Why must all people of any race be put into the same box? To say that black people are immoral is both judgmental and racist. There are people of every race with varied degrees of education, social graces and experiences. Everyone is not oreintated or exposed to the same environment. Many black people live moral, decent and upstanding lives. They love and worship God and respect themselves and others. They are socially aware and strive to educate themselves and others who are willing to learn!
Why does the black community want Tyler perry to lie about black people as if there is this huge percentage of black men that don't leave the woman to raise a child on their own? Sure there are a small percentage of negros that's on point but the rest are rift raft and blacks know it.....
I'm not the biggest Tyler Perry fan myself, BUT, why would Tyler be interested in being invited to the festival when he has millions of people coming to see his shows regardless. Tyler has his own studio, own t.v. shows, and more MONEY then all these people dissing him. I'm sure Tyler is not losing sleep because he's not being invited to a play festival. They talking like he's waiting on them.
Lmao it's too funny how these black hypocrites try to act like they're better than everybody now...what happened to creative freedom...i guess when a brotha is outshining all of these so called legends (Larry and Spike) they get to hating which is a shame to see because as black people we should be coming together and respecting one another instead of tearing wall downs but tyler is going to do what he's going to do haters can keep hating
I don't believe that people or fans of old are better than people or fans of Tyler's shows, but i do believe there has been a change with in the culture itself and it is being portrayed in what people are accepting to watch. Tyler while funny can be compared to Amos and Andy, in that such content does portray buffoonery, I think what the biggest issue really is, Tyler a black man and role model for the black community wears a dress, Dave Chappelle gave light to this situation.
wow, the people who attend Tyler Perry Shows (me and my friends) include doctors, lawyers, accountants... the real common denominator is that they are mostly Christians, who can actually stomach the message, the morality that his plays stands for...
@BROOKLYNBEAST226 You're a fucking idiot. If whites ever decide to have a Final Solution like the Nazi's did people like Tyler Perry will make it so much easier for citizens to turn their heads!! Look up Khalid Al Mansour on Tony Brown or Francis Cress Welsing (same show) for that matter. They have an understanding of how this clownish behaivior is used for the benifit of those who say blacks are sub-human. People like you really need to stop worshiping the white man's money. Stop cooning
@ellisonwrigh60srage Why don't you shut the fuck up you fuck'en thunder cunt. All i fuck'en said was that i like to see my own black people make money and being sucessful. What the fuck is your problem? I don't even know what the fuck you are talking about. So go and stick a dynamite up your ass, lite it, blow your bitch ass up & die slow you muthafuka! Next time keep your stupid ass ignorant comments to yourself bitch!
So are these ignorant people saying that intelligent people don't want to see Tyler Perry plays?? How IGNORANT of a statement to make. Black people always find a way to bring each other down whereas whites are always embracing the new/young generations! It is so sad and I will never uderstand....only God knows why people are so closed-minded.
Main stream hollywood style TV promote the Tyler Perry style stuff and as long as black people who choose to dig what he's doing, then this guy is going to be around for a long time. He's play on the weakness of black women and down play black men as villians and sometime you might see one light skin brother in his movie or a white doing the right thing by black women.
@mightyblack1 what tyler plays and movies have you been looking at? he has equally good bad ugly weak and strong men and women. out off all his plays and movies how many white men are in them? you see one movie with a hispanic man in it going with a black woman and you lump them all together. and who cares if the brother is light as day or black as midnight a brother is a brother....... i have many different colors in my family tree just.
@Lashid4u Steven Spielberg was payed nothing to make "Schindler's List" I have a strong feeling that Tyler Perry would never make a movie for free no matter how noble the cause. He's a mogul with an empire to run. I repeat though Thank God for Tyler Perry.
@Mario54World You clearly havent seen how much steven spielberg is worth? Hes a billionaire, he could buy tyler perry! Whats one free film to him! Thats not a rational comparison at all!
@Lashid4u It's not always the most complex writing but it is what it is, and his work is always for the collaboration process to take place with actors. Great actors make his work shine. He doesn't show his genius in his writing. Actors bring great stuff out of his work. I repeat. Thank God for Tyler Perry. If you reread my comments, you'll see that I'm not dissing Tyler Perry. He's doing what every director in the world is trying to do. He's great, but not as noble as some think.
@Lashid4u Tyler Perry is a genius. Well, aesthetically his shots are kind of boring and don't have the aesthetic depth of his contemporaries, but his style of writing is uniquely his. It's like melodrama ( which means that there is basically good and evil in the world and not room for much complexity ) that boils to the surface and everyone is rich for the experience with a Tyler Perry twist on things. I'm criticizing him for an institutional point of view. But thank God for Tyler Perry.
@Lashid4u And when his writers reach retirement, I hope they have a pension stored away. The entertainment unions such as WGA are helpful to entertainers. Tyler Perry seems to be trying to dismantle the system by creating his own system, but that's just not helpful to individual artists that work for him. The actors know better. They know to get their SAG rate. The actor unions have had a history of such scandal that they would never put up with what he does to his writers.
@Lashid4u I think you misread my comments. I'm a supoporter of Tyler Perry. You can't pretend like the man doesn't know how to make money though. He doesn't hire writers in the Writers Guild Association. The WGA had a big hit and strike last year and Tyler Perry isn't making it any easier for the, IOt's a disservice to everyone really that he doesn't hire writers in the WGA and has his own unique team. I'm not saying he should change writers, but his writers could easily enter into the WGA,
His films and characters are coonish and stupid. He uses black woman and the church to get were he is and now he is trapped playing a pre-op transsexual for the rest of his career on screen . He has the money now ,so he needs to come out the closet and at least try to make something good at his movie studios. Make a movie about a courageous black man. he hates black men like the rest of Hollywood .Other races laugh at us for even supporting his shows and movies.
@MrMandingus He does that to make money. The man knows how to make money. He shot "Diary of a Mad Black Woman at his mansion" and saved on thousands of production costs and he does things like that often. And he (which kind annoys me) doesn't hire writers in the Writers Guild Association, so he saves on paying the WGA flat rate but he takes GREAT care of ppl that stick w/ him. I think he does things he has to to make money and finance projects he really cares about.
@Mario54World Please. He took a risk in making these movies on black women, because black actresses have been told that "no one wants to see a black woman on screen", and sistas have been called "box office poison". But that's how passionate he is about the black woman, and the black family (if you saw his plays and TRULY examined his movies, you'd see that he is VERY MUCH for black men, as well - Why Did I, was, more critical of the bw) and Madea represents the Big Mama who is no longer
@MrMandingus wrong, he caters for Christians... if you've been to one of his shows you'll find that most of his audience consists of college educated christian blacks... and family.
