Fair skin is a traditional standard of beauty in many parts of the world. Often, those of upper class in past ages were not exposed to sunlight, as they didn't have to work in fields, thus, fair skin was associate with wealth, and since the wealth set the standards for beauty, pale skin was in. There's a reason a certain heroine was called Snow White
@idiotic1021 This Ad is NOT from india, the lady looks nothing like an indian, and I've seen this ad several times while I was in egypt it's originally in arabic.
Oh man...no offence intended, but she looks like a ghost and so do some of the other women in these ads.Actually some of them look like Middle Eastern goths, if there is such a thing...lol...hey each to his own, but surely not to get a job? That's discrimination right? Just sayin...
I think that people bleaching their skin because they like it lighter is fine, but bleaching their skin becaause of peer and media pressure is just not right, at all. People should be able to choose how they look, and not being influenced by people who put ideas on their mnds to make money. You are yourself, you don't need to belike this or like that to archieve something in life.
I'm from Thailand and they have an obsession with white skin there. I was born pale but got tanned from spending so much time in the sun. I only lived there for 6 years so i never really understood why my aunties wanted me to avoid the sun (don't play out to play outdoors too long, when i'm out take an umbrella with me etc.) now i know why. I admit that i've tried to lighten my skin. I'm not racist or anything, i just prefer to be light skinned. i'm visiting Thailand again soon too. Ugh...
All of you non-indian people need to realize something. The media has little to do with this. Traditionally, in India, there were castes, usually the higher castes had lighter skin, and the lower ones were darker. Thats not to say that the thinking was that lighter skinned people were better than darker skinned people. Fairer skin gave the appearance of not working in the fields, rich, wealthy. All of this made the girl more attractive. As you can see, the same idea goes on today.
This advert's set-up should be used for an ad for lawyers. And it should be about suing people who think 'she's too dark' is an appropriate reason for dismissing a job candidate - especially when it's their only reason.
Hmm... I can only the psychological effect this has on Indian teens and women who were born dark-skinned and without resources to buy the creme: being bombarded with the notion that white=beauty=success, and that without a certain skin tone; you cannot be neither successful and/nor beautiful.
I am south asian, but I have more of a darker brown complexion, I drool over east asian chalk white skin color... The japanese and korean celebs skin tone is what I desire.
Might one suggest that for "total fairness" skin tone might be disregarded as a factor when it comes to selecting a TV personality or date? Who will be the first tv producer hero that selects a great and dark-skinned reporter? Seems like there's an opportunity here!
Those Indians in particular purchasing the products are retarded. If you lighten your skin, change your hair to blonde and your eyes to blue you are no longer Indian you dumb asses! Way to Go!
If an Indian cannot be married to a White person nor have children by them as according to traditional customs then why in God's name would you want to look like them????????
@TezukaKohei My parents are Indian. It's a cultural thing. People generally consider big noses to be unattractive in North America. In India, your physical attractiveness is determined by your skin colour and skin colour alone. They can't help wanting to change themselves. It's no different from people getting nose jobs. I don't agree with it, but it's not the fault of the people. It's the fault of the culture.
@celerystalker19 the people establish the culture themselves. The younger generations born in America who live here should know better and realize that our distinct ethnic features is what makes us unique in this country. There is no point of the United States of America if there is no ethnic diversity. And as far as Indians who believe that their beauty is only in their skin color, I don't understand that. There are plenty of ugly white people so why should skin color make a difference?
Also I don't understand why a big nose is considered as unattractive. What the fuck is someone's nose supposed to look like? At the end of the day It's a fucking NOSE. You breath out of it. Does it work? Is it functioning properly? Yes? End of story.
@TezukaKohei I agree with you. Actually, most measures of "beauty" and "uglyness" are just random bullshit imo.
I've heard that the whole "light skin is attractive" thing came about when the British took over India, but I'm not positive. The whole thing is stupid anyways. Even in Canada, where I live, some of the Indian girls stand in the shade when we go outside for P.E. because they don't want to tan, and my mum is always telling me how lucky I am to have fair skin.
