Stray Cat's not rockabilly or rock and roll? LOL. I'm a rock and roll guy. Grew up with Elvis then other rockabilly and 50's rock and roll then 60's with Motown, Beatles and the Stones, then classic rock. As I got going with with this music I discovered the roots more. The first time I really heard the blues I realized too my ears it was slowed down rock and roll. Deep down in my soul I'm blues and rockabilly. I still slick my hair back, wear blue suede shoes and own a 57 chevy.
@funkstagazza I remember those old boys they were real fans of the sounds at the time, the oldest one died real early on but the other one carried on for years his nickname was ol man Isaac, because that is where we first met him a pub called the issac newton in brimsdown enfield they used to have an outbuilding at the side and played rock n roll one of the nights and the dj was an old ted called tarby, many moons ago lol
20th Century Box was shown on a Sunday - London Weekend Television is the clue! All those 'Cats' were purists so any modern bands were frowned upon unless very authentic so neo-rockabilly was out.
Do you remember it? Yet the neo-rockabilly bands are now being hailed as Classics by a new generation. Like The Polecats. My favourite was The Shillelagh Sisters and their rockabilly version of "These Boots Are Made For Walking". (Available from Raucous Records)
Brings back a lot of memories about the animosity that the Freds felt about the non-orthodox styles. Being a Psychobilly back then could be hazardous to your health. However, we all get fat and old in the end.
Never seen this before (I wasn't raised in London), & I only watched it because I thought the thumbnail pic of dear old Sunglasses Ron was Billy Hancock. Excellent. 1981 - couldn't have picked a better year. From then on, there was an ever-increasing ratio of off-the-peg trendy cunts among the ranks of so-called rockabillies. Absolute Beginners.
Love the live snippets of The Blue Cats & The Shakin' Pyramids.
Jiver is That's Right by The Five Keys very popular at the time as a new re-issue album was released. I think the DJ Fifties Flash was involved in that release. You can download tracks from itunes.
Memories, memories, the last band sing a very good cover of Sonny Fisher "pink and black", I played this song in the same time with my first rockabilly band in 1985.
i used to be into this music at that time!! I had all the old records and new about everything. I then became older and realized that i like all sorts of music, i just dont care anymore i just live my life and hlisten to everything.
Wow, when you think about it more time has passed between this Rock-A-Billy resurgence and today than between the original Rock-A-Billy of the 50's and when this documentary was made.
