I think that Sarah Blasko has a horrible voice and I really cannot understand what she is doing near the music industry. She destroys Yellow Brick Road, she cannot get to the high notes and she really stuffs up "Flame Trees". I think she should really, without being nasty, look for a new career.
Urgh. Blaskemy strikes again. Hearing this put me off my food, the same way that hearing her Blaskemous version of Flame Trees did a while back. Thank goodness she's got her fans, coz they'll support her mind-numbing mediocrity. Meanwhile, something REALLY interesting and talented will crop up and they'll blink out of their hollow-eyed glaze and realise they've been drugged into an emo-folk stupor. Talent shows ARE circumsribed trash, but HOW is Sarah Blasko changing the face of music exactly??
@BluesGee "us" and "alone" don't really belong in the same sentence do they?? And this is a forum. Where people are welcome to lodge their opinion. I don't like her cover, and i don't give a toss what you think about it. :) Now go and put the kettle on.
@missbeaver26 Who has really changed the face of music that has come from those shows? Kurt Cobain or Madonna wouldn't have gotten on American Idol, but they made huge impacts on music forever
@BackToTheFutrell who is talking about changing the face of music? I am saying she sings this song terribly and I am not the only one who thinks this. If she were judged on her singing ability from this song she would not rate highly. As for Madonna changing the face of music that's debatable! A talentless entertainer who has only sold cd's by being controversial and changing her look, her music isn't that special and her ideas are all 'borrowed' from other people. She is a parasite.
We all agree the best will always be Elton's cause it is his. Now, I like her voice, definitely a nice try. I will say I like it... but there's something missing. This song should be sad, you are dying, saying goodbye broken hearted, the sadness and sorrow are there... I just heard the Keane version and it is better cause they really got the song. I also found the dream theater version and it is also good!
This is the first time I've heard this song and actually heard and understood the individual words. Example: I would have bet my life on the fact that there was no mention of a "horny back toad". Love it. Also love her version of "Flame Trees".
I must agree with shade231 and winnetouch, this song is performed well by her but this song definitely needs falsetto! Good bye yellow brick without falestto is like cone without ice cream...
she's got a good voice but she just can't do anywhere near the high of john. And without it, the song looses the zest. Not her fault it's like a Frenchman trying to pronounce the letter h lol.
The cover looses much because a woman sings it. No offense to all the women out there but the falseto that elton sings just ads that "umf" to the song that this version is lacking. It's a nice cover but it's missing that certain thing. I still enjoyed it though :).
Her voice has some dry cracks which ,to me, perfectly fits with this heartbreaking song. This guitar solo also catches the lonesome vibe of the song meaning.
Respects to original, and Big Props to her version. My personal most favorite version.
What a beautiful rendition of classic Elton John. Having listened to Elton's tune many times never did I give the horny-backed toad one thought, nor did I make a note to buy more tonic water. I will listen again now. Maybe the gist of it all will dawn tonight.
It's Sarah, she doesn't have to hit all the high notes like others, it's her way of singing it and I love it. Would be boring it everyone sang it the same way.
@azaraangelwings11 dude, it's her version of it and it's great. I can't think of anyone else that could do this to this song without disrespecting elton. I am a fan of the original, but this is just a nice simple female version done by an aussie and it's awesome.
hey timour and god in low watever. thats what makes her so amazing .such an honest voice, not fake in any technical" tweak this up, tone that down, with a heap of gadgets way " to make em sound perfect ..life is full of imperfections and thats what makes it amazing go listen to britteny if you want perfect but fake bunch of haters get a life
This is a great cover. I prefer it to the original. The whole point of the song is the wish to return to a simpler way of living. This requires an interpretation of precisely the type that Sarah Blasko gave. Very simple, straightforward, slow, non pretentious, no back up vocals, nothing fancy. I listen to it many times a day, never get tired of it.
If anyone whining about her raspy voice, or for her to step it up, could hear the entire interview precluding to this *capture*, (recorded live at Triple J studios Australia) you would hear that Sarah was not well on this day and made apologies for her pitch. She could easily just have not fronted up for the small gig, but she did, professionals don't call out sick! This is an awesome take on the original, c'mon!!!
@TMUSICIAN too low?.......how about too stupid. i was going to say you sound a bit mongoloid please try stuffing a violin where the sun don't shine. or try suicide next time. thank you.
@TMUSICIAN I totally agree. Why didn't she sing it up a half step or a tone or something? That'd prob make it too high for her actually. The best cover of this tune was done by Katie Noonan. It's unbelievable! You should check it out...
@TMUSICIAN You can't hear the music and it is not cause of your ears. listen it is a great thing that people like you don't end up playing with great legends that some times like Cobain, CASH, ETC. people who might sing out of key (not perfect) but yet are very creative, original, with great vision and lots of emotion. This usually ends up connecting with people big time. It's like a sonic postcard straight to the heart. Instead of a perfect pitched bland etc. Ah heck go buy some feelings.
@hundknabe Just saying I like the Elton John version better. It isn't like I was trying to say she has no talent. She is a great singer, and this is a very good version of the song.
Just saying that I feel that way. Sorry if my having an opinion and all gets on your nerves.
@Psychonaut117 No your opinion didn't get on my nerves at all - just pointing out that she aimed for a different interpretation. I lvoe the original, but think Blasko's version brings something new and interesting
Sorry, but she's not even playing the right chords. It's fine that this meant to be a stripped guitar+vocal "unplugged" version, but she's not even playing it right, she's basically doing the same 3 chords over and over. This is probably my favorite Elton John song, and I really don't like how she did it.
you cannot compare this to the original; it's a stripped down version - just a voice, guitar and mandolin(?). elton's got layers of instruments and backup vocals set up to make a fantastic, epic work. apples and oranges.
This is so offensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goin to see Temper Trap tomorrow night and SHE'S supporting....think I'll stay in the pub till this wailing banshee has finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hmm I actually was in a massage palour today and heard this. I like this version. Yes I agree that although some parts are a bit flat she makes up for it with the haunting effect of her vocals on 'road' and the other high notes. Its good in that it made me listen even when I am not a Sarah Blasko fan.
Pretty...a bit thin and flat in spots... some of the acoustic chord interpretations don't work but if I had never heard Elton's song, this one would sound good enough. Not amazing to my ears in any event.
That was really nice. I gave it a 4/5 rating but really meant to give it 4.5/5. She has such a sweet fragile voice that lends itself very well to this particular tune! =)
A gorgeous, soulful and unique voice, but I have to agree a bit about those high notes, which are supposed to be climactic but she just can't give them enough oomph.
You're right. She can't project the way the best trained singers can. She does have a unique quality to her voice. But you can't ignore proper training, either.
You stupid philistines. She did this with a huge cold, as stated in the interview with Triplej if you bothered to listen to the full thing, instead of commenting in ignorance.
never realised what a good song this is 'til i heard this version.
