  • I love the F104 it really was a rocket with wings i saw it perform at an air show in Edmonton Canada and the vertical climb was incredible just like a rocket,

  • Small wings = glide ratio of a large rock. When the engine flamed-out you had one option...EJECT!

  • The Starfighter was an amazing plane. From what I've heard: Dry wings, diamond cross-section airfoil (for supersonic), no fuel in those wings -- joke was that you could shave with the leading edge. Look at how hot they have to come in for landing. Unfortunately, this plane killed many an ill-prepared pilot (mostly in non-USA air forces).

  • beautiful planes !

  • Awesome, that sound is like a drug.

  • Starfighter "missile with a man" Worlds fastest plane in low altitude 300 ft or below. The Luftwaffe lost many pilots because they were trained in Arizona desert climate and the poor weather conditions in northern europe took them by surprise. they were in active operation until may 2004.

  • is it me or do the wings look a tad small for the rest of the plane?

  • @TheHUsoldier6

Then wings are just perfect, but most other planes have ridiculously large wings :-D

  • Starfighters forever!

  • Awesome video. What a jet! Wow those landings look hot.

  • I saw the then Bell X104 in an almost vertical climb after hearing a terribly loud boom (Breaking the sound barrier) It set a high altitude record that day. I was in San Diego Calif, in 1959 or 60. I'll never forget the bright streak, the boom and the roar of the engine. I heard about the altitude record the next day on the radio. Pretty neat for a kid...still a good memory.

It was the beginning period of a lot of life changes for me. Most of those memories aren't as good as the 104's flight.

  • @ggaarryyy, it wasn't a design problem at all. They were high performance aircraft, with no room for pilot error.

  • Flying coffins..

  • What jet did the old Thunderbirds use?

  • its a BIG jet engine with small wings

  • No other aircraft looks or *sounds* like the F-104 Starfighter. Awesome vid. Thanks for sharing!

  • Due to design problem, a lot of accidents happened on F-104. Some people call it's nickname as "flying coffin"

  • @ggaarryyy actually...it was the 'widowmaker'

  • @rabbitcancer it was both ... go check wikipedia and of course it's cited sources.

  • @rabbitcancer

Actually.. they was named both. (Widowmaker and Flying Coffin). I loved the sound of it!!

  • @ggaarryyy learn to speak english asshole.

  • This is one of my favourite, all time Jet videos.

  • Nice, Molta Bella!

  • What's always amazed me about jets is how they can possibly carry enough fuel to remain in the air for more than just a few minutes .

  • My gosh ! I just got some new Vibe headphones . This is SO LOUD ! ! ! !

  • Super sounds <3 8)

  • Where are they now, I'll take one.

  • ....emozione unica sentire la musica di 9 j79

  • I wonder what it would feel like to have one of these jets fly straight into your body with the spike on the nose, straight through your heart. Would it be pleasant?

  • Beautiful planes ahead of it's time ,and great design !!!

  • Kelly Johnson what a designer. Everything he made was 50 years ahead of its time and absolutely mental.

  • That whine and harmonics are beautiful ! Anyone know if any F-104 got the smoke-less conversion from the Germans ?

  • The Lead and the Tail have no tip tanks

  • They are using the orignal J79 the best sound german Satrfighters got a slightly modified version of the engine with no howling this is the best sound ever immagine this is yoúr morining alarmclock because every morning the starfighter passes yopur house

  • Great video post. Love those Starfighters.

  • a shame to retire these planes

  • When they introduced women "fighter pilots", they had to phase out the F104.... The next logical step was UAVs...

  • @ziegle9876

    Bollocks!

  • @Madscanner Bollocks [ˈbɒləks] is a word of Anglo-Saxon origin, meaning "testicles". Correct, without those you cannot fly the F-104.

  • LOVE THAT MOAN!

    What a sexy flying machine.

(And normally I am a WWII war-bird type.)

  • no accidents in the spanish air force. The most beautiful plane of the history!

  • J79 is magic ! The 104 was a great platform for designs and testing.

Fighter jets of today would be nothing without the F104.

  • I am curious about how the Italy air force maintained their F104. In the latter years of F104 serviced in ROC air force, air planes were too old and lack of component parts. All the ROC air force F104 pilots knew their "horses" were unreliable. But in order to protect their country against Communist China, they had no choice to ride them. That was the reason why ROC air force sacrificed many F104 pilots.

  • You can watch them at airshows but I have seen them doing live fire only about 100 feet above my head and mach 1 plus. You see the plane and see the puffs of smoke from the cannons then seconds later you hear the engine and hear the cannons fire. To hear them go vertical and kick on the afterburners is a sound that will put you on the ground and make you scream. I loved that trip to Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range.

  • 9 stormo grazzanise italian air force 2004

  • 3:38 omg look at those landing speeds

  • The icon of my youth. The sound of freedom =))

    Beautiful aircraft

  • What makes that incredible howl they make?unlike any other for sure.Such an EVIL looking bird

  • Most elegant of all the fighters. Who cares if it was a marginal dog fighter. I wonder though, it had about 15,000 lbs of thrust with AB....what would that plane be like today with the F-22 engine with 35,000 lbs. of thrust?

