A real place with real people. 1914, an unofficial truce was started when a German officer met a British officer between the trenches in No Man's Land. The French after WWI renamed the small wooded area in honor of the Marines who stood there against a massive German offensive later in the war. If only we could go back to the days when just 2 people wanting a small break from the horrors could start a truce. Even if it is just for one day.
@AynRandFanJG I live in the real world, unlike Ron Paul who wants to go back to isolationism, an idiotic concept in 2012. Not to mention his anti-Semitism. I'd even vote for the obamanation before Ron Paul... well, maybe not - I'd never be able to live with myself if I voted for either one of those two morons. As for "loving" war - I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees.
@KittyAllChainedUp Are you an idiot or a shameless partisan? Not bombing other nations is not isolationism. Do you think Switzerland is isolationist? Ron Paul is not an anti-Semite either. Do you know what a Semite is? I have no doubt you'd vote for Obama - you sound like an ignorant oaf. I rather die on my feet than live on my knees. What you don't realize is that you are already living on your knees, slave.
@AynRandFanJG Ooh, another conspiracy moron, LOLOLOL!!! I suppose the illumanati is controlling your dumb ass??? Go take your meds and remember that only sane people are supposed to vote, which obviously eliminates YOU. And yes, I do know what a Semite is. Unlike you, I am educated and not a conspiracy theorist idiot who doesn't know the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning. Go have a BBQ with the bilderbergers, LMFAO!!! And learn some grammar while you're there.
@KittyAllChainedUp Wow, you're an idiot. First off, nothing I said has anything to do with conspiracy theory. Do you think Switzerland is a figment of conspiracy theorists' imaginations? Who said anything about the Illuminati? Do you need to kill people to not be a believer in the Illuminati? If you know what Semites were then you wouldn't call Paul an anti-Semite, you stupid oaf. You calling anyone out for reasoning is a laugh. You don't even employ logic. Grammar? Moron.
@AynRandFanJG Calling someone a "slave" and saying they are unaware of it is standard conspiracy theorist fare. So, I will continue to believe that your moronic self is of that persuasion. Why don't you try learning the difference between deductive and inductive logic and then explaining why "I'm already living on my knees but don't know it". LMFAO. I'm well aware Jews are not the only Semites,so to rephrase about Paul - he's an Israel-basher who will never be POTUS. Thank G-d!
@KittyAllChainedUp Jesus, you are a f'ing moron. Calling you a slave has nothing to do with conspiracy theory you dumb ass. Further, I am glad that you learned two new words but your strained efforts to use them mean nothing. And it's about time that you acknowledged that Ron Paul is not an anti-Semite - but you are too stupid to realize that you just did so. Ron Paul doesn't bash Israel either, you moron. He just doesn't want to control them. You're an idiot. Go vote for Obomney, loser.
@AynRandFanJG Ron Paul wants to return to an isolationist mentality that has no place in the twenty-first century. Beginning, middle and end of story about Ron Paul. Anyone who believes the US can return to isolationism is daft . Those days ended when the Atlantic & Pacific stopped being barriers. AndI'm voting for Gingrich, asshole. So don't presume. (Remember a Ron Paul type named Pat Buchanan who spouted the same rhetoric? My, what a Jew-hater he turned out to be.)
@AynRandFanJG The truth hurts - and your questioning of my intelligence doesn't change that truth. You're also going to be very disappointed in the election results, LOL.
i just heard this song for the first time literally 20 minutes ago at about 5:30 in the morning, and im so glad i figured out the name of this song, because this is going into my list of favorite christmas songs alongside my name is christmas carol and bring him home santa....
This is a song introduced to me by my social studies teacher, and I think that It is an amazing song. I love the spirit of the song, that leads all to have hope for flying. I think that it was a great idea for her to show us this song. We all loved it. It is an amazing song. PEACE!
This song is SO beautiful! I had read of this true story from WWI, the Christmas truce of 1914 several years before this song was recorded, and cried like a baby. I love this song, (and yes, as someone has already pointed out, the actual event did NOT occur at Belleau Wood - that was a later battle, at a different time of year. Guess Belleau Wood just sounds nicer. But the story is true)
No one ever even says the singer of the song is American. I'm fairly certain it's supposed to be a BRITISH soldier. They took some liberties with the fact, but art does that. And this song is beautiful and the message is still a good one no matter what
@mkmwrite Belleau Woods is the sight of a famous battle where U.S. Marines totally overwhelmed the Germans and were nicknamed Teufelhunden or Devil Dogs by the German troops.
You know that's a myth, right? Teufel Hunde means "vicious dogs". "Hunden" is not the plural form of the word "hund" in German. To say Devil Dogs, you would say "hunde des teufels"
Furthermore, the Battle Of Belleau Wood was a fucking bloodbath. More Marines died in that battle than in the last 10 years in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. They did eventually overtake the German position, much to the Germans dismay
@WunderDoob you know this song is not at all about americans, right? the truce was between english and german troops in 1914 before america bothered to join the rest of the world in the war. don't try to sound so fucking smarmy smart. you're just another goof with access to wikipedia.
