@letranger86 Because Duane didn't play it the same every night. He wouldn't be paying tribute to Duane, he'd be copying what he did note for note and that's not what ABB is about.
@letranger86 actually Derek is pretty much a genius. Why play it exactly the same all the time? Doesn't make much sense from a musical and improvisational point of view. He's not trying to do it better than Duane, he's trying to make it his own which he definitely does
@opsopcopolis I was born in 1947 and saw the Allman Brothers many times in 1969,70 and 71 and today the band sounds like three old tired men playing with some kids who are actually into another bag of music. Today's Allman Brothers may sound hot to young cats but put ANY version of this song or Liz Reed or Done Somebody Wrong etc from the Fillmore album or the live tracks on Eat A Peach and it is clear the original ABB is way better than this version. I think the early 90's version came closest

why can't derek trucks just play it like duane did? you're not a genius derek. you're not going to improve upon duane's riff so why even try?

The opening song from the Allmans stint at the Beacon
How many times over forty years did the people in the
audience sing this song in the car, echoing the cassette tape in the dash,
the CD in the dash, or drunken at some bar at 1:00am...and now at the Beacon!
The guys on stage, hearing Derek Trucks play those lines,
have got to be thinking about Duane and 1971 at the Fillmore.
And a special few in the audience that night may have been at both!!