Why can't two distinct genres of Black theater be appreciated for what they are. Its ok to have a preference, but why do we as Black people feel the need to compete with each other and tear one another down. You never see Tom Cruise making disparaging remarks about Brad Pitt. They both have their own fanbase and their goal is to entertain that fanbase instead of obsess over what the next actor is doing. Does all Black theater have to conform to one standard? Who died and made ANYBODY king?
@tincredible WORD. But that's how negroes do, because we've been trained to tear each other down. Tyler is not the problem. Good Times was not the problem. The problem is the industry not giving more exposure to other directors and film makers - that's not Tyler's fault. There should be room for Good Times as Well as the Cosby show ..Room for Spike Lee as well as Tyler Perry. We wont focus on the REAL enemy, as usual.
@Lashid4u I am in total agreement! Once we learn how to unite, we can build empires and attain generational success. Spike and Tyler should be joining forces and creating something bigger than the both of them. Closed-minded, one-dementional mainstream Hollywood is the real enemy.
Whoever said this doesnt effect people NOT of african american roots is wrong. A misconception, much like Rap, that black folk act as they do in Tyler Perry movies and plays is on -the rise-. It was one thing for non-african americans to do it, but, when a african american does it... its suddenly okay. Whoa. What a hypocritical, double-standard complex THAT is.
Tyler Perry's work speaks to those who go to chuuch on sunday and afterwards eat at the chuuch dinner! There is a place for his type of movies but to generalize and say that that's ALL that black people do is WAY OUT OF LINE! He does have an audience because it does actually exist. Spike Lee's movies speaks to the crowds that enjoy thick plots, intellectually stimulating subject matter. Unfortunately 4 Spike there are more people who enjoy bafoonery and less intellectually stimulating material.
@dogshit71 I think that by the end of Tyler Perry's career the ends will justify the means. He produced Precious. And if not for his adaptation, producing, and directing "For Colored Girls" the upcoming Oscars seems like it pretty much has no voices from African Americans. In fact, I believe his project is actually the only one with African Americans that has any kind of Oscar buzz. And Thandie Newton (brilliant British actress) and Whoopi Goldberg and Phylicia Rashad and other greats too
@dogshit71 Yeah, I found REALLY empowered watching Girl 6 and She Hates Me! That was more wak and stereotypical than anything Tyler could EVER do! The phony "proud kneegrows" kill me...lol
See my video: "Stop Worrying About Being Stereotyped", black people
and his plays are not selling SEX nor is it selling VIOLENCE to our community. it's merely telling a story that SOMEBODY can identify with, about some bodies CRAZY grandma that still wont get it right, or about someones cousin on drugs, or about the fact that some people are LIVING in mental and physical abusive relationships or HOMES ! SO PLEASE PPL. Spare me the cake frosting conversation about what u think this argument is about and look at the real picture
For I believe that this argument is really about the TOPICS that are covered in the performances but it's being masked BY argument that the Quality of the Play it's self and it's characters is not good enough for the National Black Theatre Festival. I see Tyler Perry Plays as VERY professional ( the actors stay in character through out the play, the story is consistent, the audience can relate, the talent of the actors is PHENOMENAL!
It's just another way to bring about awareness.. If you look at Blue collar comedy on the country music channel it does the SAME thing about red neck white people. I am from Winston Salem and I attend the NBTF every year that It comes and I would LOVE to see a Tyler Perry play being offered on the line up.
. When it comes down to art ( Music, dance and theatre) I believe that there is a place for EVERYTHING!.. and this same thing happens to ALL RACES.. I believe that Tyler Perry is doing what a good number of plays do. Show us the negative views in a comical light.... YES it is funny, but it should get you to thinking " Do I really ACT that way?".
i love how just about every person posting a comment supporting tyler perry is boarder-line illiterate lol. i guess black people like watching their race being pulled back into the 1850s.
i love how the shit doesnt affect your white ass but you in here stirring up more shit...u pussy ass butthole eating mothafucka..
i hate you evil tolerant ass mothafuckas
then have the nerve to come in here questioning people..get your bitch ass up outta here cause you dont give a fuck about black people u fucking devil..you probably want more silly ass images of black people.if you aint a devil you one of the fake ass give the church your money for salvation ass niggas ....serious biz clown
im black... which is why i hate when people like tyler perry profit off of the ignorant stereotypes of black america. imo i dont want my children looking up to some guy that is bringing black americans back 100 years.
fuck him mane from the bottom of my heart fuck that nigga and all you shallow ass hollow souled niggas that like this bullshit...ole faggot gened mothafuckas
they put a chip in many of you niggas or something
the image isnt as important as the moral of these kids when they see positive images or someone to look up to in the movies...but go head with your sarcasm...cause this shit is serious and it doesnt affect "you people"...just black folks
as a black person i dont want the world thinking that we all are ignorant ass mother fuckers like the characters that tyler perry displays. i have this thing called pride...maybe you should look it up and stop supporting this idiot
Leon Hamlin is full of crap.....I make well over 6 figures, have a college degree, 3 kids with college degrees and have skills in the art...does that make us uneducated because we like Tyler Perry? Hilarious!
@deepsix7 but that college degree doesnt give you the tools to see through the bullshit though obviously.
shit is what it is at this point...the same shit niggas think is cute...is the same shit that stagnates niggas.
if you cant see the logic in that...what good is a fucking degree man? Its not cool to laugh at your fucking self in a clowns position..you dont think its funny that there is no balance to all of this silly ass shit...thats all im crying about...where the fuck is the balance?
Please! all you ethnically correct blacks why don't you all support spike lee and we southerners support Tyler Perry. He has a plegra of entertainers and celebrities in his show what does spike and you proper blacks have?
@gerlsus thats just it...this bullshit is what they want in place of spike lee and yall gonna sit up here and act like yall really dont see why they would feel better about niggas acting silly on tv as opposed to lets say a movie about malcolm x or a movie about the black families struggles like crooklyn or fight the power a movie about race relations...u mothafuckas cant play stupid 2 us..yall play stupid to white people..but not black people..you know wtf is going on..who r u fooling mane?
@2blakandbold ...smooth ass mind game/diversion mane...this shit is garbage....stop condoning this bullshit...if you look at the fact that this is the image
white america is more comfortable with."the clown or faggot" you will realize why they substituted nwa for public enemy..and tyler perry for spike lee...jews run hollywood....and thats all they're gonna allow niggas to do ...make mockerys of themselves..and you niggas just eat that simple minded shit up..
Who or whatever you are, don't get it twisted. My point is that because I happen to enjoy what Tyler Perry doesn't make me un-educated. Now, if you and other haters out there don't appreciate the art, don't support it, but be at Tyler because he found his niche in LIfe...the last time I heard was that you, Mr. Hamlin weren't around to support Tyler Perry when he was homeless and abused.....and don't pay any of his bills...don't hate the player...well, you know the rest!
