  • You have nailed it with your video, it takes home to our small white washed cottage and it's a hot summer in the 70s. Thank you for this upload.

May all beings be happy !

  • I met Ray Laidlaw last year and he was so unlike a rock star, just a decent Geordie bloke.

  • Great band!

  • I was named after this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ZivaInNCISRox me too, I've always loved this song but only found out I was named after it a year ago lol

  • still a fantastic song even now after all these years sitting here in australia takes me back to the north east where i grew up !

  • After hearing about ex lindisfarne manager barry mckay's home in sunningdale berkshire called tresanton and the murder that took place there in november 2010, I wanted to see how he made his fortune, this band is amazing... I love this track.. Timeless

  • my mum named me after this song :)

  • roderick usher was the third best billiards player in harbottle workingmens club.he worked as a rivetter down swan hunters for over 30 years. he died of a broken heart when lady E ran of with bert posstlewaite the local coal merchant!!!

  • @mrralvintwerp if you've made that up,your a comedic genius. but if its true,which i dont believe,then i am duly chastened ;)

  • @mrralvintwerp Do you write for Last of the Summer Wine? Because that was total SHITE

  • Fantastic song from a fantastic band from the north east.

  • I have to ask... who is the 'Roderick Usher' they refer to in the song?

  • @Simes158 He's a character from 'The Fall of the House of Usher' by Edgar Allan Poe.

  • Beautiful song - admit I had almost forgotten it til I came across this clip. I used to love this song when I was at School and they used to play it on the radio all the time. So atmospheric. Thanks for sharing it.

  • After all these years its still beautiful and I am dancing like I used to even if now I am considered dancing like a granny at a wedding

  • Comment removed

  • I've loved this song for longer than I can remember... I was great growing up with older brothers and sisters in the 70's who would play me this stuff, drink sherry and put me to bed.. good times :)

  • Pure magic.

  • CLASS.

  • Salut,

  • This song, and Eleanor Rigby, is the reason my Dad named me Eleanor..

  • @Norris3MCR

Really? I was named after Eleanor of Aquitaine.

  • @TheUltimateWhistle That was another reason I was too! When I told my Dad I'd found this song again he reminded me :) Btw high five for having the same name.. do you like it? Or shorten it?

  • @Norris3MCR

Both, actually. I like the name but the only reason my mother agreed to name me that was if they called me Ellie (sadly, after Ellie Mae from the Beverly Hillbillies) so I've been called Ellie from birth.

  • @TheUltimateWhistle Oh right :) My Dad refuses to call me Ellie, but that's what I'm known as at school (thankfully)

  • Its from 3:40 onwards that gets me everytime. Goosebumps galore!

  • one of the most underated groups ever.

  • @hales51

    I hear ya buddy.

  • Why waste our lives commenting about the likes of Justin Bieber, a nonentity that will be gone & forgotten very soon. How many youtube hits do you think he will get in 5 years time never mind 40 years time?

This band is from an age when you actually had to be talented & not just sound the same as everyone else.

  • @phillabels well said

  • @alargedog now thats well said mate xfactor live download top 40 all bollox. These guys on here have sung in the dirtiest dives and learned alot they didnt sprout up on the disney channel then play the 02 in 3months i blame the likes of simon "am up ma own ass cowell"

  • @phillabels this comment is so true. who is number one now? nobody knows its all downloads etc. this was when people had natural talent. i would not even know how to spell this kids last name as he is so irrelivent to musical progess

  • @phillabels BRING BACK THE GOOD TIMES

  • @phillabels Well said!

  • @phillabels he will be so sad man in the age of 45 - be sure !

  • @phillabels yep !! thats for sure, i was 16 when i first heard lindisfarne we music talent back then. today its just plastic crap.

  • @phillabels Hear hear. I swear, the only reason Justin Bieber is famous is because of people commenting how much better other things on YouTube are! They're not even comparing like with like - there were plenty of rubbish pop acts in the 70s, and plenty of decent folk-rock acts today. Fleet Foxes and Linisfarne would at least be a sensible comparison.

  • @phillabels

Yeah all these X Factor nobodies that no one will remember next year. Same as that pathetic duo Jedward have to appear in Big Brother to keep their pointless careers alive. Bands like Lindisfarne will live on forever.

  • @phillabels you wasted your time mentioning that wee boy, please stop it folks and enjoy the songs we're listening to. and comment only on them. otherwise move on.

  • @phillabels shut the fuck up about nonentities and just listen to the song you sought out. FFS.

  • @combatrocks82

If you have nothing intelligent to say, just a foull mouthed rant then I suggest you shut up!

  • @phillabels Brilliantly said.

  • The way the music builds and rolls at the start is almost chilling, I can feel the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. When Alan Hull starts singing the first few lines, it's like being going over the edge of a precipice. Just amazing.