I completely disagree with the message of this commercial ... but In my case all my body skin is '' super light white ivory porcelain , whatever you call it lol '' and only my face is light-medium .. is it okay in this case to whitening your face ?
@XCutePupa of course it's okay to whiten your face. If someone feels they look better with lighter skin, or darker skin, all the power to them, choosing one doesn't make you a racist.
Well... I am fair skinned, and I actually DONT completely hate this commercial. I always hear "you're so white, go get a tan." It's nice to know there is a place on earth where being fair is still appreciated. I don't agree with it's "change your looks for success" message, but at least SOMEWHERE being tan doesnt mean being beautiful.
@aubreelynnnn I totally understand you. I'm naturally olive skinned but I don't like to see all of these girls struggling so hard to tan. Going to tanning booths can give these girls skin cancer and spray tans end up looking fake and unnatural. In the end,we should all just learn to love and accept our God-given skin tones and stop trying to change ourselves to make others like us better. Tanned skin is beautiful, yes. But so is pale skin.
@aubreelynnnn see.. the problem with this commercial is not that the girl simply wanted to look whiter for beauty reasons, but because her color was holding back her career! The message here is: success=white. And that, is without question VERY racist. The woman herself said in the commercial "the obstacle to obtain my dream job was my skin"; had she been born white (or "fair") she wouldn't be obstacled...
Kilee33 That even exist among some in the Hispanic community. I am presently looking for a bleaching agent so I can just stop getting nasty comments such as "Hispanic women does know what they want" and that from the whiter members of my own family.
God is the great wisdom; we are created by the great wisdom. So, everyone has a role in life. We are created by purpose because we all worth the same. So love yourself with how you are born.
That is so stupid! I went to an interview for preschool teacher. I am not very white, but I am not dark either! They were very nice to me! even told me : don't be nervious. your answers are good and so on....!! (The things that no employers tell anyone!!!) It's not true! My first language was not english either!! but they liked me! even told me about the working conditions!!!
This commercial not only degrades people with dark skin, I feel like it degrades all women. Its basically saying "Your skill or knowledge is irrelevant, beauty is all you need." It doesn't matter if skin lightening is like tanning. If the woman needed a tan to get the job it would've been just as offensive.
@yoshisuniverse That's not always true. I use this cream to even out my skin tone, not because I feel inferior... Every minute I walk out into the sun, I get like a shade darker. All I want to do is restore my skin to it's natural color.
@katris4040 :I agree with you there. Some of these products are beneficial ,as in ,it evens out your skin tone. But there are young girls that bleach their skin and the idea of white is superior is being drilled into their heads.
My solution is to remove the world fair or whitener from these products.
@yoshisuniverse oh boy where to begin... First, the original idea that light skin shows superiority comes from that the lighter the skin, the more indication that the person had no need to work and end up with darker tanned skin. So people's cultural understanding of what is beautiful.... well the sky's the limit i suppose. The difference you see, is that light skin is light. and dark skin is dark. How people react to these facts can be extremely superficial somethimes.
That's just as fucked-up as a white minstrel performing in blackface while eating fried chicken and watermelon. Beautiful women come in all different shades.
It's also further proof that Yoko Ono was right when she said that woman was the N-word of the world.
If some folks prefer lighter skin or whiter skin, then there is little we can do about it. I would not be shocked if the producers in these Asian countries were very dark, too, but it does not mean they prefer their chicks to have a white glow to their faces. Hell, that is normal. I have heard about it all of my life.
Everybody is born with the ability to look beautiful. Long hair/short hair, dark skin/light skin, tall/short, thick/thin. Its all about staying healthy and taking care of yourself! Don't give into the media and its nearly unachievable (for most people) standards! Accept yourself for who you are!