so u still gonna run some ole bullshit script about hatin...the goto script for niggas......and u have the degree...you might have a chip in you or something allready but u not blind and u not gonna run that hater script on me either..r.kelly raped a child niggas used hater against those that thought it was foul...u see that shit...u not fooling anyone.
HBCU? u brown paper baggin or what mane .fuck is your program? enough people like it script hunh? Fuck is u a follower? weak reply
The type of creative work he produces and they don't have to like it, because there are more of US who actually appreciate his work. Some of US take ourselves too seriously. I have people in my family who "would NEVER see a Tyler Perry film or play because they have become too "educated" to understand just how real Tyler keeps it when he plays Madea.
when i first saw this video i thought malcolm was just being hateful because his shows weren't doing well. When you become enlightened you see things differently. Tyler's madea is a modern day minstrel, you have an african male depicting a black sterotypical woman. I'm straddling both sides of the fench, love tp's movies but at the same time malcolm makes a good point.
Please, just look at Larry and look at Tyler. All I'm saying is if he wants to talk about intelligence, he need to take a look in the mirror literally. SCARY!
Also I didn't start watching plays until Tyler Perry came along. I think Mr. Perry has influenced the younger black generations to be more interested in different forms of art.
Everyone has a right to his or her opinion. All I have to say is yes Tyler Perry's plays are someone what predictable but he gives a lot of good advice about life in a funny way. I as a young black woman have learned a lot from his plays and I am entertained at the same time. I mean if you don't like his plays don't watch them it's as simple as that. What's so bad about Tyler Perry's plays?
Riddle me this; If it's called National Black Theatre Festival why are only certain Blacks invited? Why would anyone support something like this? This gentleman said if you look at the "quality"...are you serious? Last I check I love Shakespeare and I love one man/woman showes and I enjoy Tyler Perry movies. So when you say quality does not include people such as myself? Yeah & your sun glasses & perm pervade quality?!? Go figure...loser.
What Theo talking about? Did he not appear on Def Poetry? You can't get no more urban than that. Stop the hate on Tyler, he is employing a lot of people, and that is a good thing.
I find his plays and the sining to be some of the best. If he was as some of you have posted he would not be worth millions. He pay his dues and he is now reaping the benefits!
I rahter look at his plays/movies than some of the ones that claim to be "professional"! What a laugh. :)
Tyler is a terrible writer and his plays are simple. I could care less if he's a black man doing something positive, I'll support him when he does something good. I will never support anything just becuase it's black that forces people to half-ass their work because they're guaranteed an audience.
And as for "lack of voice training," many of his actors have their very own albums, even if they miss a note or two, o well, his plays are about having fun. That's the very reason Tyler does not associate himself with the uptight "sophisticated" shows of Broadway and the National Black Theater Festival. As for those "starched theater-goers," they can just lighten up a bit and stop thinking that they're better than everyone else.
@swiftthirdday Thats a big part of the problem right there, maybe if that demographic you speak of within our community stop thinking that REAL education some how makes you shallow, we would be better off, and vise versa. i could walk down the east side of Chicago were im from, and find black people who are working clas people with a brain, but try to share something with them that they know nothing of, that could take them on a more enlighten route they shun it like the plaque, and start hatin
@davisismail1comcast Let me give you an examples of what Im talking about. I have been celebrating Kwanzaa for fifteen years. i was at an event as a craft vendor that host the biggest event around this seven days. A middle age brotha walks up to my booth and looks at some of my products. He strikes up a conversation that was mutual for a moment, and then he makes a snide comment, he says why do you celebrate this nonsense young man, his ignorance obviously proceeded him.
@davisismail1comcast To many of us older blk folks are stuck on stupid. We have lost the ability to go beyond the past we know. We don't embrace intellect or creative ideas that aren't the same old stupid shit we've been feed all our lives. Yes the white racist media has captured our brains, hearts and minds.
How are they not trained? Tyler selects his actors by seeing them in other plays. Whether or not they have "professional" training, they still have to be somewhat talented for Tyler to select them. Besides their training, he chooses his actors on good,Christian qualitys. He bases his plays around life experiences in order to teach lessons and help peoeple in REAL life. His messages are some of the best "pearls of wisdom" people can hear...
...my dearest. this is definitely not an argument or any attempt to belittle the efforts of Mr. Perry. When I spoke of training I meant Voice training. There is vocal training and then there is voice (speaking) training that actors should have. Yes many of his actors can sing, but when it comes to delivering a well developed character and executing wonderfully and diaphramatically controlled speaking, his plays go lacking.
I do understand that his audiences have fun, but at the same time I can't put his plays on the same level as August Wilson. This is the debate the carries when you have someone who holds theater as their life, craft, and education. I don't think there will ever be a mean of opinions for the peace of what we as black artists are doing! And do trust, his actors are not picked on Christian qualities...
Um this is Youtube. General public know nothing of what you speak nor do they care. August Wilson? Tyler's is Serious with a smile & true to life. August's "Joe Turners come and gone to me was" someone wrongly accused problems we face still. But it was true to life. Apples & oranges. Your right tho..if you're not a theatre buff and it's not your background how would one know? It's funny when people try to break things down because they know so much others may not. Who cares?
...let's remember that many of the male characters are shirtless and oiled DOWN in many scenes!!! Let's not assume that because they sing about the Lord that they are Godly people! Many of his shows are predictable and have the same type of music. They also aren't written well enough when it comes to the educated sense a playwright is concerned!
...audience members don't know these actors aren't trained. They're singers, but a lack of vocal training is very noticeable. Hamlin wasn't saying the people were ess than his audience. He said that they were not used to "real" theater. This term is "off" to me. Theater is a slice of life, but there is a particular way to tell the story. Some of Tyler's plays are like the "cooning" shows. Some starched theatergoers don't like this, but Hamlin could've expressed himself better!!!
As a professional theatre major in school I can understand where some of the people within the black theater festival are coming from. I however, do not condone the way in which they are voicing their opinions!!! Now the actors in Tyler's plays are not trained actors for the most part, but they do fit an audience. The bottom line of what Hamlin was saying is that the audiences are demographically, which is surveyed facts, not used to traditional theater. At times...
i am performer myself and at first i didn't get into madea until i sat down and watched. now i am a huge fan. his shows elevated gospel musicals to a new level. the scenery, props, music. you don't see dvds of pbs performances selling out in walmart or target. he got into a niche that spoke to people, not at them. . his humor may not be for everyone, but its definitely for someone. keep striving tyler, keep striving.
That's the problem, us black folks don't wanna support each other, and then we complain about how the man is keeping us down. And who does Theo think he is? He ain't doing jack with his life right now! Keep on going Tyler Perry!