I was talking to the Lance Corporal and not about the topic of the song. I'm just another goof who actually paid attention in history class, this was covered in 10th grade, you fucking idiot. In fact I have an American History text book in my fucking room and it says it right here in the book. Do you know what a book is? I guess you would need to know how to fucking READ and COMPREHEND before a book would be of any use to you.

@jamesy7603 TOTALLY AGREE im sick of tryin to find some of garth songs and can ONLY find covers...good luck finding "the old stuff" off of his double live album.
yeah i'm sure Garth was laying in bed thinkin "hey i'm gonna sing a song that is ignorant and insults the marines" you people are the ignorant ones for even thinking this. Garth is a inspiration to many and if you don't agree you can go to hell.
I find this song ignorant and insulting to Marines who bled at Belleau Wood and didnt know Jack about the Christmas Truce or care for that matter , and the soldiers in December of 1914 who actually did participate in the truce. Garth is a twat and he should get his facts straight before he tries to capitalize on the feats of men that stand a lot taller than him. If you want to hear a more accurate and and much better song about the events in mention, check out "Christmas in the Trenches".
@mthatcher61 i find this song inspiring facts may be wrong but song is good me and tha lads in helmand been listenin to this song and we think it's gud shit and morale is lifted,so insult tha gud artist all u want but we fuckin like his song here! i think this song is all abt soldiers dream
Wow.. and you wonder why America is screwed up....listen to yourselves..it does not matter who it was , when it was, or who it was between. It was human beings, created by GOD and blessed to have one moment of peace in a time of turmoil.. God bless each soldier on both sides, and GOD bless someone for telling the story in history....
ok guys it is supposed to be an inspiring song. This song made me cry too....maybe this is how we should all act on a daily basis. I don't think it was meant to offend any soldiers. Just a song of good will and peace to all.
This song makes no sense to me. I'm a Marine veteran, and I've actually had the honor to go to Belleau Wood twice for memorial ceremonies. This song talks about a Christmas truce at Belleau wood. The battle was fought in June of 1918. The famed "Christmas truce" happened in 1914 before the US was involved in WW1.
@shcusmc so don't listen to it then... let the rest of us enjoy it. oh, sorry, were you expecting me to say, wow! you're a marine, you're awesome! fuck that, i hate people who nitpick bullshit stuff just to make themselves feel important.
@shcusmc The Christmas Truce which this song is about did in fact happen. The song never claims to be talking about U.S. troops against Germans. The song is about the battle that took place on december 24-25 between mostly British and German lines. The memorial there Honoring the U.S. Marines who died there is for the battle that took place in June of 1918 as you said. These are two separate incidences, and this song commemorates the first one, before the U.S. entered the war. Make sense now?
@shcusmc This song is really about the battles at flanders in 1914. It refers to Bellaeu Wood but we know that it wasnt bellaeu wood. I am assuming Garth did this because it is a pretty name, compared to flanders. And the extent of the truce was much more than this song lets on. They buried there dead in joint ceremonies. They played soccer together. they embraced eachother
@JuiceEmoGirl In early Nov 1983 I reported to building 12, Main Side Camp Lejeune. It was a couple week after the Marines had been blown up in Lebanon. I asked how I could join a unit headed for Beirut. "What's your name?" the Sergent demanded. "Corporal Lawrence", I said. He looked down at his list and then back up at me. "You're already going," he replied.
By June 26th, the Marines confirmed that they had taken the entire woods. To clear the woods in their entirety, the Marines had frequently resorted to hand-to-hand fighting with bayonets and knives. Such was the ferocity of this that the Germans gave the Marines the nickname “Teufel Hunden”, which roughly translates as “Devil Dogs
Once a machine gun fired, it gave away the position of the machine gun team. General Pershing was to state that “the deadliest weapon in the world is a Marine and his rifle.” Even a post-battle German report stated that the Marines marksmanship was “remarkable”.
US Marine casualties were the highest in the Corp’s history up to that date. However, once units got into the woods, the trees that hindered a swift advance also became a source of protection. Marine snipers could pick-off German machine gun posts with some ease.
The task of clearing Belleau Wood was given to the 2nd and 3rd Divisions of the US Army. Half of the 2nd Division was made up of units of the US Marines (the 4th Marine Brigade, which comprised of the 5th and 6th Marine Regiments).
The battle fought in Belleau Wood (June 1918) was the first real taste of battle for the US Marines in World War One with General Pershing calling Belleau Wood the most important battle fought by US forces since the US Civil War. The Battle of Belleau Wood was part of the Allied drive east away from an axis from Amiens to Paris in what was a response to the German Spring Offensive in 1918.
Where in the song does it mention the US Marine Corps? The singer is singing from the perspective of a Soldier on the opposite side of the battlefield from the German lines - no date is given.
To the Marines - feel pride in your sevice but don't leave out historic fact. The Marines contributed a single Brigade to what was a massive offensive which included TWO US Army DIVISIONS. It was the combined efforts of the fighting forces that led to the victory. Belleau Wood was one piece
@mi35d1965 You are right, I think people get confused. The U.S. Marine Corps did participate in the battle of Belleau Wood, and it is one of the major contributing factory to the reputation the Marine Corps has for marksmanship because they were effictively engaing targets 700m away. This was uncommon for the times. However, as proud as i am being a Marine, I would not claim we were part of this story. This took place on the Western front between British and German troops.