  • Live in a little country town in NSW and was walking through the bush today and came across a farm call Lindifarne. Raced back and got on Youtube as like mpjg54 I saw them in Sydney with two other bands. I thought it was with the Doobie Brothers at Sydney Showground, but stand corrected if it was Slade as i saw them too. Couldnt remember what Lindifarne sang, but as soon as this came on the words came rushing back to me. And yeah I can't rememeber who the third band were????? Thanks for this.

  • Beautiful Song!...saw this band at Randwick RaceCourse '73..with Slade and others I can't recall...Dragon?..maybe..unreal concert..such contrasts..perfect..like the '70s..a melting pot of sounds..groups/bands/singers..superb...Thanks..

  • love this song

  • Most beautiful and haunting song, I remember hearing this in the summer of 72. It did not get a lot of radio play which was sad and unbelievable ! I have been searching for this song for years, I was a teenager myself when this song came out that year. Still love it, thank you very much for posting !

  • one of the most amazing songs ever.

    I am 17, and I love, love,love my namesake :)

  • My ultimate summer tune! Makes me think of camping on lazy summer days! Roll on spring and summer!!

  • if you heard this in the 70s it lives with you forever. VERY haunting

  • @mensamoo I totally agree with you; I did and it does;) Reminds me of being a kid and hearing this when my brother used to play it on his record player in his bedroom. Happy memories.

  • am buzzing i forgot about lindisfarne ,blast from the past thankyou x

  • Butterflies are good.

  • Since this song is based off the Fall of the House of Usher which is by Edgar Allen Poe it can be guessed that Lady Eleanor is also taken from Poe's poem called The Raven in which Poe says "For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels named Lenore." The Raven is basically about Lenore coming back to haunt the speaker in this poem and Lenore can also be short for Eleanor so Eleanor is the dead lover coming back again as a vampire to haunt the singer.

  • Sad old git here. Once wore velvet jeans and 'tied dies'. I recorded recorded from the radio back in 1970/1971 on a reel to reel and the version I have was accompanied with strings. Extremely haunting. That reel is no longer playable - I wonder why ??. If anyone can tell me where I can find that track (or maybe the album it came from) you would make an old(ish) man very happy ! Thanks.

  • who was "lady eleanor"?

  • @whichroom She was a lady named eleanor.

  • @whichroom My recent comment should answer your question.

  • Heard this on a south coast based station 'The Coast 106' in the UK and i love it.

  • another great great band of those fantastic 70s lindusfarne epitified the 70s happy and fun days always remember these songs from my school dayswot they listen to these days is nonsense

  • I was 14 and a teenager when this was released and written and sung by the late Alan Hull who passed away in 1995. 1972 no.3. I'm 52 now and miss those times back there, they were wonderful, much better than now.

  • @MrDayday58

Hey, we,re listening to the same stuff.

    Respect.

  • @MrDayday58 just saw ur comment on lindisfarne...i was brought up with them as im from the north east i often visit lindisfarne island also...by the way i drank in newcastle with allan hull and the band and also jimmy nail.and sting..well thats my claim to fame m8

  • @Dollynhos ur right this is good band look up another band called focus

  • @Dollynhos If only that were the case, unfortunately he an annoying little pre pubescent twatt with worldwide media 24 hour saturation exposure - sigh!

  • @Dollynhos

  • @Dollynhos Good kid! Keep looking around youtube and you will find pure gold. Try Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Doors, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin, Focus, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac...the list just goes on ...enjoy!

  • good muisic never gets old

  • still have this album, got it when I was about 14 or 15, love this song.....

  • Best thing they did! Great!

  • im named after this song

  • My goodness, has it been so long since this was recorded. So many memories flood back of a youth spent listening to Lindisfarne, John Miles and other great N. E. musicians and bands. Nothing today comes close to evoking such emotion and longing for things past

  • Beautiful song!! Single version is a little bit different. Maybe more beauty?!

  • Blisstacy !!!

PLEASE , PLEASE , PLEASE could someone youtube the album versions of 'Meet Me On The Corner' & 'Clear White Light' ? Would make me soooo happy !!

  • @turboslag Are you sure they haven't been posted yet?

If so I will post them for You!

  • @comradevinyl

    Thankyou so much :)

The album versions just don't seem to be on youtube, just live performances.

Not knocking live I just prefer the album versions.

Hearing Lindisfarne takes me back to a very happy time in my youth, but particular tracks, like Clear White Light and Meet Me On the Corner hold a sort of

    magic for me. :)

  • @turboslag Both songs online. If you want more, e.g. "winter song" or "fog on the tyne", "we can swing together" or "scarecrow song", don't hesitate to ask, it's all there in my archive...

  • beautiful video , goes so well with this lovely song

  • beautiful video , goes so well with this lovely song

  • I love this band, Lindesfarne are a great group, I like The Beatles too, Let it be is probably the best rock ballad ever written...

  • a long time ago in land far away.. xx xx xx

  • Beautiful harmonies, great flash back to my youth :)

  • However strange (and at times silly) the lyrics may be, the music takes you into a magical place - eerie song, beautifully played. Once heard, always remembered.