Whoa! I didn't know Larry Leon Hamlin died two months ago. Like my mom always said this one thing. Actually, a few things - "you get what your hand is calling for" and "a hater's gonna hate".
WOW. I totally agree. I had known marvin for a long time and I am shocked to hear that he has such derogatory things to say about tyler perry. I love Tyler Perry's work. He always has such strong messages in his plays while being highly entertaining at the same time. Tyler's work is a breath of fresh air in my eyes. His plays have a very broad range from being intelligent to being really ghetto. I am very disapointed to hear such disparaging remarks from people who I have admired in the past.
Usually I don't respond 2 ignorance, unless it is totally offensive 2 others. Cheetah69, your comments have certainly fit that description. Personally, u owe millions of people an apology 4 considering them, the lesser class, "the lesser dominator" because they choose 2 support what satisfies their needs, and wants 4 as entertainment, or looking down upon those who are calling perry's plays a new horizon of black theater.
Who are U or anyone else 2 judge, what others have supported and loved for the past 15 years of Perry's Work? (LAUGHING)- Lord have mercy- They just don't get it, But those who do, they are enjoying every minute of the new face lift of black entertainment and theater
Wait!!!! Cheetah69, who might be this "lowest demonminator", in which TP caters 2? Certainly, not millions of wealthy, middle class, and average, black, latino, and now 48 percent of white americans who are very intelligent, hard working, and capable of knowing what they want in good entertainment? I know you Did not just insult millions of intelligent people which Perry work is geered toward?
By the way these are the same people that Traditional Black theater so called activists ( like larry, you and a few others)seem to ignore. 62 percent of the audience's interest, wants, needs, and demands was not being meet.
Now a REAL christain would know, he who wins souls are wise. In order 2 win a soul into the kingdom of God, u must first have to relate 2 them. In other words, u become 1 with your audiences: relating 2 Their issues, their stories, their day 2 day lives, their struggles, and their victories.
Perry Uses a medicine formula of laughter 2 help people cope with the very thing thats been affecting them or their families, getting solutions to dealing with LIFE twist and turns, allowing each character 2 be a mirror 2 your audience so they can look into and examine their own lives. Now thats theater!
There is more to black Theater than " we shall over come, yes sa, yes masa, the white man is after us " type of plays. Who is reaching and teaching todays generation with a creative in touch, relative style to capture the heart of our young people and the over looked deserving people who know what they want in entertainment? certainly not larry and Malcom Jamal Warner.
Perry's plays is what theater historians call black greek theater ( please read up on it) STOP being religious and jeaolous. You can never wins souls being a hater. Now your opinion is one thing, but calling millions of people 'lower denominators" is not only ignorant, but shows your lack of knowledge in theater history as well and not mention yur biblical history as well. Grow up! because Urban- Christian theater is here to stay!!!!
Every black person doesn't want to go to a theatre ,sit and watch plays reminding us of how hard times were, and the continuous black struggles, sometimes we want to laugh and enjoy ourselves,I lost respect for malcolm jamal warner he and the rest of the cosby kids get on my last nerve. I understand they may have a problem with the whole big black woman issue, it's understandable but what can I say, tyler's plays are tasteful.
why not have more diversity? Why not have two festival? Blacks are a diverse people and we don't all like the same things. It's just proof that the race has evolved.
sounds jealous [maybe he has to make such statements for he has no talents]. it's funny that malcolm jamal warner puts down tyler perry when bill cosby would be supportive of tyler perry and without mr cosby malcolm would be a nobody
to dodge96neon: Your comments are on point. Exactly. I meet Malcolm Jamal Warner, and please don't believe the hype. Sad to say he has a strong spirit of pride and arrogance. I am more impressed with people of noble character and humility, than brothers who walk around and caress their ego.
Substance and conscious is what I keep hearing. Tyler's work has been innovative, funny, edgy, and has always had a conscious. For those who say his work is shallow and are stereotypes gone awry then they might need to look at Daddy's Little Girls. The movie was more serious than funny and showed a strong father figure put in a hard situation. You can hate if you want to, but at the end of the day I know you are watching his movies and plays and other's like it.
Though some of Perry's work might be funny, it is neither innovative, edgy or conscious. It caters to the lowest denominator and it's a tap dance and shuck n' jive away from a minstrel. It' probably the most cliched, banal, trite garbage out today that actually tries to pass itself off as black theater. God Bless HIM, though.
I think you are missing the point. It's supposed to be entertainment (that christians can watch too). Not a blueprint for us blacks to live our lives by. What christian entertainment do think is up to your standards?
Am I missing the point, or have I simply called a spade a spade? And I don't see how it's considered "christian entertainment" when every single one of them have at least one topless, chiseled black dude in it. If the market or name it is given is "christian entertainment," then it shouldn't even be in a discussion about theater period.
You're making the point that this is good Christian entertainment. Fine. But call it that. His stuff is no more theater than the Christmas and Easter plays I did 10 years ago as a child at my childhood place of worship. Of course my Resurrection day program didn't have any dredlocked nubian coming out of the shower in a tight-fitted towel, draped so in order to give just a tiny hint of butt cheek.
Still waiting for your suggestions of entertainment. We all can critisize. What so called christian entertainment do you recommend. Part II I just to know what do you recommend.
there are a ton of christian or gospel concerts. besides what's the point of listing good alternatives for christian entertainment. Tyler's work sucks as theater. That's my point. What Christians can do to be entertained and still feel that they're following the word is not my concern or even the intent of this post.
I personally think there a place for traditional and Tyler Perry. I think this just shows that every time someone get ahead here comes a hater to their to bring them down. What about when Tyler Perry's plays weren't popular did he turn around and hate on Larry no. What Larry should have done was say good Tyler and left it as that. All kinds of people like different music, plays, cars and etc.. So i don't really see why he even said anything in the first place period.
That "ignorant fool" single handedly created the largest african/african american theater festival in the world. Let's choose our words carefully... he didn't call any names in the clip, afterall.
And for the record, Larry Leon Hamlin died earlier this month.
People like the ignorant fool dissing Tyler are just hatin. That's only going to make people go more. Oh by they way what plays and ur movies, and sitcoms has his made.....that's what I thought!!!
I will end by saying I'm dissapointed in the neggative views portrayed in the video and comentary previous to mine. You won't Grow if you continually tear Down!
I love Traditional Theatre but also can appreciate Tyler's Productions. We must learn from each other and not negatively try to promote one over the other. I think there is room for improvement in Tyler Perry's productions but there is also a NEED for improvement in the attitude of those Traditionalist. They Should recognise Tyler Perry's work for what it is and what it does....
Well, I hear your comments but then you then need to address why Tyler Perry type Plays are so in demand and the Traditional are not attracting so much of an Audience. To put down the interlect of someone going to a Theatre Production is very poor cooming from some one who is ment to be intellectual. Surely by Putting down the people you wish to attract will no doubt push them away?
