Believe it or not, at mark 0:46 and 0:47 that was considered to be long hair back then. If you were a man and you allowed your hair to touch your eyebrow or just a little over your ear, it was "long hair" around 1963. You could even get beaten up for that. The Beatles, Animals, and Rolling Stones started a trend with their looks and rhythm and blues but then began to veer into the sound of their own creation.
(John Lennon had a hard life and it's heard in the lyrics he wrote for us).
@Atomicflash500 Actually, it is the other way around in a sense, ELO coming first; both bands owe their sound in large measure to the Beatles. Always liked ELO but Jeff Lynne got a little to stuck on the second side of Abbey Road. Queen was always a little more operatic. Both groups lacked the variation and 'soul' of the Beatles.
John Lennon and Jeff Lynne... I wonder, did they ever get to meet up? I know George Harrison (of course) and Paul and Ringo still do - some recordings too... but not sure if John did. I did hear John mention how ELO were like "son of the walrus" or some comment like that - he said it during sitting in as a guest DJ once on some radio show, and then they played "Showdown" - which John said reminded him of Marvin Gaye.
Jeff Lynne was heavily influenced by the Beatles...It is quite evident in his music, but with a uniquely pleasurable experience untouched in any form of music. You don't actually think that groups like Metallica would have ever thought to do their music to a philharmonic orchestra without the success of ELO to reference, do you? LOLOL Perhaps they might have, but it's a nice thought! LOL
THIS REALLY MOVED ME. GREAT JOB! I AM A FAN OF BOTH JOHN AND JEFF. I HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL FORWARD THIS VIDEO TO THEIR FRIENDS WHEN THE ANNIVERSARY OF JOHN'S DEATH COMES AROUND THIS DECEMBER.I THINK IT WILL BE SENTIMENTAL, YET COMFORTING TO MOST.
To Mason5666 : Never mind the bullocks ( LedZep and Tonyo) ... I think it's bitchen that U luv ELO & you're only 13. My son is like that. He likes a whole bunch of new stuff (Cursive, brighteyes, coldplay) but also, luvs Dylan, Beatles, Beach Boys) Dude, great music is great music .
The young people listening to this music, introducing them to John Lennon, leader of the greatest band, The Beatles, is knowing, the music will never die. Thank you for this video.
I remembered John Lennon loved ELOs song Showdown. I am so glad Jeff Lynne got to do so much work with the members of the Beatles. I love both of those bands. Long live the ELO
John spoke out against the powers that be. Alot of people thought he was crazy, but look John was right, these people running the country are crazy. They had no right to tap John's phone or spy on him. Think Patriot Act today. Check out "Fall of the Republic" on YouTube.
The real tribute to John is a set of songs they did around the eighties in some of their concert's. They'd play a medley of Lennon Beatle songs. Quite a treat. The audio is out there.
I have heard Jeff Lynn has made the comment, he wish he had been a Beatles (so some refer to him as the 5th Beatle - not literally since there have been 3 drummers in the Journeymen/Beatle group(s) birthing so to speak).
I do enjoy seeing/hearing much talented well known musicians together in concerts who have high respect for each other.
Back in the late 70's, while many were wiggling to disco, this band held the rock genre together. They were our saving grace for sure. Jimmy, wherever you are, " ELO Rocks ! "
Lynne is a huge Beatles fan, and wanted to be a musician because of them. Lennon died only a few months before this came out, so this could easily be a 'hidden' tribute.
Cant actually see the connection tween JL and this song, as excellent as it is. Video too. I saw ELO on the Time Tour back in the 80s. Excellent! BTW: Had me photo taken yesterday at Tittenhurst Park in Ascot England where John lived before he went off to America in 71.
I got into ELO from my dad when i was about 7 and I'm still listening now.. i'm 35!.. it's still amazing.. good for you for having good taste in music at such a young age..
@Mason5666 fuck off, why do people like you always have to post stupid comments saying ''hey I like music and here is my age! yay!'' it's fucking annoying, nobody cares how old you are, just fuck off.
@Mason5666 So what you are saying is, that because you are 13, you are not supposed to love Jeff Lynn's music, yet you are, so we are supposed to be amazed and praise you for your incredible choice of music taste?
When it cuts to 2:22 ... hearing it now still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. The Key change, the multiple vocal harmonies .... (shiver).
LOL I analyse because to understand the how and why is to appreciate it all the more. Like I said earlier, anyone with even a passing interest in music production or sound engineering could learn so much from listening to Jeff Lynn's production skills. Guess that's not you though.
"Dropkick" - Aussie per chance? Didn't think they had BigPond in Footscray...
I think by your "Just listen to the bloody song" comment that you are not involved in music in a professional capacity. If you played an instrument, you would surely also analize (sic) the music you love.
If you don't work in a studio or with live bands then fine. Get your kicks off whatever the DJ on TripleM tells you to listen to.
But don't knock me because you don't understand what it is I do or why I do it.