  • cornholio, cry away....it is sweet:)

  • Bashee playing magician sitting lotus on the floor

Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw

  • Haunting, evocative, enigmatic BEAUTIFUL song.

  • I thought it was "power drill and saw" myself but ah well

  • i dont think its bashee playing cos aint ever heard of the word and also it certainly isnt power driven saw,its power driven soul you numpty lol.

  • Always loved this song, thanks for uploading it and with a really beautiful video too

  • this song used to make me cry with emotion as a 13 year old, 48 now and it still soothes the soul

  • Bashee playing magician sitting lotus on the floor

Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw

Had my share of nightmares, didn't think there could be much more

then in walked Rodrick Usher with the Lady Eleanor

  • does anyone know the lyrics in the first verse??a what magician????doin my head in for years.

  • glossy paint?

  • Taken from the Lindisfarne biography, where Alan's handwritten lyrics for the song have been scanned:

    "Bashee playing magician

    Sitting lotus on the floor

Belly dancing beauty with a power driven saw

Had my share of nightmares, didn't think there could be much more

Then in came Roderick Usher with the Lady Eleanor"

Obviously slight words changed for the recording, but hope this helps!

  • Really nice tune

  • i have a slightly different version of this track .......

  • One of the most evocative songs ever written. I can listen to it all day long......

  • class tune, ty :-)

  • Very nice!! you need to do a video of "out in the country" by Three dog night..

  • Gives me chills, love it though.

  • my uncle was the lead singer for this band aww bless my hippy uncle xxxx

  • Which side of the family are you? Alan's or Pat's?

  • cartoonshoe - Which singer was that?

  • reminding me of home

  • love this song.one of my favs

  • love this song so much...

  • very good song

  • Thanks to YT I found this song., for awhile i thought i was the only one who remembered it. It was 1973 i was stoned out of my head, and this was one song i do remember. Kinda haunts ya..

  • Lady Eleanor is a beautifull vampire aristocrat and she's gonna hypnotise you and then tear your throat out, how's that?,that's what I reckon anyway,it's your crossword puzzle.

  • 3:26 what is that bird?!

  • This song feels classic early 70s, can anyone tell me what is actually about? it sounds as if Lady Eleanor is either a witch or devil worshipper, maybe I have taken the words too litererally.

  • @lndac02 not rearly i think it's all aboout prince johns and king richards mother Eleanor. that's the only Eleanor i know of in history.

  • @FinalFreek ...demons,lust and base desire in the lyric is what made me wonder if it had a darker meaning is the reason I thought it might be related to devil worshipping/witchcraft. it also mentions Roderick usher at the beginniing of the song who was a character from Edgar alan poes "fall of the house of usher" this was a supernatural tale, but I didnt see any mention of a Eleanor only a madeline...hopefull some smart youtuber will explain all.

  • It is allegedly about Edgar Allan Poe's short story ' Fall of the house of Usher', however Roderick Usher's sister is named Madeline not Eleanor .

  • Listen carefully to the song and you will get your answer xc

  • fab what else can i say!

  • LOL this reminds me that i was a small girl ..listening to my hippy brother playing this on his small record player.

  • @loonylinda Wow, I have posted practically the same comment about this song!! Small world isnt it!!

  • Love all the sixties bands that were influenced by american music , but no one can call this anything other than the best of English folk.

  • WOW !! Hearing that after so many years overwhelmed me with emotion and I burst into tears !!! I was living in the North East at the time and the memories of my time there have just come flooding back. How you doing Geoff , Dave , Clive , Fiona , and Jane ??!!

Thanks so much for youtubing this.

  • What beautiful haunting intro-

    RIP Alan

  • Beautiful harmonies. Thanks a lot for putting this up

  • Have to say Lindisfarne captured some of the vibes of the time for me.Got into my bones.

  • Oh what memories this brings back. I have the album. I guess I was slightly ahead of my mind.

  • Ahh memories are indeed made of songs like this.... thanks for posting. Sad to hear of Alan Hull's demise.

  • fantastic song has a slightly creepy hotel california feel to it it gets into your head and stays there for days great

  • RIP PENNY

  • RIP Alan - Howay indeed

  • truely this is one of a kind

  • Love the name Eleanor, never met one though :(

  • I saw them at the Crystal Palace in London in 1972. They were third-billed along with John McLaughlin & Mahavishnu Orchestra and top-billed Yes performing "Close to the Edge". I was in heaven!!!

  • What a day! The sun shone..Pete Drummond was the announcer..remember him? Well, I think it was that day, because I went to about three concerts at the Bowl, or whatever it was called. The Oz trial was going on..."Murder is illegal, writing about murder is not...sex is legal ,wrting about sex is not!!!" That's what Mr Drummond read out..

  • I saw them in Bristol around the time of all their hits. They were phenomonominal

  • i was named after this song!

    i still love it

  • whats ur name..lindys farm?

  • This track is probably one of the most memorable tracks of the time...

    ..to me anyway!