[continued from below]...messages & meaningless songs. (Yes, I know I will get bashed for that, but it's all good.) While Tyler's "simple" comedy may've been necessary to establish & captivate his audience, my prayer is that Perry will step up his game. He has an endless stream of capital, doesn't need Hollywood's approval & most importantly, he has people's rapt attention! Use all this to tell some OTHER sides of our Black stories! Raise the characters and scripts to a higher level.[END]
[continued from below]...'stand alone.' As much as I respect the man, I dunno, I see his plays as base-level humor that appeals to people's lowest common denominator. Just because one is making millions and has a huge following does not define their work as quality and/or authoritative. I mean, c'mon, hip-hop artists are also making millions and going platinum saying nothing more than "snap yo fangahs," "shake that laffy taffy," "dis is why i'm hot" and all kinds of other empty...
[continued below]...-having and boisterous, argumentative people. And let's face it, these are largely the qualities - and messages - that Perry's plays/characters propagate. And the constant "borrowing" or humor lines from other movies and sends yet another loud-and-clear message. Occasional references to other works is one thing, but to lean so heavily on those one-liners lifted from other works, I believe, takes away from the credibility of his own original scripts and their ability to...
[continued from below]...one's reaching for a gun every time someone frustrates you???? C'mon y'all. Hamlin, Warner and the others' concerns are much like my own...that what is portrayed in Perry's plays and movies not become the "stamp" of reality for Black theatre in a bigger world of performing arts. No more than you want the world watching BET videos and labeling all of Black America as money-hungry sexual deviants do you want the world to see us as a gun-wielding, trigger-happy, attitude...
[continued from below]...guys should try to understand what the folks at this festival are driving at. I really don't believe they were launching an intentional assault on Tyler. Moreso, I believe they were protecting and promoting quality in Black performing arts. I've read so many of your comments about Perry finding a way to talk about God, about conveying important messges and creating necessary dialogue among Black family members. So true. Indeed, I feel you. But does God promote...
[continued from below]...and characters that I can't and probably never will find very comical. At the end of the day though, I have an ENORMOUS level of respect for Tyler. This is a man who came from a history of desperation and homelessness, and he used what he had and what he could to build his own empire. Whether or not I endorse his every script is pointless. He's created a 'product' that works for him, and found a huge audience base doing so. But on the flip side of that, you...
[continued from below]...like the next person. Do I think it's the best in theatre show quality? No. Do I let that stop me from TRYING to understand and appreciate T. Perry's brand of humor? No. While I can't relate personally to everything that goes on in his plays and movies, I know that what's being portrayed is certainly a reality in our society, and usually somewhere in all of our families. Some of his stuff had to grow on me, and yet there are still certain pieces of his scripts...
[continued from below]...plays no longer sell seats. That's HOGWASH! Secondly, while I understand the point Hamlin makes, it should also be noted that the audience members of "traditional" theatre and "urban" theatre are often the SAME PEOPLE. Folks like variety, and that's a good thing. As an actress and graduate of theatre studies, I favor traditional theatre that offers a stronger storytelling and plot-based ingredients. But! I've looked and laughed at Tyler Perry's material just...
[continued from below]...have in a 'less than Black' region, but the point remains the same. Another case in point: Cheryl West's play "Rejoice," directed by Kenny Leon last year in Atlanta sold out night after night after night!!! This was yet another traditional play/musical. And this happens with many other theatre houses and theatre companies around the country. Can someone say "The Color Purple?" You see where I'm goin? So let's first get rid of the notion that traditional...
1 major black theatre company. I have yet to be able to get a ticket to any of their shows!!!! Why? Because, these well-produced, well-cast TRADITIONAL plays sell out for the entire run EVERY time they perform. I've missed the boat on every attempt to get tickets. Unless you jump on the tickets when they're first come available, you're guraranteed to find yourself on the waiting list. Now, in all fairness, that's partly due to the supply and demand advantage they...(comment continues)
Ok, ok folks...let's not claw each other's eyes out here. There's a point to be seen from both sides. FIRST of all, let's make it clear that the image painted by the reporter of today's (traditional) play attendance was grossly exaggerated. GROSSLY! An empty house? Whatever! I've been to MANY, MANY traditional-style plays in various cities over the past few years and many of their shows continue to sell out. I currently live in Denver, CO. At present, there's only...(comment continues)
wat in tha world!!!! tyler perry is a monster (in tha good way) whn it comes to stage plays..i mean his work has some kind of message in it ranging from family problems to relationship and other issues...i've watched all of his plays and they've made me sometimes wonder y things are the way the are...TYLER PERRY IS THE FUTURE OF STAGE PLAYS...plus he NOW has his own tv show..he's doin it big...
Tragically Larry died, but I don't have issue with Tyler Perry, I don't really get into his humor but I think he's attempting to inspire dialogues for black families so they can discuss issues that otherwise get swept under the rug and for that I applaud him, because it's something we desperately need.
whoever thinks that there's a problem with tyler perry. You are freakin insane. Do you even listen to the things he says in his plays? Grow the hell up and get out of the past. uuugh! I can't even make a decent statement because I'm so angry.
Tyler Perry is genious. He is absolutley amazing. I don't know any black person who hasn't seen his plays and movies, nor have i heard of any white, mexican, or puerto rican polka dotted people who don't love his shows.
African Americans can never congratulate one another. We are so angry about what whites supposedly do to us, & then when one of us becomes successful we are angry. Tyler perry is not being vulgar & he is not saying or doing anything that is inappropriate Tyler Perry is unique The same people that changed the face of theater in the first place are the same ones who are angry with somebody who is being original. If you are angry with Tyler Perry, then just dont' watch his plays. its that simple
How is this beligerant man going to talk about the black stereotypes Tyler Perry acts out in his plays, when he is being televised wearing shades, has a perm and wearing a purple suit, and as far as i know it takes a man with much intellegience to write plays that the while family could watch, with comedy as well as education.
first of all why are you hating on tyler perry the man is a genius he brings out the ghetto and still has time for church. So stop hating and start appreciating. If you don't like tyler perry stop buying his dvd's and stop watching him on tv as for me I'm still gonna buy his dvd's and watch his shows and movies cause my grandma acts like madea bitches stop hating and do something.
Black people always find a way to bring other black people down. Tyler is doing his thing and we ALL know someone like Madea. May be in our family, maybe not. But stop the hating. I support Tyler and have seen every single play he made. He got a TV series premiering on TBS tonight at 9 and I WILL be watching it. Keep doing your thing Tyler/Madea! You are like a breath of fresh air to us! SHUTUP THEO HUXTABLE!!!!!!! That is all her ever was and all he will ever be.