There was a time when thick people where considered the most beautiful, for thickness indicated wealth (more money = more food). These things change all of the time, so the best way to go is to stay you!
WHITE skin actually shows your signs of aging much more distinctly than dark skin! white skin isn't beautiful! YOU ARE! AND WHITE SKIN DOESN'T ACHIEVE YOUR EXISTING BEAUTY!
Oh please, you know they totally picked the whitest chick during the audition, and then added dark makeup to make her appear dark for the "pre-treatment" shots. This product, and other ones like it, are just messed up.
yes, apparently if you are not fairskinned, then you cannot find a husband or a good job....Preferring fair skin as in beauty may be a preference (although personally I think all colours are beautiful from chalkwhite to pitchblack), but sending out a message that without light skin you cannot find love or a job....only in ignorant India...
What was so "dark" about her complexion to begin with...? lol
Nothing would be wrong if they advertised this product merely for personal recreational uses (just like tanning cream)...but to suggest that one would otherwise hold an inferior social rank without it is offensive.
It's a little sad too cause the producers are taking advantage of prejudices in their own society to make a profit.
@wendy1851 yeah but you don't go back from getting skin cancer- do you? What I mean is people are never happy with what they have because cosmetic companies can't make any money if the media tells us we're beautiful. It's in their best interest to keep us feeling ugly or not-quite-right so they can sell us ways to 'fix it'. In countries where people have light skin, they sell us tanning, in countries where people have dark skin, they sell us bleaching. Simple as money.
Isn't this just the polar opposite of tanning cream? I know not getting the job was bad, but I'm sure plenty of women have been turned away from reporting jobs for not being tan here in the US. They deffinately should have taken a different approach to advertise this, but there really isn't anything wrong with the product in and of itself.
This commercial degrades all people with dark skin and shows that in many regions of the world the skin colour or generally the outer appearance are still more important than the abilities and talents a person has to offer. This woman has certainly not become a better reporter just because of her having whitened her skin. She has been reduced to only one trait of hers, her skill was completely overlooked. It's just sad.
@Kalliopurania I don't think this commercial is trying to say the white race is superior. It is not. After all, God is no respector of persons. It's just that many ( not all) of the darker skinned races think they look good being at their lightest. They are not trying to be white like Northern Europeans.
@Isabel1956 Hm, read my comment again, please. You've obviously misunderstood me. I don't think that this commercial is trying to convey some kind of superiority of the "white race". That wasn't my point at all. I said that it's a deplorable fact that appearance is considered more important than talent. And I think the woman was attractive "even" before she used this blasted cream. I'm angry that dark skin is "inferior" for many. It may be normal, but it's sad nevertheless, don't you think?
@Kalliopurania Okay I get it now. Skin color has nothing to do with intelligence. Unfortunately many people are ignorant about it but that's their problem.
@Isabel1956 Unfortunately it doesn't always stay their problem. They discriminate against all those who don't fit their picture of a worthy being. They refuse to give them jobs just because they are too dark in their opinion, or too obviously Asian or whatever nonsense they believe to be appropriate criteria to classify persons as either "good enough" or "undeserving". It's horrible shit, and this commercial demonstrates this madness perfectly.
@Kalliopurania I know. It's not right to deny anyone a job just because of physical appearance but unfortunately that's how it is sometimes. I sometimes felt treated like second best because of my darker complexion.
@Isabel1956, it is how it goes, and we cannot spend our lives trying to sue everyone because of it, either. This is why it helps if people work with their own people. Diversity is NOT always possible.
