  • Love it, thanks

  • Neil Diamond used to write good songs...he no longer does so.

  • @ndhan72 You don't listen to Neil anymore I think. You no longer do so.

  • Is that the Alvin Ailey Dance group from NY, NY?

  • I have been looking for a remake of the album african triology for years. I had that album back in 1973, dumb me all those wonderful albums of neil, gone.

  • I love this song, love Neil Diamond, does anybody knows what Soolaimon means ??

  • @TINE1967 When I googled it, this is what I got: "Originally written for an extended piece(‘The African Trilogy’) , Soolaimon took on a life of its own when it was presented to a live audience. The title is meant to be a variation of the word ‘Salamah’, meaning ‘Hello’ and ‘Welcome’ as well as ‘Good-bye’ and peace be with you’, in many languages." Thanks for asking because I never woudl have searched for it!

  • @jnfan2011 Silly me, I could 've googled it myself, never thought about it.Thank you!

  • A character in my novel "The Proper Order of Things" was named after this song. His family calls him "Simon" for short. Check it out on Amazon. If you like Neil Diamond, I think you'll enjoy it. The main character is Caroline. Her mother was obsessed with guess who.

  • Nice. Thank you tony!

  • The man has more talent in his little finger then most young performers in today's music will ever hope to have. Thanks for the post.

  • LoVe...the man and his music

  • i would also say tom jones too!

  • This is like Elvis in ' where could I go 'video in 68 comeback special, and one has has to admit this style of performance kicks the living shite out of some of the cow dung that one is forced to listen to today !! Neil Diamond abu !!!!!!!!!!

  • This is the first time I am seeing this video. it is very nicely done. The sing is really great and neil Diamond looks young and handsome !

  • @sahajad i agree! I was introduced to Neil Diamond by my mother and grew up with his music; this is one of my favourites - but didn't realise quite how 'hot' he was!

  • @sahajad i agree! I was introduced to Neil Diamond by my mother and grew up with his music; this is one of my favourites - but didn't realise quite how 'hot' he was!

  • marvalouse invention internet.Thank you for being so clever so I can hear him sing and see him too.

  • Great song, does anyone have a newer version video of this? Id like to see him in the hot august night concert. I love the congos beat etc. One of his best I think.

  • 203207ab Neither! First of all, I doubt the Octomom was even born when this song was written and first performed. Soolaimon (please note the different spelling) is a greeting. It can mean hello, peace be with you, welcome or goodbye (this is what I found out at "Song Facts," I hope they are right!) This was an important piece and many musicians were influenced by it. Perhaps in this context Neil is meaning "peace be with you." But to be sure, you'd have to ask him. Soolaimon!

  • Is this song based on Vice President Omar Suleiman who is now President of Egypt or is it the Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman of Octomom fame?? thank you.

  • Great song and sound. Id like to see some white girls dancing though. But very nicely done.

  • this African Trilogy was certainly going out into unchartered waters for Neil at the time of his career (1970).....However, America bought it, and it made the TOP 40. Very good piece of music. ND...the best! ty

  • I always told my sons, "Here is how you find out if a girl is worth hanging with. Play this song for her. If she doesn't like it, get rid of her."

  • السلام عليكم

  • I'm one more who would like to thank you very much for bringing us this video. Neil Diamond sure is a special composer/songwriter and a spectacular performer. Soolaimon is one of his songs that moves me the most. Again, thank you very much for this.

  • Been a fan of Neil's since Solitary Man. One of the rare ones...never heard a song I didn't like.

One feature I really like about him is integral in Soolaimon//Holly Holy-He begins soft and slow and builds to a great crescendo

    Keep on Neil

  • awesome! he was so cute back then!!=)

  • Gives me chills!

    The memories...

  • AAAAGGGGGGG QUE HOMBRE TAN RICO A ESTE SI ME LO COMO

  • Finally in the hall of fame!!!

  • GREAT!

  • Awesome video!!! 5*****

  • very nice version...

  • Great Stuff

  • this is my fav song of his, thanks

  • Love seeing all of the percushionist and the dancers - so beautiful!!!!

  • amazing a great neil diamond tune love it!

  • You know, I have loved his music since I was a teen. Got to see him live in my 50's. This man is awesome.

  • This is one of my facorite songs by Neil Diamond!! Thanks RAULFUNKY for posting this video...........Thanks Neil Diamond for sharing your talents with the world!!

  • I've never actually seen this performed so this is awesome. I played this so much as a child that my grandfather broke the album 4 times and I replaced it each time before he gave up and bought me drums.

