i was first introduced to avacado's with these types of avacado's in Inglewood, CA. I been looking for them for decades! Thought i had been dreaming. NOW, i am trying to find where to buy one in Ventura County...Any ideas? italiangrl202@yahoo.com
In forthrightness, per some comments here - I cannot understand the choice to use latex paint (synthetic chemical-based?) on a/the tree. While there may be the sunburn protection benefit, what of the overall detrimental effects (air, water, and soil)? It seems to me that part of such endeavors is to strive to forego (find alternatives) to synthetic chemical use of all kinds - including plastic items.
I got a mexicola grande at home depot. I'm in Houston, TX (Zone 9a). It is about 6 feet tall right now. I planted it early June 2011. I do see new growth on several of it's branches. But some of the original leafs have seem to turn brown last month. We are experiencing multiple days of 100F - 104F afternoons. I white washed the trunk with 50-50 water-white latex paint. I do not over water it. Would this be normal? Do I need to water more frequently? I haven't added mulch.
(Avocado A and B trees.mov) is a video and its very helpfull in leting you know how to polinate your avocoto tree and it explaines the avocoto tree has botth mail and feamale parts but you may need a nother speasys of tree to help polinate it if its to worm but any how the video explaines it and i saw your video so i thawt id let you know but it could very well be why you havent produced any avocotos.
Lawl!!! I,ve got my avocado tree indoors (we've bad winters in romania) and it's 2 years old...And it's just 40 cm tall. Yours is 3 and it's enormous. Bad climate...
Hi. You need to prune that tree back (cut the main leader) to promote more lateral branching and a bush-like structure. This serves multiple purposes, 1-it protects the bark from sunburn in the summer, 2-it protects the bark from frost bite (due to wind) in winter. Also the more branches you have the more production you get. You may also need a B flower Avocado tree next to it in order for polination to take place. Mexicolas are A flowers.
@growingyourgreens Definitely after all possible threat of frost is gone, right at the beginning of spring. Now because this will be a big cut back (cut 1/3 of the main leader), more limbs will be exposed to direct sunlight, so get some latex white paint and mix 50/50 with water and paint the trunk and all green areas exposed to direct sunlight (noon and forward morning sun is ok). If you don't do this the sun will burn your tree. Don't expect fruit this year.
We planted one of these in NorCal 2 years ago, and it's just sitting there and not growing. We feed it, drainage is good. It sits between a sapote tree and a macadamia tree, and they do great. Any thoughts on what's keeping it from growing more?
Hmm, I've heard the opposite about cold hardiness between the mexicola & mex.grande. I heard from many sources that the grande is a bit less hardy than the mexicola. They say mexicola is more "pure" & the grande is hybridized. I have also heard @ cloudforest cafe that grande is less tasty than mexicola. I have both, but haven't planted them yet, not sure what to do?!
Has this tree given fruit yet? If so, how many avos did you get & how long has it been planted in the ground?
If you prune it it'll grow outwards like a bush. Also, If you're worried about the tree getting sun burn. I was on growquest site and they deal with all the different types of avocado plants and they use a water/ latex paint spray to spray on the leaves and branch if it gets too much direct sun light. And this paint doesn't harm the plant. Check it out. If you go to the people I subscribed to its growquest, that guy there really knows his stuff.
the commercial growers in n. california use bacon, a cold hardy mexican with better quality fruit than the mexicola grande. if you live in the bay area, you dont need to do anything for the mexicola, its good down 24 F, and can take a hit to 20 and still recover. The most cold hardy is the stewart. you tree will die young from root rot say after 20 years unless it is elevated bed and you added sand and compost to the soil. in general you dont want to top and avocodo like you might prune apricot.
@BuildingNumber7 , Thanks. I have an avocado tree in the yard and they get HUGE!!! i wasn't quite able to I.D But, i never knew there were so many different types. That Wilson one is pretty GNARLY, as well as that black one. Well thanks again.