Tyler has his own studio, own t.v. shows, and more MONEY then all these people dissing him. I'm sure Tyler is not losing sleep because he's not being invited to a play festival.

@Lashid4u Steven Spielberg was payed nothing to make "Schindler's List" I have a strong feeling that Tyler Perry would never make a movie for free no matter how noble the cause. He's a mogul with an empire to run. I repeat though Thank God for Tyler Perry.
Mario54World 1 year ago
@Mario54World You clearly havent seen how much steven spielberg is worth? Hes a billionaire, he could buy tyler perry! Whats one free film to him! Thats not a rational comparison at all!
Nwokoj 1 year ago
@Lashid4u It's not always the most complex writing but it is what it is, and his work is always for the collaboration process to take place with actors. Great actors make his work shine. He doesn't show his genius in his writing. Actors bring great stuff out of his work. I repeat. Thank God for Tyler Perry. If you reread my comments, you'll see that I'm not dissing Tyler Perry. He's doing what every director in the world is trying to do. He's great, but not as noble as some think.
Mario54World 1 year ago

Mario54World 1 year ago
@Lashid4u I think you misread my comments. I'm a supoporter of Tyler Perry. You can't pretend like the man doesn't know how to make money though. He doesn't hire writers in the Writers Guild Association. The WGA had a big hit and strike last year and Tyler Perry isn't making it any easier for the, IOt's a disservice to everyone really that he doesn't hire writers in the WGA and has his own unique team. I'm not saying he should change writers, but his writers could easily enter into the WGA,
Mario54World 1 year ago
His films and characters are coonish and stupid. He uses black woman and the church to get were he is and now he is trapped playing a pre-op transsexual for the rest of his career on screen . He has the money now ,so he needs to come out the closet and at least try to make something good at his movie studios. Make a movie about a courageous black man. he hates black men like the rest of Hollywood .Other races laugh at us for even supporting his shows and movies.

