People tend to misunderstand Beefheart. They think he was being weird for the sake of it. But he wasn't, his music is intensely expressive and emotional, it's kind of like musical expressionism. When I am in an intense, depressed or desolate mood, his music is the only thing I can relate to. You might say he was an emo ahead of his time (and a lot of emo bands have actually been influenced by him).