One of my favourite songs from my favourite ELO album, "Time"..
Anyone with even a passing interest in music production or sound engineering could learn so much from listening to Jeff Lynn's production skills. A genius IMO.
Very touching and superb pictorial montage. It's so hard to believe that John Lennon has been gone for so long now. I often wonder what he would have been doing now.
What's so unbelievably great about Lynne is his lyrics are so easy to make your own, about your own life, and deeply personal. And then he adds them to killer tunes and musicianship. Then sometimes he throws in a 30piece orchestra!
TO suggest that John Lennon was makintg a "comeback" is to suggest that he'd fallen from the top. Using the word "comeback" in reference to John Lennon is an insult. He was always at the top even during his temporary hiatus. The world of music and the world in general was a better place when John was with us. I miss him...deeply.
Lennon himself once said ELO were how the Beatles would have sounded if they'd stayed together. Jeff Lynne eventually became the Fifth Beatle, and rightly so. A lovely tribute, thank you xx
As the years go by, I believe that the Beatles become even larger than they were in the 60's. I also believe that Lennon was not THE Beatle. Mc Cartney is still making money, but my attention has shifted to George. It's funny how your opinions change with time.
Bottom line...........I grew up in the greatest era of music...ever!
this song is titled "21st century man", great song from their best album "TIME" published in the 80's, in the XX century, the century when music were made by talented musicians.
Lynne believed that Lennon was on the verge of a comeback in 1980, and all that agreed, would assume that it would have changed the face of modern music (again after the Beatles). SHAME SHAME SHAME
Lennon was most definately coming back - Double Fantasy was half brilliant (the other half of course was totally fucking shitted by that useless twat, Ono). Shame indeed - Starting Over, great!
He was shot four times, spun to the ground died. Three years before I was born. It's just like society to kill such genius performers. Lennon was 30 years ahead of anyone or anything. I'd like to see movies or read fan fictions about how he'd be if he had lived during the 80's 90's and 2000's.
nicely done..john lennon is missed..i remember that night all to well i was 18 and had just gone to bed when howard cosell broke the horrible news to all of us watching m.n.football..what a shame..i hope chapman rots in hell..as the late george called him...the devils best friend ..how fitting
I think the "Time" album is one of the most neglected and underrated of the last thirty years. Lynne totally gets across the terrible loneliness that we all feel from time to time. Briliant from the first second to the last. Anyone agree ?
I heard a few cuts from time when I was 16 many years ago and decided I would sell a kidney if need be to get it. In reality I just borrowed of my mother. But as an adult I bought a bootleg a few years back with ELO playing 'Nowhere man' and 'A day in the life' on tour in Germany. Great stuff too! He really sounds like John!
I submitted a video response for my petition to keep John's killer imprisoned for his full life term...just waiting for the maker of this video to approve it. Please check it out and click the link to sign it.
The last time I was listen this song, I got 8 years, and now with this tecnology, I also cry, like "thelovelylinda", I remember my childs years, greate song!!saludos desde Mèxico!!
I loved it, John and the boys were a huge influence on Jeff Lynn's life, how cool that he actually got to work with his heroes on the two "new" songs in anthology. I liked the montage of pictures, the last bit made me sad and I cried when I saw him signing Mark Chapman's album, what a total and complete loss. Brilliant.
reminds me of happy times and sad, seen elo at ingleston 19;81 fantastic, also same year john died, elo done a tribute that night to john, a day in your life? just about right way to describe things that happen in your life, good luck all"
So beautiful and moving! E.L.O. was my favorite group when I was in my 20s. We grow old but Jeff Lynn's music lives forever. Thank you for bringing back the memories of John Lennon.
This song was on the TIME album. During ELO's 1981 "Time" tour, they devoted a whole segment of the concert to a John Lennon tribute, with Jeff Lynne singing some of John's songs. So this video really works for me!

"One day you're a hero, next you're a clown..."
Love, love, love this line. A great sentiment on how he was regarded as a hero for his music but ridiculed for his peace demonstrations.

Yes, I guess Lennon was a 21st Century man, fab video friend!!

He was shot four times, spun to the ground died. Three years before I was born. It's just like society to kill such genius performers. Lennon was 30 years ahead of anyone or anything. I'd like to see movies or read fan fictions about how he'd be if he had lived during the 80's 90's and 2000's.

if john lennon could say one word to his killer he would say "peace"

nicely done..john lennon is missed..i remember that night all to well i was 18 and had just gone to bed when howard cosell broke the horrible news to all of us watching m.n.football..what a shame..i hope chapman rots in hell..as the late george called him...the devils best friend ..how fitting

John's killer is up for parole in October.