Don't forget that a reporter still needs to look attractive to the camera. I wonder how much Scarlet Lake would enjoy being only viewed for her looks or only viewed for her skill. (and I don't mean her skill as an assassin)
WOW, what a stupid ad, like do you guys think we idiots sitting watching these ads! beauty doesnt count, if you work hard, you get your prize- only in this case it doesnt! cause i know that people judge on skills of a person doing the job.. the girl freaken comes "FAIR", says some words, and thats it.. she did an AWESOME JOB.... wow! wat does fairness have to do with this!!!!!
whoa she is like already light what is she trying to be , an albino??? and anyways if she uses this cream her ass will not be in the sun doing reports from egypt because the sun will burn that cream right off her face
@BlauwLove yes if ur skin is naturally fair and damaged by the sun or acne scars or ether its tanned and same thing this product just fucking reduces the amount of damage ur skin has went thru aint turning u white when ur black O_o grow up and stop making everything sound racist
if you guys think the fact they use products to be fairer is racist and stupid, then stop using tanning products and abusing of UV ( which cause cancer and orange complexion ) :D
@thediabetesclub, that is a good question. It is just easier to be white or not too dark. I cannot blame anyone for preferring to be white. It is anyone's right to make such a choice, pure and simple.
You guys r lame -_- they mean skin imperfection you bozoze .. Who would want to get a TV job looking bad its not racist -_- fuck tards u really all need to grow some feathers and poop up a tree branch -_-
@Angle66Essence So lightening your hair and skin three shades is skin imperfection? She didn't have ANY blemishes and she said her skin was holding her back.
this isnt racist. this is what asian countries want. i'm indian and beauty is perceived as being really fair within my race.. its CULTURE not racism.. even though it is unacceptable according to todays standards.. even without fair and lovely indians and asians collectively have many diff herbal mixtures to make one's skin fair.for a woman in india it would be a matter of being married or single for the rest of her life. (BTW fair and lovely is extremely popular in India)
White folks are dying off at a rate of 95% a year...from skin cancers...so....Y THE FUCK would any1 wana have white skin....smh @ this psychopathic RACISIM
@ilieklolcatz uhh finally somebody saying that what i believe exactly is the same if tanning is ethical..then whitening is ethical why double standards....
@ilieklolcatz whitening your skin itself is not racist, maybe just a preference i agree but this advert implies that having whiter skin is crucial in success in life such as getting a job - that's racism, surely?
wow. this is horrible. =/ and this is created by dove btw. it shows how they really don't give a fuck about you since they're doing the 'self esteem' fund in north america and the UK but selling this crap to make you insecure about your skin color to egypt.
@xSwanSirenSong correction not dove.. although dove and fair and lovely are under the same group UNILEVER... they do have different marketing teams and are good as being known as 2 separate companies.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is SHOCKING BUT NOT SHOCKING!!! Jesus OMG!!!! This is blatant RACISM! HOW COULD 1 GROUP OF PEOPLE DECEIVE THE WORLD INTO BELIEVING THAT 1 SHADELESS HUE IS THE PATH TO A PERFECT LIFE?!?! THIS GROUP IS SO SMALL AND HAS DECEIVED MILLIONS (THE LIVING AND THE DEAD) OMG THIS IS MADNESS AT IT'S LOWEST FORM.
@JourniHeart23, why is it racism? Being white or looking white is anyone's choice. It does not mean the person who wants the product is self-hating or dislikes other non-white people.
Why are so many folks assuming this is racist? What is so wrong with wanting to have white skin? People said "black is beautiful" in the 60s, 70s, and beyond, but should we assume THEY were being racist toward non-blacks, especially whites? I see nothing wrong with having a preference, and if it is white, then so be it.
Sorry, people, the world is not color blind, but that does not automatically mean racism is the issue. Others often speak of diversity only when it is convenient for them.
Here's my issue, her skin is not acceptable, but his skin is??? Wow.

It's also further proof that Yoko Ono was right when she said that woman was the N-word of the world.
AirCooledMan2006 8 months ago
Ironicly, its ok to get a tan. These days i don't know what to believe anymore.