  • Intramontabile Neil !

  • For any hall of fame voters--i offer this as exhibit A......Get Real!

  • @pappy154451956 agreed, gosh, he has so many examples......his catalog from 66 to 76 show rock n roll on every record.

To the lip synch group, neil could not afford a full band and at times he piped studio sou8nd into a setting like the above, BUT sang the song leas as he was there---bety some sound was indeed piped in, but not the singer himself

  • Aren't those the Alvin Ailey Dancers with him? great Tribal Dance too

  • Fantastic video! Never it it before but I love it!

  • Rent the Thank you A. concert. At the end. there is an interview that Neil gives that really takes you into the man himself. It really shows you what kind of man he is.

  • Slight similariaty between the sond of the title of this song and the name of the main actress in Punky Brewster.

  • I believe it to be spiritually based. Incredible song. The Best of Neil Diamond.

  • My home was full of Neil Diamond as a child..... this just takes me back to being a kid in the 70's.

  • ***** Gran interpretación... excelente coreografía...

  • great

  • Neil experimented with African rhythms 10 years before Paul Simon released Graceland.

  • @fredoniaq Rock and Roll is almost entirely African Rythms.

  • SCHOPA

    ESTEFANO1408

  • I'll say this...I don't think Neil Diamond has EVER been known for lip syncing. Seems to me his whole career, singing live is his first choice. If he lip syncs for a program, it will have been the programs decision...which would be insane as Diamond is one of the greatest live singers of all time.

  • @Cainefan And I'll say this - NEVER think that lip-syncing is done ONLY becasue the voice and song do not match on YouTube!!!!! If you have normal 15MM or larger tape - or large video tape - the SOUND stays on the tape - but the tape gets smaller to fit the 2 X 3 inch YouTube format - and THAT is the ONLY reason that the lips and voice are out of sync - to fit the smaller YouTube format!!!! If they stayed in sync - EVERYTHING would sound like chipmunks!!!!!

  • great performance

  • Fantastic!

  • Familiar with this song from a mid 70s cover version (live) by the country band The Wright Brothers. It was a medley they did of Soolaimon and Brother Love's Trav. Salvation show, a medley Neil had done of course

  • Okay to add fuel to a fire which seems to be buring. I have loved Diamond's work since I was a teenager. I am now in my mid 50's. Got to see him live just once, in 2007 and he was everything and more than I had hoped. My comment of 'does it matttter' was about people arguing about lip synch or not. As far as I am concerned, it really is not worth arguing over. Diamond delivers live so if some idiot thinks lip synching is involved 'does it matter'? It does not cos it doesn't happen. End of

  • Understand your point entirely Thelcewitch54 and agree, after much consideration!!

  • Thank you, 315drm, for taking the time to consider my point before making a 'knee jerk reaction' and understanding the point I was trying to make. Scottytohotty, for instance said, and I will quote,"HE IS A GOD". I would beg too differ........he is a human being with a massive talent that he uses to the very best of his immense ability to the benefit of us lesser mortals. And I cannot tell you how much his work has meant to me over my lifetime.

  • 315drm I so agree with you HE IS A GOD.... I wish I had as much tallent as this man has in his left big toe...

he is wonderful in concert, my dad took me to a concert in Seattle at the Key Arena in 84 when i was barely 10, niels son played the drums because the normal guy was sick, let me tell ya he was AWESOME..... He is a great GREAT performer.

  • It really does matter because Neil Diamond is one of those RARE performers who sounds JUST AS GOOD live as in a recording studio. He is NOT lip synching as proven by the "hey's" he adds in while singing at 1:10 and 2:36. Those are not on recorded versions!! You can also hear his voice get stronger as he leans into the mic on his shirt (3:13) on the right and when his head is turned more to the left his voice isn't nearly as strong. As I said, it really DOES matter if you are a true Neil fan!

  • Does it really matter?

  • what are you guys fighting about? he's lipsynching duh

  • piss off ...guy's the real deal...great entertainer !!

  • I know what a microphone is; I'm a musician. And you're not, obviously.

So you're saying he's using a wireless mini mike...that was invented 5 years later ? Right.

  • You see that little mic, it has a little wire, therefore, it's not wireless.

That being the reason ND is a successful musician and you're not, obviously.

  • You know what? I just watched your video, and you're good, I liked it.

That said, This is not a wireless mic.

  • Thanks, I appreciate your honest judgement in spite of our differences.

I agree ND is a more prolific and succesful songwriter. Believe it or not, I passed on my big break - national tv on prime time - because.... I refused to lip sinc.