  • In the late 60's the Puerto Rico Air National Guard had two squadrons. They were really beautiful aircraft and it was a pleasure watching them fly.

  • My first cousin flew F104 back in the late 1970's for the Republic of China Air Force in Taiwan. It was a formidable aircraft used against Chinese Communists' Russian-made MIG fighters. Unfortunately, the safety record of F104 wasn't that great, and my cousin died in a crash in 1980.

  • Where was that ?

  • @gentleman4512 Italy.

  • The Last Starfighter!

  • der sound is einfach geil

    Ciao

    Fab

  • @fabXIX63 io però ci sono stato nel 1990

  • Coolest looking, coolest sounding plane there ever was. They used to buzz our town in Germany along with the F4 - it was like a free airshow every day !

  • Just gives great respect to the genius of Kelly Johnson that a design from the 50s computed using slide rules would still be in military service post 2000.

  • They need one of these in the next Ace Combat game. One of my favorite military planes next to the F-4 Phantom.

  • i remember the time when iwas a child. When the F-104s flew over our house(which happened several times a day)all the glases were shaking in the cupboard because they were flying extremely low.Seconds later we heard the supersonic bang.I`ll never forget that.

In germany we had different nicknames for the F-104.Widowmaker,flying coffin, steelcoffin, earthnail and i gues there were many more.

  • I remember when i was a child and the F-104s flew over our house. All the glases in the cupboard were shaking and a few seconds later we hearde the big supersonic bang!

It was really getting on everones nerves but in a way i miss these times.

  • rare to see 2 F-104s 2 seater

  • Where was this? Are those private owned 104?

  • @ammobaba was in military airport Pratica di Mare (near Rome) the last official fly show

italian air force with F104 i was there fantastic day.....

  • flying coffin

  • I heard when going supersonic when they would fire the guns the plane would sometimes catch there own rounds bouncing off the canopy !! Total bad ass !! XD

  • That was the right stuff. A+

  • 116 death german figther pilots and over 300 planes lost in the german airforce!

In Germany we called the plane "Widowmaker"!!!

  • @a2peperoni I think it has a similar reputation everywhere it was used.. In Turkey I heard some people calling it "the flying coffin" which also was a nick name of F100 super sabres

  • Awesome sound !

  • They ruined the value of them painting them those gay colors -.- paint them with REAL military colors and then they would be more famous seeing.

  • Wow, this is great!!!, I need more!!! I love that sound!!!

  • To say that they weren't fast and beautiful would be the understatement of the century.

The distinctive whine of its engine brings back memories of when I was a kid living in Germany. Awesome!

  • @T1w4z: Kein Wunder!

  • my father was working on these planes!!.they were very problematic!

  • A private company still flies them. Best fighter ever!

  • @Ddraig64 tell me you're joking, F-104 is one of the worse aircraft in history for the mission it was selected to perform as a NATO fighter bomber

  • Hats off to the Italian Air Force for keeping such an amazing jet aloft for so long! The memories are still fresh in our minds......

  • very nice videos tov toda

  • Brings me back to my wonderful years at 334 sqn. Bodø Airstation, Norway, 1977-1980

  • The F-104, the Widowmaker.

  • I simply love how they sound when they soar through the sky :)

  • @Mirage2000H The typical F104 sound without afterburner (at 2:33) is much more of a wail than a roar. I know no other aircraft making this kind of noise.

  • those are courageous pilots, those planes look scary to land.

  • They ARE scary to land! LOL, I love the way they do the "moose call"! If you don't know what I'm talking about, listen to the howl it makes at 1:43. You can't miss it! I guess they do that by retracting the shock-cones while at full power (but you have to be sitting still, not flying or rolling!). I guess technically it used to be against the rules for some reason, but pilots did it anyway, just to hear it. I never thought about the intakes on a jet making noise; the F-104 seems to make a lot!

  • this plane is cool&sexy!

  • This plane was beautifull when he was nude ... silver

  • Impressive! Love the distinct sound of their engines... used to watch them flying out of CFB Baden-Sollingen.

  • @georgebushisaknob

I used to watch them in and out of Soellingen too we used to holiday in the Black Forest as kids in the

    mid 70's

  • Bellissimi!!!!

  • I used to love watching the 104's in Cold Lake AB as a kid. The unforgetable howl of the J-79 was very memorable.

  • Awesome looking plane!!!

  • I've always heard that it was a very unforgiving aircraft.

  • Yep, in case of a bad maneuver it went along without warning for a while and then suddenly freaked out.

  • Pratica di Mare 2004. Agostini Alessandro: PRESENTE.

  • Nothing is like the jet sound of the 104. I grew up with it living right next to Jever Air Force Base in the seventies.

Hearing this sound brings back the good old times ! ;O)

  • I lived on airforce bases all my life as my dad worked avionics and I have to say this is my all time favorite plane.Love the sound it makes!!

We called it the CF-104 Widow Maker

  • Mitico la bara volante!!!!

