  • such a boss

  • Still waiting to see more! Greetings from belgium

  • How do you taper the chain stays? or if you get them like that, how do they do it at the place they make them ?

  • This is great! i really want to see more !

    keep up the works !

  • were do you find the bearing parts for a bike I want to build an electr trick and want to find the neck and the pedel bearing parts or do you have to make them any ideas.

  • how much do you think the chromoly tubing would cost to make a 56cm bike from scratch?

  • what type of metal did you use?

  • great video, would love to see some more

  • This is great. I'd really love to see a follow up!

  • It was so refreshing to see someone actually use a file correctly instead of a haphazard back and forth fiasco. These are great video's by the way-TM

  • awesome vid!! great help! exactly what I needed to see so I can build my choper bike! thanks for sharing!!!!!

    Cheers from Mexico!!

  • awesome

  • So, Tom. Its been over a year since your last comment. Do you plan to follow up this lovely video?

    Cheers.

  • I'd like to know where he got that jig he uses to join the pukes and draw lines to the pipe.

  • that would be a lug, fuckin idiot.

  • he has a tool and die shop he makes the jigs

  • plasma cutter?!? ;)

  • reynolds?

  • I'm absolutely serious when I say: I want to learn how to do this. I built my own touring bike up from an '82 Trek 710 (about two years ago) and realized that I could quite possibly build bikes for the rest of my life and be happy.

How did you learn? Can you live comfortably off of building? How much initial investment goes into material (if you're comfortable with me asking)? How much do I need to spend in tools--other than standard bike tools, which I have a few--to get started?

  • im sorry to say but its not worth frame building independently, the only way you can make substantial money from frame building is to invest in a mass producing factory, and even then, it is a risk financially.

  • china;s got a factories to get frames from if you want to have the same as everybody else.

if you can build your own bike imagine the satisfaction!!

    and the trial an era...

i rekon it would be well worth it

  • MINT!

  • Where can i found CrMo 4130 pipe i europe?

    Is there any online shop?

  • Do you ever use power tools?

  • I have an electric coffee maker that I'm pretty fond of. But for the frames I use only hand (and sometimes foot) power.

  • Oh yeah, the stereo helps too.

  • This was awesome. Its great to be able to watch this. Tastefully done. And you've got lugging and fillet brazing covered in the same frame. Thank you.

  • Awesome video. I hate all those metal shavings laying about. Don't ever get an MRI done because they will rip out of your eyes like some horror movie.

  • yees..good vid

  • perfect music for this art. tasty tunes for fine craftsmenship. well done.

  • That looks like fucking awesome pursuit frame!!!!!! Is it going to be a track frame?

  • love to see this series finish, Tom. it is inspiring to many, as well as myself, to see such a truly hand build frame. thanks.

    barrett

  • Thanks, Tom. I look forward to seeing more in this series (especially the brazing).

I've always wondered how hand-cut miters are done. It never occurred to me that you could use the lug itself as a pattern. Very simple, and very cool.

  • My new old 531 steel road bike got stolen last week. Looked around for something comparable but I decided I'd rather build my own. Been doing some research and you're bikes are beautiful and the two videos you have posted are superb. I see this one was posted 7 months ago. Hoping you got another one on brazing technique coming up soon so I can see it done before I try it myself. Thanks.

  • Stay tuned. I plan to do a few more of these over the winter.

  • @paulmathus That sucks, I have a BSA prima made in Birmingham from reynolds 531 tubes, I picked it up in great condition for £50 and its a solid amazing bike i love it. See if you can find one.

  • so whats the point of the mitre then???

  • Tight, accurate miters (or "copes" or "notches") are the foundation for strong, reliable joints.

  • hand made bicycle!!! cool ;)

  • Nice work! Loking forward for next part(s)!

  • Thanks for posting this. I went out in the garage the day after seeing it and tried our your mitering technique (which i'd never seen before) and it worked great!
