@digger23d as schools are publicly funded... in other words.. if you want to practice witchcraft, cast curses or say prayers to god(s) or spirits... do it on your own private facilities (there is a tax break for that kind of behavior)
I think it is ok to pray if you mention the word "god" instead of the word "jesus" that way muslims and christians wont have to argue about who is violating whose religion. They share the same god.
@gadslca they share the same belief in a supernatural "something or other" that much is true... (bearded guy, amorphic cloud?.. whatever)... and what about those who don't believe in any cosmic over lord?
When thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Why can't people realize Jesus promotes prayer in SECRET? Not out in the open/public.
@kazoorocketman54 jesus promotes and saves!! busy at business this jesus dude.. (by the by... why did you break into pseudo "king james style" english????) what every for? (does your god talk that way?)
School is a place of budding knowledge. Prayer and other forms of ignorance have no place there. Just the same, the school's response was over the top.
I'm an atheist and I would absolutely defend the right of any Christian (or Muslim, Jew, etc.) who wanted to pray privately or in small groups on school grounds during their free time, as long as they were not proselytizing or being shown preference by the school's administration. I think anyone who supports a secular America should hold the same view.
I hate religion as much as any other atheist, but that principal has no right to tell someone they can't pray. Praying, at least praying out loud, is just talking, and you can't control what people say, that's denying them freedom of speech.
people should be allowed to pray in schools but not MANDATED by the school for everyone to pray, thats when they are infringing on people's constitutional rights. After school religious clubs and groups are ok because they are not forcing anyone to join
Kids can and should be able to pray in school privately as long as it's not when they are supposed to be studying. School administration has no right to lead, promote or endorse any prayer for any religion. They must remain secular. Religious faith is a private matter not a public one. This way everyones rights are protected.
@socksumi Not true, One faith is never a private matter. In most cases it is part of who and why they are. It is something you cannot and should not be forced to leave when you enter the public domain. The public arena is excactly the place you want freedom OF religion and OF speech for that matter. Next thing you know there won't be any prayer in foxholes cause the enemy is offended. geeze. FREEDOM!!!!!!!.......signed, willy wallace
As long as the school administration itself is not participating or running the religious practices there, it is okay. As soon as the school steps in and starts inviting kids to pray, they are breaking the law. A few kids wanting to pray during lunch doesn't hurt anyone.
However, I don't see why these kids can't pray silently or whisper their prayers. What's the matter? Can God not hear you unless you announce it to everyone? Apparently God doesn't have good ears.
By attempting to make 'prayer' into such a public display, these Christians are merely attempting to 'flaunt it' and give themselves a sense of righteousness and superiority. I'm not a theologian, but doesn't the bible ask(sorry, the bible never asks, it only demands) that prayer be in silence?
Of course kids should be allowed to pray in school. Pray for no pop-quizzes, or an A+ on a project or just pray for recess! Making your prayer obvious also allows atheist children to know who to make fun of! Religion needs to be made fun of more often! Not for all the good things that have been done; charity, social, community work. But for all the absurdities and atrocities; Creationism, virgin births, inquisitions, witch burnings, faith healing, misogyny, suicide bombers etc,etc,etc...
i think prayer in school should be allowed, but the manner in which this happens should be reviewed! it would be best, in my eyes, to make available several rooms were religious ... processes (for lack of a better word) can be freely practised. a teacher could review those present by entering at some point as agreed with the students, as to prohibit malpractise.
this way, other students (I.E. those who don't which to partake) are not bothered.
people can pray anytime they want. How would anybody even know you are praying! How silly. But just to let you know, I will not be "bowing" my head or stop talking while you are doing it. It is your own thing!
josephdupont, that's such a good point. Unfortunately, I feel like the only reason that I government flaunts those activities is because the vast majority of Americans WANT to see that. Sigh ... when did secularism die ... I'd like to know ...
to me there is no right and wrong in this case, prayer i think is a personal thing (at least limited to a certain religion) i think every and all groups should be able to pray at school and they should be given appropriate space (empty classroom, meeting room, etc.) to conduct their own thing
groups should be able to this in private, not bothering other (none) religious people
I'd say that the principal has misinterpreted the district's policy. It was apparently intended to just prohibit school-led prayer groups or religious activities. Principals have a way of turning things into "zero tolerance" policies.
I thought you could pray with a religious group but it has to be before or after school...

Because God can't hear you if you pray to yourself, or alone.

it all matters, if they booked the room to pray, then the school is in the right, but if its simply in their own space and time, then its ok.

We are given the freedom of religion as well as freedom from religion.
We should be allowed to pray when necessary.
In fact , we are allowed to pray in school.
A school that does not allow it is denying the freedoms of religious people.
alexross8 3 years ago 2
Its a multicultural place, pray in your own time at your house, if you don't like the particular school's rules, leave. Find a new one.
