Remember this... Actually did this the first time when speaking to HP-support, and they said it was a feature to check that the motor-control of the scanner was OK. Fun way of implementing though.. :-)
HP Scanjet 5100C (both paraller as well as SCSI versions) have this same eastern egg as well. :) in paraller port version, you only need to push green scan button while pluggin the power cord.
but remember that if it's plugged to PC, windows will go totally nuts.

@zeeman674 It has been a while I tested it, but in Win98 it did lock up the computer completely. you got no error, blue screen, nothing. It just went completely halt.