DisfunctionalMisfunc 8 months ago

GTRoyalty 8 months ago
Oh please, you know they totally picked the whitest chick during the audition, and then added dark makeup to make her appear dark for the "pre-treatment" shots. This product, and other ones like it, are just messed up.
sugabonbon16 8 months ago 4
yes, apparently if you are not fairskinned, then you cannot find a husband or a good job....Preferring fair skin as in beauty may be a preference (although personally I think all colours are beautiful from chalkwhite to pitchblack), but sending out a message that without light skin you cannot find love or a job....only in ignorant India...

Simple as money.

skin cream that turns mexicans into white people, gotta get me some of that
DJDemiser 9 months ago 3

Kalliopurania 10 months ago 88
@Kalliopurania I don't think this commercial is trying to say the white race is superior. It is not. After all, God is no respector of persons. It's just that many ( not all) of the darker skinned races think they look good being at their lightest. They are not trying to be white like Northern Europeans.
Isabel1956 8 months ago
@Isabel1956 Hm, read my comment again, please. You've obviously misunderstood me. I don't think that this commercial is trying to convey some kind of superiority of the "white race". That wasn't my point at all. I said that it's a deplorable fact that appearance is considered more important than talent. And I think the woman was attractive "even" before she used this blasted cream. I'm angry that dark skin is "inferior" for many. It may be normal, but it's sad nevertheless, don't you think?
Kalliopurania 8 months ago 2
@Kalliopurania Oh, the last part was directed at hentaiseeker, -interesting name, by the way ;-)
Kalliopurania 8 months ago
@Kalliopurania Okay I get it now. Skin color has nothing to do with intelligence. Unfortunately many people are ignorant about it but that's their problem.
Isabel1956 8 months ago
@Isabel1956 Unfortunately it doesn't always stay their problem. They discriminate against all those who don't fit their picture of a worthy being. They refuse to give them jobs just because they are too dark in their opinion, or too obviously Asian or whatever nonsense they believe to be appropriate criteria to classify persons as either "good enough" or "undeserving". It's horrible shit, and this commercial demonstrates this madness perfectly.
Kalliopurania 8 months ago
@Kalliopurania I know. It's not right to deny anyone a job just because of physical appearance but unfortunately that's how it is sometimes. I sometimes felt treated like second best because of my darker complexion.
Isabel1956 8 months ago
@Isabel1956, it is how it goes, and we cannot spend our lives trying to sue everyone because of it, either. This is why it helps if people work with their own people. Diversity is NOT always possible.

In India is it not true that "darker" complexion is considered to be a trait of the lower castes? I can see why this is popular.
thediabetesclub 11 months ago
@thediabetesclub, that is a good question. It is just easier to be white or not too dark. I cannot blame anyone for preferring to be white. It is anyone's right to make such a choice, pure and simple.

@Angle66Essence So lightening your hair and skin three shades is skin imperfection? She didn't have ANY blemishes and she said her skin was holding her back.
BlauwLove 11 months ago
this isnt racist. this is what asian countries want. i'm indian and beauty is perceived as being really fair within my race.. its CULTURE not racism.. even though it is unacceptable according to todays standards.. even without fair and lovely indians and asians collectively have many diff herbal mixtures to make one's skin fair.for a woman in india it would be a matter of being married or single for the rest of her life. (BTW fair and lovely is extremely popular in India)

THIS GROUP IS SO SMALL AND HAS DECEIVED MILLIONS (THE LIVING AND THE DEAD) OMG THIS IS MADNESS AT IT'S LOWEST FORM.
JourniHeart23 1 year ago
@JourniHeart23, why is it racism? Being white or looking white is anyone's choice. It does not mean the person who wants the product is self-hating or dislikes other non-white people.
sandinyourshoes 1 year ago
Why are so many folks assuming this is racist? What is so wrong with wanting to have white skin? People said "black is beautiful" in the 60s, 70s, and beyond, but should we assume THEY were being racist toward non-blacks, especially whites? I see nothing wrong with having a preference, and if it is white, then so be it.
Sorry, people, the world is not color blind, but that does not automatically mean racism is the issue. Others often speak of diversity only when it is convenient for them.
