They are Pronghorn Antelope, but wouldn't that sound retarded in the song. Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, and the deer and pronghorn antelope play. What you are saying is correct, but I say fail, because it doesn't matter.
The Proghorn are only Proghorn - sometimes known as the Proghorn Antelope for it's resemblence to the antelope and is indigenious to North America. True antelope have been imported for well over 100 years to North America....safe to say the songwriter as well as the singer here knew what the song was about and if you don't like it - don't listen.
@headly66 No they are not, but they are still American antelope....therefore they are antelope.....just like the term "indian" was given because they had thought that they landed in india.
They are not antelope, not even in the same species, just because you call something a name does not make it one. Babe Ruth was call the Sultan of Swat, that does not make him a Sultan.
@headly66 No one is saying that they are genetically antelope. The point is that the term "antelope" used in this song is relevant because that's what they called them and what we call them. I dont know If you have ever looked at a African antelope and then looked at an American antelope.....they are very similar and I can see why they would call them antelope.
May be there are no american antelopes. What do I know anyway? however, a quick search in google under "american antelope" renders lots of pages showing pictures of these animals. I do not care, but do not tell me to "google it better".
@tarquin45 There ARE antelope in 'the Americas'....... presuming of course that you are referring to N. America.... I am pleased to report that Antelope still run wild in several states out in the mid west.
@tarquin45 Not a good point. There were back in the day...at least is what they called them. This song is entirely accurate. Do a little research. Wow.
@headly66 The Pronghorn antelope is the fastest North American land animal, capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 miles per hour. The pronghorns speed is its main defense against predators. ( Google it).
@headly66 nor are there any buffalo. When the settlers came form the old world our pronghorn looked just like antelope and our bison looked like buffalo so the name stuck.
@ko6918 No they are not, but they are still American antelope....therefore they are antelope.....just like the term "Indian" was given because they had thought that they landed in India.
@kristinlukow There are no antelope in the Americas and never have been. Just because someone is misinformed and believes something is something else doesn't make it so, just as the native Americans aren't Indians.
@NordicHealer Why do people here continue to attempt to tell me the same thing over and over. There are no antelope in the Americas, I don't care what you call them they are not in the antelope family, not even in the same species.
@headly66 Term antelope referring to many even toed ungulate species.North American pronghorn antelope is not a true antelope but is of the family antilocapridae. This song was written in the 1870's when people were not as educated or so anal as people today.Thank you
Nor are there Buffalo. HOWEVER, though neither species are technically what people call them, they still call them that. Why? Because the people who 'found' this country and started naming everything just called them what they where similar to, that they already knew of.
The names just stuck after some hundred years of use and no technicality will stop it from STILL being used.
No matter what, you will lose this colloquial naming 'argument'.
@nschroeder7 That's nice to hear, I'm sure it's lovely - but they are Pronghorn - not antelope no matter what you call them. Jack Nicklaus was called the "Golden Bear" - but he wasn't a bear.
We have Pronghorn Antelope. thought technically not an antelope yet that is what the song is referring to.
Go to California. You will see Antelope Valley, Antelope Hills, and other place names that indicate that Pronghorns were very common until the turn of the last century. Nowadays, travel through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana and you can't avoid seeing the Pronghorn Antelope.
Are you an American, or an Easterner that you don't know this?

The Pronghorn is not an antelope, that's just a name. it's a Antilocapridae, the last of it's species. Not related to the antelope at all.
