 1st Grade. I loved it! My 2nd son also learned many of the concepts while listening to the songs. Now, my two boys are in public school. Their teachers are amazed at how well they are reading (at least a year above grade level) and how well they can spell. I especially like how SSRW teaches the CORRECT letter formation. Go volunteer in an elementary classroom and you'll see how many kids are using incorrect formation!
The teachers are powerless because the "Reading Specialist" in your district chose the curriculum and EVERYONE must follow. Therefore, if you want this program in your schools, you MUST speak with your Board and get that Reading Specialist to add Sing, Spell, Read & Write into your curriculum. It WORKS and teachers LOVE it!!! Glad your boys learned properly, yet I'm sad that ALL kids are not using this program.
I used this with my homeschooled children. They now read beaurtifully. We decided to use this with our youngest autistic son. He is unable to speak but can now point correctly to the letters. He will read and write regardless of his speaking ability because of this unique program. The integration of music and pointing makes this useful for the autistic that cannot pronounce properly.
So TRUE!!! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have also used it successfully with many students. I wish it could be used by all reading teachers. It would save a lot of time and energy.
A wonderful presentation. Sing, Spell, Read and Write is one of the very best phonics programs ever developed. I am delighted that a high profile publisher like Pearson is keeping it in print. Every teacher should find teaching beginning read the same joy and success as this courageous young teacher. Notice that she had previously taught whole-language. Don Potter

I taught my kids with this program about 26 years ago. My son is now a philosophy professor! Probably no connection, but they all read very well.
