  • How many times can we play this tune before busting the strings?

  • @MrFranciscoFidalgo . Haha, I dont think that will happen. I hardly ever break strings, and cant remember the last time I broke one using D tuners.

  • Is this the tuning that Alison Brown uses in the song "Shoot the Dog"?

What are some songs played in D-Tuning?

I like it when the banjo has more of an "angry" sound like Shoot the Dog.

  • @TheARDENWOOD

No, Alison is in G tuning, but playing in Gm, for the tune Shoot The Dog. Famous D tuning songs are the one I show here, Home Sweet Home, Reuben, John Henry, Green MT Hop, 8th Of January, Texas BBQ and many more. But if you understand D tuning, you can play any melody you like, there.

  • Sure thing-glad to help. I could be wrong about the nylon. Try them and see is the best way to know for sure.

  • Hi - thanks for responding to my query. That`s a shame that you don`t think it would work. I`ll maybe try some banjo forums and see if I can get some more opinions. The banjo needs some major work done on it, including new pegs - however D-tuners are pretty costly, so I don`t want to buy them unless I know for sure they would work. Anyway, thanks for your reply, and thanks for the videos, there is some really useful stuff in them.

  • I dont think nylon would work, as its too prone to slipage on the tuner posts. I would try silver wound folk strings instead. Graphite makes excellent lube. You can rub a #2 pencil in the slots.

  • Hi - thanks for the video, I`m getting increasingly interested in D tuners - do you know if you can use D tuners with nylon strings ?

I play a roughly 40 year old open back with nylon strings, it started life as a long arm banjo, but after a while I chopped it, so it is now a normal length, but I like nylon strings. Also I am not sure if the neck would take steel strings - too much tension.

If you can, what would be a good lube on the nut for nylon strings.

    Thanks.
