An extremely high proportion of business expenses are now spent on marketing. The American dream is an illusion, and a very well maintained one that has a lot of money thrown at it.
Part of the problem with media is the sponsorship model. They are beholden to their advertisers and stockholders. So of course they're going to portray a world that is off, at a higher level than our own.
Look at burger ads. Do you ever get one like that?
