just because these men sang songs about jesus and yes palyed for the king of rock and roll jeus makes it very clear, you can not have too masters, singing gospel songs will not get you into the kingdom of god. its like a beer in one hand and a bible in the other hand
, you know its funny that when elvis was alive he asked to sing with the blackwoods and the stamps.. but they tolled him he needed to be saved, when elvis became big he gave the stamps a job funny how that works money is the root of all evil . as the bible says you will be surprised how is in heaven and how is not . i really hope elvis asked christ into his heart. he was used by all people.
Also, a phone interview with Joe Krein will tell alot. Also Donnie Sumner story is on the web. Actually,, JD was Donnies biological 2nd cousin until the kids were adopted. JD's brother adopted Donnie. Guess they would still be cousins tho"? I will never believe JD had a drinking problem... EVER. I know what "ASK" and Wikipedia states. JD wrote too many songs and sang too much about God and Jesus for you to make me believe he drank.
ALL YA'LL GET THE STORY STRAIGHT OR SHUT-UP!! Donnie Sumner(JD's nephew) had the drinking problem,,, NOT JD!!!! This is why he left Elvis and the group before Elvis passed away.
Come-on people. Do your homework before you show your ignorance. However,, he has since came back to Christ and has been on the Gaither Homecoming programs before JD passed.
ALL YA'LL GET THE STORY STRAIGHT OR SHUT-UP!! Donnie Sumner(JD's nephew) had the drinking problem,,, NOT JD!!!! This is why he left Elvis and the group before Elvis passed away.
My advice to everyone is No matter What JD Sumner was or any Gospel Singer for that matter! We ALL have sinned and come short of the Glory of God! It is because of God's Love for Us through Christ. God Forgives ALL Sinners. And I have heard the Passion and Love JD Sumner had for God in his last days! I believe JD made it to the HOUSE!
Yeah, I knew JD. I would think that is evidence enough. As for why folks aren't talking about my father, maybe it was because my father developed cancer and was unable to perform as many years as JD did and eventually go on to sing with Elvis. Elvis made JD popular. You know that, surely you know that. Hey, I can only hope that JD stopped drinking long enough before he passed to see and think clearly. He was a very nice man, even if he had a problem.
Actually JD was popular when in the Blackwood Brothers. If JD did drink then we all would like to see hard evidence of that. Do you really think God would use someone who drinks? I don't know who you are or if your claim is true. Maybe your real name and a real photo of you would help us out here.
My daddy sang bass with the Stamps LONG before JD Sumner and he was AS good as JD ever thought about being. The only reason JD made anything of himself was because of Elvis. JD was hard pressed to stay sober long enough to get through one concert.
@imreborn2dotcom If he was so Good...then why aren't people talking about him, instead of J.D...and do you have any evidence linking J.D. as an alcoholic....
Roy sang in a group in the mid 70's that had a young kid named Ivan Parker that hadn't yet graduated high school. They were called The Glory Road Quartet from Benson North Carolina..............
Ed Enoch was hired as baritone in late 1969 early 1970 because as JD put it "had and edge on his voice" and Jimmy Blackwood joined his Dad ,James. Ed was not just an average singer. He had what was called a progressive style and had a slight vocal technique and a slight pronounciation as Jake Hess. But more modern for the time.
Well Ed Enoch married Jd's daughter so he can't be all that bad. It is cool to see a young Donnie and Jd without gray hair! Jimmy Blackwood was just a kid! It is cool that in JD's last song The Lord still lives in this old house the Stamps are there with him George Younce and Jd were friends for 42 years. These men are all good and sang for the Lord. THEY didnot care who was better!
Written by Dottie Rambo. Ed Enoch now owns the Stamps Quartet, not Ed Hill. JD was/is the premier SG bass singer of all time. Next in line are London Parris, and "Big Chief" Wetherington. With all due respect, Ed Enoch is an average singer and the Stamps Quartet that all of us remember, is gone forever.
Do you think Ed Enoch ever sang a lead like the one you're hearing now by Roy McNeal. He is tenor here but sang lead for the Statesmen.
You never heard Glen Payne (Cathedrals) sing "We shall see Jesus." Or Ivan Parker with Gold City sing "Midnight Cry" or "There rose a Lamb?" You never heard Rusty Goodman, Jake Hess, or James Blackwood? Man where have you been.
I guess it is a matter of taste, but to say Enoch is average is a joke. By the way I have heard all the above many times and they are all great singers but none more powerful Than Enoch.
I know this was an old arguement, but I have to agree with kensintonss. Ed Enoch was a great singer, but I have to say I liked him more when he was younger. If you can find a copy of him singing, "Touch of the masters hand" I believe you might think different of him.
Ed was a powerful lead singer in his hay-day! However, his voice has not sustained the same quality to me, that Glen Payne, Jack Toney, or James Blackwood did as they aged. Also, lets not forget Jake Hess!! Jake's voice held out even with all of the health problems that he endured through out his life! Based on how much Ed boasts of himself on the Stamp's Website, you would think that he is the greatest singer of all time!
Because at that time the group was billed as "JD Sumner and the Stamps Quartet" -- that was also name used on their LPs. Another reason it was added was to aid anyone in a search.
Sorry I wasn't clear in my comment. Of course you should list it that way for the reasons you mentioned. I meant to reply to an earlier comment criticizing Ed Hill for not including JD's name on the current Stamps Quartet website. Thanks for all your great videos! I'm a great fan of the quartets you upload.
@haroldcar Harold I’m not sure how to interpret your comment to me. I am a huge fan of JD Sumner as the greatest bass singer who ever lived. My only comment about JD or anyone else was to ask why someone criticized Ed Hill for not including JD’s name as a current Stamps member.
I have no “personal problem” with JD, I care nothing about his personal life, and I’m sure God forgave anything that he needed forgiven.
Could J.D.'s daughter have something to do with Ed not mentioning J.D.? I would think Ed would want to capitalize on J.D's popularity, if nothing else.
Thanks. I've seen his name spelled McNeil since the '60's. Glad to get the spelling correctly. He's a great, great singer. Wish we had more videos of him and the Prophets. I've got 4 albums of theirs.
Roy is a great guy. I have known him for I guess over 30 yrs now. I sang with him about a month ago. He is still fantastic. I was so happy to come across the you tube video.
A couple of months ago I was on the Stamp's Quartet Website and NOWHERE did Ed mention J.D.'s Name. I was totally taken back and could not believe it!!!!!!! HOW SO VERY DISRESPECTFUL!
Carrying on God's work is NEVER blasphemy. You need to know that.
I guess he should have stopped witnessing, singing the Gospel when JD Died?? Is it about the ministry, about "JD", or is it about spreading God's word?
Seth was a good kid, hes not there anymore.
You need to focus on whats important, the word of God. not JD or anyone else.
Ed obviously owns the Stamps Quartet, and I have no problem with him touring as the Stamps Quartet. However, for him not to even mention J.D.'s name anywhere on the website, to me, is disrespectful. J.D. is the one who hired Ed to sing with the Stamps Qaurtet. Ed has no problem mentioning that he has sung with Elvis and how Elvis thought that he was such a great singer. He has no problem mentioning his own accomplishments as a singer, but cannot have a tribute on the website for J.D.!

Songwriters as well - this song is one of the hundreds written by the late Dottie Rambo.

I'd have to agree with you there, his voice did seem to loose a lot of strength when he got older. When he was younger though he was hard to beat.

Why should JD Sumner be mentioned? Sure, he owned the business at one time, but the Stamps Quartet was around long before JD was on the scene.
