After all these years I'm still astounded that so much talent could find it's way into one band, and that they could work together to make such great music. These guys had it all.
DAMN how I miss Terry Kath! He was one of the very best, no contest. He was the absolute soul of Chicago, and sadly, they never were the same after his tragic death. Too bad so few know of Terry today. Still, to true musicians, he'll always be remembered. (And DocRossow is right - Danny Seraphine is VERY underrated.) Thanks for a great post.
Thank you for posting! When I heard this song for the first time I knew that I was hearing something special, and that my musical tastes would be forever changed. "Introduction" is one of the greatest "sideone-song one" recordings ever. It enthusiastically told everyone what these guys were all about. And the highlights for me are the drumming of Daniel Seraphine, one of the most underrated rock drummers of all time.
@ 1:30 PC is looking very Chewbacca-esque in this vid, especially in side profile. Good thing he never sounded anything like Chewwy.
@ 5:19 I enjoyed the text scroll -- looks like substitutions for expletives. I have no expletives to add to what is already on the vid. This is a great vid !
I'm glad the VHS tape held out long enough to be able to get this on our YourTube. Waay ta go, drhey19
@StradMan37 Lee Loughnanes horn brought me to play the horn for many many years .... This band had more talent in it than in any of the top 20 of todays bands combined.
Chicago at their very best. The early 70's were such good times...wish I could go back :) Thanks to Suzy for passing this one along to me, and Danny for posting!!
My friend:Terry Kath was never in any accidental suicide; it was pure accident back in 1978. I am also a fan of Danny the drummer, but I would say Danny's drumming standard is dropping nowadays even though he'd managed to retain the Band's old name CTA! Allen Chenn-Hong Kong
The band resumed,in 1993, performing this song written by Terry Kath. They were reluctant to do the song after Kath's 1978 accidental suicide. Even original Chicago drummer Danny Seraphine's current band,California Transit Authority does this live and opens with this one. Seraphine rules! Tris Imboden(Chicago's current drummer) blows!
Thanks for posting, this is my favorite cut off CTA, saw them in Grant Park in 70, saw them last Friday with EWF. They are still great, but this song set them off. U made me smile, Big Time. lots of love
@AffordableTeezCom Jimi made that comment after seeing them at the Wiskey a go go in LA..........
In addition to being blow away by the band and Kath's guitar playing he was the one who pushed to get the band signed to a major record label at that time.
I saw the Hitman show about a week ago. Peter was good, but his voice sounded a bit scratchy. I guess after singing for as long as he has, his vocal cords just aren't the same. He's still the best though in my opinion.
Oh man drhey, I would sell a kidney to have seen that show. Am looking forward to seeing Peter at the May Knoxville concert. It won't be the same as seeing the "real" Chicago from '69 to '85, but I know I will enjoy just seeing and hearing Peter sing.
You know what? Jason Scheff,Peter Cetera's successor as Chicago's bassist, couldn't make pimples on Cetera's face or ass. CETERA RULES!!! SCHEFF BLOWS!!!!
Peter never does a show without any Chicago material. You'll hear him do great tunes like YOU'RE THE INSPIRATION*,STAY THE NIGHT**,IF YOU LEAVE ME NOW*,FEELING STRONGER EVERY DAY*,JUST YOU 'N ME*,HARD HABIT TO BREAK**,CALL ON ME**,25 OR 6 TO 4* and QUESTIONS 67 & 68**. *most likely **possibly
Wow, this was recorded on my 6th birthday!!

It's too bad that the studio version hasn't been posted; practically every other cut from this LP was posted. Bummer.

Tremendous video, too! Lee Loughnane's Locks are "to die for"!!! Love the sound of that great trpt, as well (trpt geek!).
Fantastic sound quality, for a 'live' 1970's recording - lovingly preserved, no doubt....

Without any doubt, by far the best version which is left on Y/T - T-Kath & the brass are just plain incredible!!!!!!
Thanks a couple mil, "drhey19"!

Let me know how that show is!
I just saw Peter on a PBS beg-a-thon with David Foster called Hitman. Cetera sounded excellent but not as good as when he was with Chicago.

What an awesome beginning for Chicago with this song. I love it. Thanks for posting it drhey19. Loved the horns especially.

You are welcome. Chicago opened with this song the first time I saw them. What a profound memory!