BAMA ASS BLACK FOLKS
MrMandingus 1 year ago
@MrMandingus He does that to make money. The man knows how to make money. He shot "Diary of a Mad Black Woman at his mansion" and saved on thousands of production costs and he does things like that often. And he (which kind annoys me) doesn't hire writers in the Writers Guild Association, so he saves on paying the WGA flat rate but he takes GREAT care of ppl that stick w/ him. I think he does things he has to to make money and finance projects he really cares about.
Mario54World 1 year ago
@Mario54World Please. He took a risk in making these movies on black women, because black actresses have been told that "no one wants to see a black woman on screen", and sistas have been called "box office poison". But that's how passionate he is about the black woman, and the black family (if you saw his plays and TRULY examined his movies, you'd see that he is VERY MUCH for black men, as well - Why Did I, was, more critical of the bw) and Madea represents the Big Mama who is no longer

Its ok to promote traditonal Black theater, but why is it necessary to admonish "urban" theater to accomplish this.
tincredible 1 year ago
Why can't two distinct genres of Black theater be appreciated for what they are. Its ok to have a preference, but why do we as Black people feel the need to compete with each other and tear one another down. You never see Tom Cruise making disparaging remarks about Brad Pitt. They both have their own fanbase and their goal is to entertain that fanbase instead of obsess over what the next actor is doing. Does all Black theater have to conform to one standard? Who died and made ANYBODY king?
tincredible 1 year ago
@tincredible WORD. But that's how negroes do, because we've been trained to tear each other down. Tyler is not the problem. Good Times was not the problem. The problem is the industry not giving more exposure to other directors and film makers - that's not Tyler's fault. There should be room for Good Times as Well as the Cosby show ..Room for Spike Lee as well as Tyler Perry. We wont focus on the REAL enemy, as usual.
Lashid4u 1 year ago