NB: a wireless mike DOES have a wire. It leads to the little sender, the size of a pack of cigarettes, that a singer or guitarist keeps in a pocket.

The first to use a mini mike like this was Kate Bush; around 1980. This clip looks much earlier than that.

  • Maybe we'll never know the true answer to this, I'm sure it's the early stages of 'wireless' and 'hidden' 'handsfree' mics but I may be wrong, (it's happened before)

    All the best.

  • I've been wrong before too. I remember it well; it was in 1988. :)

Let's find out who was right when we get to heaven. Happy Xmas.

  • Sounds like a plan, have a great Xmas and NEw YEar, and all the very best with your music.

I was wrong more recently than that.... I think it was tonight when I said it wouldn't snow in Scotland!

  • Tell you what..........one of the first albums I bought was Hot August Night back in the 70's. Finally got to see him live in 2008 and he was everything and more than I had hoped for. I would say, Neil, taking that one more bite paid off. As long as you can, do.

  • I danced as a Cadette Girl Scout to this song in a Mall in Salt Lake City, UT in 1970. We tie dyed our outfits and it is a wonderful memory! Love Neil Diamond and this song!!!

  • I've seen the man twice in concert. He puts on one heck of a show. I've loved his music since the first time I heard Shilo.

  • Even if he is - who cares? He's been around since the 60s. Everyone knows he's no Milli Vanilli.

  • I wish i was there

  • Great song!! Great performer!! What else can be said.

  • otra gran cancion de este fenomeno musical, unico y perfecto en su esilo.

  • OMG! I remember when I was 16 camping at the old Met Center in Bloomington MN to see him! This was so cool to see this "music video" of Neil!!!

  • great song on super album

  • Leslie Robinson was one of the few black professional ice skaters in the 70s (Holiday on Ice / Follies). He skated to this song, and the performance always brought the house down. Leslie, who died several years ago, was a close friend of mine, and I miss him. Naturally this song brings back deep emotional feelings and memories. Neil Diamond is a truly iconic songwriter and singer. He, like Leslie, has made the world a better place. I'm glad we were on the planet at the same time.

  • Suzie and the four flamers are good dancers.

  • Niel is so hot in this video...what a talent.....I love it....

  • es la mamadaaaa

  • neil is the best singer around he has a super voice only freddy mercury and frank sinatra had the same range as him.

  • @skepticepilleptic Yea those guys are great but you really have a narrow image of singers. For instance Steve Perry of journey, Stevie Winwood, steve walsh of kansas and eric clapton to name just a few.

  • neil diamond respectable this pretty dookie tho

  • We saw Neil at the Greek theater...'tree people' for those who know L.A. and that wonderful place...great songs/performances..He is the best

  • I Love Neil Diamond!

  • Same here. My mom (r.I.P.) would play his albums every day around the house growing up and I'll admit he grew on me.

  • wen was this done?

  • ON THE WINGS OF A FLEA!!

  • Comment removed

  • B-E-AUTIFUL VOICESand song!!

  • it just blew me away way back then and it still does.play at high volume!!!

  • What a great song and performance by Neil and the great dancers. This is art at its best. peace.

  • yea neil looked good in this vid ...

  • Its a fantastic song, I can remember when I was a teenage,

    thanks Neil Daimond

  • The dancing is just fantastic. It had to take a lot of work to get it like that.

  • going out to my brother Paul who used to listen to this song all the time, animmut turaartitara paul puulik

  • Haven't heard this in decades, thanks!

  • Silly person, I am a woman...natural, and I think Neil Diamond really rocks.

  • Haha my university's jazz choir is performing this soon.

We're going to knock the socks off of this song.

  • I don't why, but I lve this song!:)

  • un regalo para mis oídos, sin duda

  • neils best.years ahead of its time. love that choppy beat.

  • Amazing.

  • Wow! 5 stars.

  • What an incredible performance! I have never "seen" Neil sing this song, only heard it via the Tap Root Manuscript and Hot August Night albums. This lavish production is going on my faves list, and thank you Raulfunky for adding it to YouTube. Incredible!

  • you're welcome, infact i'm glad to share this vid with all of you

  • ongelooflijk mooi!!! zou wel meer willen hebben van dit optreden!

  • obsessive i hope so anyone whos a Neil Diamond has to be, ive been OBSESSIVE for yrs.

  • Neil is great

  • absolutely right

  • me and froggyg22 are going to get back at you!!

  • omg dnrothx stop crap-a-sizeing every on else!!!!! :(

  • why dont you like this? it is awesome!!!

