The reason why this is happening is because Bernard Von NotHaus and the Liberty Dollar is associated with a activist organization for ending the Fed, with the Liberty Dollar being a vehicle for that. Even though NotHaus claims that the Liberty Dollar is not meant as legal tender, it is clearly meant to be competitive with the national currency and so...the government "got" him using the massive library of criminal laws in the US code to find some charges that would stick.
