, you know its funny that when elvis was alive he asked to sing with the blackwoods and the stamps.. but they tolled him he needed to be saved, when elvis became big he gave the stamps a job funny how that works money is the root of all evil . as the bible says you will be surprised how is in heaven and how is not . i really hope elvis asked christ into his heart. he was used by all people.

JD wrote too many songs and sang too much about God and Jesus for you to make me believe he drank.

Yeah, I knew JD. I would think that is evidence enough. As for why folks aren't talking about my father, maybe it was because my father developed cancer and was unable to perform as many years as JD did and eventually go on to sing with Elvis. Elvis made JD popular.  You know that, surely you know that. Hey, I can only hope that JD stopped drinking long enough before he passed to see and think clearly. He was a very nice man, even if he had a problem.

My daddy sang bass with the Stamps LONG before JD Sumner and he was AS good as JD ever thought about being. The only reason JD made anything of himself was because of Elvis. JD was hard pressed to stay sober long enough to get through one concert.

Roy sang in a group in the mid 70's that had a young kid named Ivan Parker that hadn't yet graduated high school. They were called The Glory Road Quartet from Benson North Carolina..............

Ed Enoch was hired as baritone in late 1969 early 1970 because as JD put it "had and edge on his voice" and Jimmy Blackwood joined his Dad ,James. Ed was not just an average singer. He had what was called a progressive style and had a slight vocal technique and a slight pronounciation as Jake Hess. But more modern for the time.

Well Ed Enoch married Jd's daughter so he can't be all that bad. It is cool to see a young Donnie and Jd without gray hair! Jimmy Blackwood was just a kid! It is cool that in JD's last song The Lord still lives in this old house the Stamps are there with him George Younce and Jd were friends for 42 years. These men are all good and sang for the Lord. Do you think Ed Enoch ever sang a lead like the one you're hearing now by Roy McNeal. He is tenor here but sang lead for the Statesmen.

I know this was an old arguement, but I have to agree with kensintonss. Ed Enoch was a great singer, but I have to say I liked him more when he was younger. If you can find a copy of him singing, "Touch of the masters hand" I believe you might think different of him.

Ed was a powerful lead singer in his hay-day! However, his voice has not sustained the same quality to me, that Glen Payne, Jack Toney, or James Blackwood did as they aged. Also, lets not forget Jake Hess!! Jake's voice held out even with all of the health problems that he endured through out his life! Based on how much Ed boasts of himself on the Stamp's Website, you would think that he is the greatest singer of all time!

Why should JD Sumner be mentioned? Sure, he owned the business at one time, but the Stamps Quartet was around long before JD was on the scene.

Because at that time the group was billed as "JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet" -- that was also name used on their LPs. Another reason it was added was to aid anyone in a search.

@haroldcar Harold I’m not sure how to interpret your comment to me. I am a huge fan of JD Sumner as the greatest bass singer who ever lived. My only comment about JD or anyone else was to ask why someone criticized Ed Hill for not including JD’s name as a current Stamps member.

I have no “personal problem” with JD, I care nothing about his personal life, and I’m sure God forgave anything that he needed forgiven.

Ed obviously owns the Stamps Quartet, and I have no problem with him touring as the Stamps Quartet. However, for him not to even mention J.D.'s name anywhere on the website, to me, is disrespectful. J.D. is the one who hired Ed to sing with the Stamps Qaurtet. Ed has no problem mentioning that he has sung with Elvis and how Elvis thought that he was such a great singer. He has no problem mentioning his own accomplishments as a singer, but cannot have a tribute on the website for J.D.!