  • no its real

  • Look everybody in the minute 4:01 the F-104 bounce wow dangerous.

  • That formation look --- makes anyone want to fly! Bravo! Excellent flying indeed!

  • HAF(Hellenic Air Force in Greece) has many F-104 Starfighters on duty!!

  • For your information: The Greek Air Force retired the F-104 Starfighter in 1993!

  • lol When I say on duty, I mean that they fly, not for long flights or dogfights with turkey, but airshows and education flights...

  • The Air Force aerobatic squadron "New Hellenic Flame" flies the F-104 Starfighter in airshows? You must be joking!

  • haha he probably saw the blue angels and thought ''aah the greek f104s'' :p

  • Beautiful, tight formation flying!

    Bravo, Aeronautica Militare

  • Man, that's a hot approach.

    Power on. 170kts. Wild.

  • Hmmmmm....I don't see how, the F-104 was certainly not a dogfighter by any stretch of the imagination. To make it more manueveable than the F-15 would require the airframe to be so different that it would be a completely different plane.

  • che giornata fantastica!!!!addio spillone

  • Great Starfighter stuff. I saw the German demonstration team years ago when they showed three of these. It was almost as if going slow to them, was 600mph.

  • WOLF PLANE AUUUUUUUUUUU!!xD

  • Saw 3 of these fly at Dayton last year. Amazing sound. Love the smoke of the turbojets as well. Much more exciting. Just the sight of this plane would have scared the enemy into waiving the white rag...

  • God Bless the Missile With The Man In It

  • @KFTXBU lol

  • To an air force family dependants of taiwan like me. The meaning of F104 was widow maker. It kill many many taiwan air force pilots.

    .

  • @dirpumon5810

During the years when F104 served in ROC Air Force, a total of 113 F104 crashed with 60 casualties.

  • @dirpumon5810

F104 looks pretty but a bit difficult to maneuver.

During the years when F104 served in ROC Air Force, a total of 113 F104 crashed with 60 casualties.

  • @KFTXBU Couldn't have said it better! My cousin was an RCAF snowbird for a total of 6 years..before this he flew our cf-105 freedom fighter...{t38 American} I told him the F104 was my favourite jet, and replied.."that's no jet it's a missle" that's why I love it! rate of climb! and that unique howl!

  • Amazing sound!!!

  • uno dei più belli aerei mai progettati.

  • my grandfather used to be a mechanic for a battalion of Canadian F-104 Starfighters. :) he even got a flight up in one once during training

cool vid^^ i love these planes, just like my grandfather.

  • Damn, look at the landingspeed of those machines!

  • Beautiful !!!

  • What an orchestra!

  • After all these years, thats still one good looking machine to me.

  • Nice colors for that otherwise mearly unspectacular look

  • the sound those planes produce when they fly together is absolutely amazing.

  • Nice vid, bella video.

    Awesome sound!

  • The crowd mostly consisted of undertakers rubbing their hands with glee.

  • i love that sucking when powered and of course the smoke (L)

  • great video nice jet and lovely sound

  • nice video

  • WOW!! Great flying, simply incredible paint jobs!! Every other Air Force in the world is in their six.

  • True Meaning of "Air Wolf" remember chuck yeager trying to fly that plane into space on the "Right Stuff"

  • The incredible sound brings back good memories of Volkel AFB. The hauling whistle and the enormous smoke comming out of the exhaust, so you can see them comming from miles away, even before you could see the landing lights..... Great plane, great memories, great sound.

  • i love the whistling sound of em ;)

Pakistan Air Force had em back in the 60s and 70s and they served us well in the 65 and 71 wars with India. It was a cause of panic among IAF pilots back then.

Its one of my favourite aircraft ;)

  • The Missile with a man in it ..

  • I remember as a kid in Tucson AZ 1969 they did a demonstration of several US fighters (Vietnam war era). They included the F-4 Phantom, F-105 Thunderchief, F-101 Voodoo, F-102 Delta Dagger (Damn was that thing LOUD!), and most noteably the unforgettable signature "howl" of a passing F-104 Starfighter, an awesome aircraft that holds many records to this day!

  • Man, what a sound!

  • Nice paint jobs on the aircraft. Whoever put this together did a good job at video editing. Cool vid.

  • awsome video. gotta love that sound of the starfighter!

  • I have never seen anything like this before in my life. I am too young to remeber the F-104 in service. So great to see her fly like this. Thanks for the video!!!

  • awesome sound. great video, someone who at last doesnt ruin it with music!!!

  • 2004 PRATICA DI MARE ITALY......Io c'ero!!! Grande F-104!

  • god i love the f-104

  • Glad to know I'm not the only guy who tears up over aircraft. Seriously The starfighter with it's howl! The fuel injection of the me-109, the p-51, the scream of a ju-87 stuka! a b-17 all unique as a women are, all have their own sweet charm just gotta know how to appreciate it.

  • @RFKFANTS67 glad i'm not the only that "tears up" can i add some of the aircraft i have seen that did the same to me? The spitfire, P-40, polikarpov, A-4 skyhawk, F-18, and vought cosair,
