I love the F104 it really was a rocket with wings i saw it perform at an air show in Edmonton Canada and the vertical climb was incredible just like a rocket,
The Starfighter was an amazing plane. From what I've heard: Dry wings, diamond cross-section airfoil (for supersonic), no fuel in those wings -- joke was that you could shave with the leading edge. Look at how hot they have to come in for landing. Unfortunately, this plane killed many an ill-prepared pilot (mostly in non-USA air forces).
Starfighter "missile with a man" Worlds fastest plane in low altitude 300 ft or below. The Luftwaffe lost many pilots because they were trained in Arizona desert climate and the poor weather conditions in northern europe took them by surprise. they were in active operation until may 2004.
I saw the then Bell X104 in an almost vertical climb after hearing a terribly loud boom (Breaking the sound barrier) It set a high altitude record that day. I was in San Diego Calif, in 1959 or 60. I'll never forget the bright streak, the boom and the roar of the engine. I heard about the altitude record the next day on the radio. Pretty neat for a kid...still a good memory.
It was the beginning period of a lot of life changes for me. Most of those memories aren't as good as the 104's flight.
I wonder what it would feel like to have one of these jets fly straight into your body with the spike on the nose, straight through your heart. Would it be pleasant?
Ero presente quel giorno a Pratica di Mare e ricordo che in atterraggio al primo 104 quello biposto colore turchese non si apri' il paracadute-freno e fu fermato a fondo pista da una rete.
They are using the orignal J79 the best sound german Satrfighters got a slightly modified version of the engine with no howling this is the best sound ever immagine this is yoúr morining alarmclock because every morning the starfighter passes yopur house
I am curious about how the Italy air force maintained their F104. In the latter years of F104 serviced in ROC air force, air planes were too old and lack of component parts. All the ROC air force F104 pilots knew their "horses" were unreliable. But in order to protect their country against Communist China, they had no choice to ride them. That was the reason why ROC air force sacrificed many F104 pilots.
You can watch them at airshows but I have seen them doing live fire only about 100 feet above my head and mach 1 plus. You see the plane and see the puffs of smoke from the cannons then seconds later you hear the engine and hear the cannons fire. To hear them go vertical and kick on the afterburners is a sound that will put you on the ground and make you scream. I loved that trip to Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range.

Most elegant of all the fighters. Who cares if it was a marginal dog fighter. I wonder though, it had about 15,000 lbs of thrust with AB....what would that plane be like today with the F-22 engine with 35,000 lbs. of thrust?
My first cousin flew F104 back in the late 1970's for the Republic of China Air Force in Taiwan. It was a formidable aircraft used against Chinese Communists' Russian-made MIG fighters. Unfortunately, the safety record of F104 wasn't that great, and my cousin died in a crash in 1980.

@Mirage2000H The typical F104 sound without afterburner (at 2:33) is much more of a wail than a roar. I know no other aircraft making this kind of noise.
They ARE scary to land! LOL, I love the way they do the "moose call"! If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to the howl it makes at 1:43. You can't miss it! I guess they do that by retracting the shock-cones while at full power (but you have to be sitting still, not flying or rolling!). I guess technically it used to be against the rules for some reason, but pilots did it anyway, just to hear it. I never thought about the intakes on a jet making noise; the F-104 seems to make a lot!

@KFTXBU Couldn't have said it better! My cousin was an RCAF snowbird for a total of 6 years..before this he flew our cf-105 freedom fighter...{t38 American} I told him the F104 was my favourite jet, and replied.."that's no jet it's a missle" that's why I love it! rate of climb! and that unique howl!
The incredible sound brings back good memories of Volkel AFB. The hauling whistle and the enormous smoke comming out of the exhaust, so you can see them comming from miles away, even before you could see the landing lights..... Great plane, great memories, great sound.
Pakistan Air Force had em back in the 60s and 70s and they served us well in the 65 and 71 wars with India. It was a cause of panic among IAF pilots back then.
I remember as a kid in Tucson AZ 1969 they did a demonstration of several US fighters (Vietnam war era). They included the F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief, F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger (Damn was that thing LOUD!), and most noteably the unforgettable signature "howl" of a passing F-104 Starfighter, an awesome aircraft that holds many records to this day!
I have never seen anything like this before in my life. I am too young to remeber the F-104 in service. So great to see her fly like this. Thanks for the video!!!
Glad to know I'm not the only guy who tears up over aircraft. Seriously The starfighter with it's howl! The fuel injection of the me-109, the p-51, the scream of a ju-87 stuka! a b-17 all unique as a women are, all have their own sweet charm just gotta know how to appreciate it.
@RFKFANTS67 glad i'm not the only that "tears up" can i add some of the aircraft i have seen that did the same to me? The spitfire, P-40, polikarpov, A-4 skyhawk, F-18, and vought cosair,
I love the F104 it really was a rocket with wings i saw it perform at an air show in Edmonton Canada and the vertical climb was incredible just like a rocket,

Great plane, great memories, great sound.

i love the whistling sound of em ;)
Pakistan Air Force had em back in the 60s and 70s and they served us well in the 65 and 71 wars with India. It was a cause of panic among IAF pilots back then.
Its one of my favourite aircraft ;)

I remember as a kid in Tucson AZ 1969 they did a demonstration of several US fighters (Vietnam war era). They included the F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief, F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger (Damn was that thing LOUD!), and most noteably the unforgettable signature "howl" of a passing F-104 Starfighter, an awesome aircraft that holds many records to this day!