AzHarris 1 year ago
If this is hard to understand i'll paint this picture.
A play/production showcasing black actors, writers, performers, POSITIVE and INTELLEGENT aspects of art will get next to NO crowd.
A tyler perry play showcasing the bare stereotype of the ugly of african americans, though religious and recycled plot will be -sold out-.
A fact that Black folk would rather laugh at themselves than actually see good in themselves is AMAZING.

And Thandie Newton (brilliant British actress) and Whoopi Goldberg and Phylicia Rashad and other greats too

and his plays are not selling SEX nor is it selling VIOLENCE to our community. it's merely telling a story that SOMEBODY can identify with, about some bodies CRAZY grandma that still wont get it right, or about someones cousin on drugs, or about the fact that some people are LIVING in mental and physical abusive relationships or HOMES !

I find his plays and the sining to be some of the best. If he was as some of you have posted he would not be worth millions. He pay his dues and he is now reaping the benefits!
I rahter look at his plays/movies than some of the ones that claim to be "professional"! What a laugh. :)
You go Tyler - we all think you're the BEST!!!

As for those "starched theater-goers," they can just lighten up a bit and stop thinking that they're better than everyone else.
swiftthirdday 4 years ago 6
@swiftthirdday Thats a big part of the problem right there, maybe if that demographic you speak of within our community stop thinking that REAL education some how makes you shallow, we would be better off, and vise versa. i could walk down the east side of Chicago were im from, and find black people who are working clas people with a brain, but try to share something with them that they know nothing of, that could take them on a more enlighten route they shun it like the plaque, and start hatin
davisismail1comcast 1 year ago

Screamingdk 10 months ago
How are they not trained? Tyler selects his actors by seeing them in other plays. Whether or not they have "professional" training, they still have to be somewhat talented for Tyler to select them. Besides their training, he chooses his actors on good,Christian qualitys. He bases his plays around life experiences in order to teach lessons and help peoeple in REAL life. His messages are some of the best "pearls of wisdom" people can hear...
swiftthirdday 4 years ago
...my dearest. this is definitely not an argument or any attempt to belittle the efforts of Mr. Perry. When I spoke of training I meant Voice training. There is vocal training and then there is voice (speaking) training that actors should have. Yes many of his actors can sing, but when it comes to delivering a well developed character and executing wonderfully and diaphramatically controlled speaking, his plays go lacking.
couturesixfour 4 years ago
I do understand that his audiences have fun, but at the same time I can't put his plays on the same level as August Wilson. This is the debate the carries when you have someone who holds theater as their life, craft, and education. I don't think there will ever be a mean of opinions for the peace of what we as black artists are doing! And do trust, his actors are not picked on Christian qualities...
couturesixfour 4 years ago
Um this is Youtube. General public know nothing of what you speak nor do they care. August Wilson? Tyler's is Serious with a smile & true to life. August's "Joe Turners come and gone to me was" someone wrongly accused problems we face still. But it was true to life. Apples & oranges. Your right tho..if you're not a theatre buff and it's not your background how would one know? It's funny when people try to break things down because they know so much others may not. Who cares?
LHoney547 4 years ago
...let's remember that many of the male characters are shirtless and oiled DOWN in many scenes!!! Let's not assume that because they sing about the Lord that they are Godly people! Many of his shows are predictable and have the same type of music. They also aren't written well enough when it comes to the educated sense a playwright is concerned!
couturesixfour 4 years ago
...audience members don't know these actors aren't trained. Some starched theatergoers don't like this, but Hamlin could've expressed himself better!!!
couturesixfour 4 years ago
As a professional theatre major in school I can understand where some of the people within the black theater festival are coming from. I however, do not condone the way in which they are voicing their opinions!!! Now the actors in Tyler's plays are not trained actors for the most part, but they do fit an audience. The bottom line of what Hamlin was saying is that the audiences are demographically, which is surveyed facts, not used to traditional theater. At times...

I am very disapointed to hear such disparaging remarks from people who I have admired in the past.
redbeard86 4 years ago
Usually I don't respond 2 ignorance, unless it is totally offensive 2 others. Cheetah69, your comments have certainly fit that description. Personally, u owe millions of people an apology 4 considering them, the lesser class, "the lesser dominator" because they choose 2 support what satisfies their needs, and wants 4 as entertainment, or looking down upon those who are calling perry's plays a new horizon of black theater.
IwasBorn2Win 4 years ago
Who are U or anyone else 2 judge, what others have supported and loved for the past 15 years of Perry's Work? (LAUGHING)- Lord have mercy- They just don't get it, But those who do, they are enjoying every minute of the new face lift of black entertainment and theater
IwasBorn2Win 4 years ago
IwasBorn2Win 4 years ago
By the way these are the same people that Traditional Black theater so called activists ( like larry, you and a few others)seem to ignore. 62 percent of the audience's interest, wants, needs, and demands was not being meet.

Now a REAL christain would know, he who wins souls are wise. In order 2 win a soul into the kingdom of God, u must first have to relate 2 them. In other words, u become 1 with your audiences: relating 2 Their issues, their stories, their day 2 day lives, their struggles, and their victories.
IwasBorn2Win 4 years ago
Perry Uses a medicine formula of laughter 2 help people cope with the very thing thats been affecting them or their families, getting solutions to dealing with LIFE twist and turns, allowing each character 2 be a mirror 2 your audience so they can look into and examine their own lives. Now thats theater!
IwasBorn2Win 4 years ago

EBDAN 4 years ago
Though some of Perry's work might be funny, it is neither innovative, edgy or conscious. It caters to the lowest denominator and it's a tap dance and shuck n' jive away from a minstrel. It' probably the most cliched, banal, trite garbage out today that actually tries to pass itself off as black theater. God Bless HIM, though.
CHEETAH69 4 years ago
I think you are missing the point. It's supposed to be entertainment (that christians can watch too). Not a blueprint for us blacks to live our lives by. What christian entertainment do think is up to your standards?
EBDAN 4 years ago
Am I missing the point, or have I simply called a spade a spade? And I don't see how it's considered "christian entertainment" when every single one of them have at least one topless, chiseled black dude in it. If the market or name it is given is "christian entertainment," then it shouldn't even be in a discussion about theater period.
CHEETAH69 4 years ago 4
Still waiting for your suggestions of entertainment. We all can critisize. What so called christian entertainment do you recommend.
EBDAN 4 years ago
You're making the point that this is good Christian entertainment. Fine. But call it that. His stuff is no more theater than the Christmas and Easter plays I did 10 years ago as a child at my childhood place of worship. Of course my Resurrection day program didn't have any dredlocked nubian coming out of the shower in a tight-fitted towel, draped so in order to give just a tiny hint of butt cheek.

there are a ton of christian or gospel concerts. besides what's the point of listing good alternatives for christian entertainment. Tyler's work sucks as theater. That's my point. What Christians can do to be entertained and still feel that they're following the word is not my concern or even the intent of this post.

I love Traditional Theatre but also can appreciate Tyler's Productions. We must learn from each other and not negatively try to promote one over the other. I think there is room for improvement in Tyler Perry's productions but there is also a NEED for improvement in the attitude of those Traditionalist. They Should recognise Tyler Perry's work for what it is and what it does....
jrreid 4 years ago