  • Well lets leave a comment about his vid. Neil u look good u sing great, love this song. Keep going Sir Neil.xxxxxxx

  • is Soolaimon the name of a woman or something?

  • Hear the lyrics of the chorus? "god of my want want want, lord of my day day day..." There's your answer :)

  • this man is a ledgend in the entertainment biz his songs are gret I love you neil your the best of the best!!!!

  • OMG I remember seeing this when I was a small child. My parents used to party and when my Mom had a little too much to drink she'd try and dance to this. What a memory rush. I grew up with Neil love this and thank you for posting

  • Dn, you're so in the dark, you have no idea what day light is like. I do not normally say this, but, you are an idiot!! Neil was not exploitng African culture. He was showing us the beauty of it. I am not African, I am Ukranian. But, I love the African music. It makes me feel at peace. It is part of the Earth. =Stefan=

  • Seems interesting that the white man is positioned above the "natives..."

  • Dn, you still don't get it. And you know the sorry part?? You never will.=Stefan=

  • Never say never.

You've done little but hurl silly insults my way.

  • Dn, insults, or reallity? Think about that. What you percieve as an insult, I believe it is real. It's all a matter of perspective. (And mine has prioritey over your's) =Stefan=

  • ...and you have far too much time on your hands.

  • Well,Dn, why not? After all, I am retired. LOL. Hey, this is fun! Talk to you later. Let's get into some real interesting debates. Most of the people living here are younger than me. They don't have the interests I do. I love a good debate! Take care and have a great day. Believe it or not, you just made mine. Thank you. =Stefan=

  • your being really annoying, and paranoid. stop.

  • You're responding to a comment that was posted at least two weeks ago. I don't think I'm the one that's paranoid.

  • yea. that makes alot of sense. besides, who looks at the date of when thengs are posted?

  • People who aren't paranoid.

  • are you retarded? you make absolutely no sense

  • You're obsessive.

  • stop with the stupid calm answers that dont make sense. besides, id rather be obsessive than a 32 year old man who has nothing better to do than be online all day. im a teenager, im supposed to have a youtube account. your not

  • What's a teenager doing listening to Neil Diamond?

  • mainstream music is shit. neil isnt my favorite, i like 80s rock, but i do like alot of his songs

  • when i was a teenager i liked him! i liked him since i was 9!

  • listen m8, i have m8s who r 16, 17, 18 and like jonny cash who is 10 yrs older than neil diamond, neil diamond is 4 all ages and i'm 17 yrs old and i no that his music is better than any1's. The era and age of fan doesnt matter. Its the quality of the music.

  • you go girl!

  • i'm actually a male

  • oh sorry you go guy!

  • omg i can like whatever i like!

  • God he was gorgeous! And that sexy deep voice. He has everything!!

  • Which year was this performed?

  • Oh Stefan I see. This is a Neil Diamond thread after all. Neil's drummer before Ronnie Tutt was Dennis St. John. Of course, you are right: my knowledge about Neil Diamond's career and music is off. Personally, I agree that you know everything. I agree and bow to your greater knowledge!

  • Well, Shilo, Since Mr. Diamond was my favorite singer, back in the 60's, Who has the greatest knowledge? I'll bet you were not even alive! However, I lived it. So, do you still doubt my knowledge?? Come on "Boy". I was there, you were not. I'm waiting. You pissed me oFF!!Get readdy for a war!!I will take you out!!Yes, this is a challenge. Are you sure about Dennis St. jOHN??Better check your albums, before you answer.Comm's ended. +Stefan=

  • Shilo, I pulled one of my albums out from storage. "Hot August Night". The percussionist was a man called Dennis St. James. I think you should bow down to my greater knowledge.I don't know everything. But, what I am interested in, I do know! Wan't to talk about quantum mechanics?? We can discuss about how light can be a wave, and and a packet, at the same time. Any thoughts?? Waiting to hear from you. Or, how about the duality of molecules? Your choice. =Stefan=

  • Well, how cool is this??? And just how handsome can one man be anyway??? If only youtube was around when I was madly in love with Neil... heck, I still am!!! Too cool!

  • Thanks for posting this. Neil Diamond never ceases to amaze.

  • For example, when I referred to Paul Simon's Graceland circa 1985 I was referring to the fact that Simon achieved accolade after accolade (for an admittedly very good album. However, what I was trying to explain was that Neil Diamond had been experimenting 15 years earlier with African rhythyms but no-one even noticed. By the mid 1980s Diamond was being panned by critics (rightly) for utter schlock such as the dire Headed For The Future album and the awful HAN2 album.
