that 'nen' in the end means 'little (of the previous part)' + it's an adjective ending. Long time ago, if the father was called Karhu 'Bear', his sons & daughters were called Karhunen 'little Bear' aka 'son of (a) Bear'.

If you'd translate the names, you should use some old english adjective ending, let's say -ley which many probably don't recognise as an adj. ending anymore.

So Lehtinen for example would be 'Leafley',

Miettinen 'Thoughtley', Jokinen 'Riverley'

- Guerin (<Fr.) 'Warley' :)
