I've heard Factions is the fastest way to the level cap, but harder for new people to adjust to.

Nightfall or Prophecies is your best bet; I would go for Nightfall or try and get a bundle deal.

Well there not even expansions really. Each one is a seperate game. You can only play against people who have the same game as you. So if you get nightfall, You can play against other nightfall players. Nightfall, factions or prophecies are the ones to go for. If you buy guild wars original, then you should buy eye of the north, because EOTN is not a stand alone game, that is the only true expansion.

You dont need to get the game and an expansion. All expansions, apart from eye of the north, are stand alone, and dont need the original to play the others. And considering that each expansion is a stand alone story, whichever one you buy, its like you will have a completely new game.

sry, but you are wrong, if you have the factions pack; ritualist can summon spirits, yes necromancer summons mobs, but spirits aro more effective, specially when the foe is hexed
