  • This is probably the song I would like played at my funeral; hopefully not too soon. It's simply an amazing, moving piece of art.

  • This is the song that filled me with passion to be a songwriter when i was 15/16

  • Absolute masterpiece by R.E.M.

  • alguma coisa acontece em meu coração, é o R.E.M chegando no verão.

pra curtir o carnaval no Rio de janeiro.

  • The first time I listened to this song, I instantly fell in love with REM, and I haven't been able to stop listening to them since...

  • I can't say how much I love this song. It's a music and lyrical masterpiece. Storytelling through the beautiful harmonies and flowing melody. Poignant and uplifting. Thank you REM for giving us "Find The River."

  • REM's best & most beautiful song. People talk about REM in the same way as Coldplay & U2, but they are much more important - REM can instantly put a lump in your throat with their music & unrivalled vocals. I'm a complete metalhead, but don't mind admitting to loving REM to anyone who asks. Michael Stipe is & always will be in my top 5 vocalists.

  • Greatest song ever written.

  • just watched the new niki minaj song (if you can call it that) had to come here to restore my faith in humanity.

  • just one of the best songs ever, from any band, its just simply surreal, such an unappreciated song to the mass lemmings which salivate at radio. I am glad those of us here understand its powerful way to get under our skin, into our psyches and tell us, in some subtle way, how wonderful such tunes can etch our very lives.

  • so good to hear this again after so many years still beautiful.

great song from a great band.

  • When I put R.E.M. on, I start dribbling. I love them.

  • i love this song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just take 3.51 of your life, press play, turn of your monitor and turn of the light. And then listen. Only listen. Paradise for your ears. Best song ever.

  • so beautiful!

  • ahhhh.....finally some music!

  • One of the best album closers ever.

  • Hard to choose between this and 'Fall On Me' as my favourite REM song, with 'World Leader Pretend' a close third

  • @mimbrenos These three songs, Orange Crush, and Driver 8 are my five favorite REM songs. REM was a rare talent in the time of one-hit wonders in the MTV era.

  • Beautiful. Gorgeous. Heart rending. Best REM song. Ever.

  • Best.REM song.Ever.

  • @jphirn Best song ever.

  • This band and its Georgia origins drew me to that state in 1986, and even though I departed in the summer of 1990 I took them with me on the miles down roads and rivers far away.

  • I <3 REM!!!

  • this ones for my ex misses !! we used to come home from the pub drunk and listen to REM all night long !! this was her favorite so CJ this is for you !! i will always remember the times together and thank u for the son you gave me !!

  • rem sintoniza comigo. e tudo está ficando para trás...

  • me encanta esta cancion

  • che dire.........grazie di tutto!!!;-)

  • Interesting seeing Billy Berry play bass. Underscores what a key contributor to the band he was, and how much his leaving hurt in 1997.

  • Once an REM fan...always an REM fan.

  • I never realized the great span of their fan base until I played this song in my store in my one day and heard a middle aged lady singing along to this song one day. This will always be one of my favorite songs by them. Listening to it always brings me back to my sophomore year in high school.

  • @brewluvr I think its more of the mainstream breakthrough success of Out of Time and Automatic For The People that caused that woman to be singing along to this song. A lot of people like rem. But a lot of them have never listened to IRS stuff or anything after Monster. That woman singing shows how successful REM became at that time.

  • One of my all time favorite songs, so I suppose as good a place as any to say thank you REM. You guy were and are truly special.

  • Thanks, R.E.M.

  • I never noticed how much the chorus sounds like Rocky Mountain High by John Denver.

  • 2 people will never find the river.

  • There are only a few artists whose music helps me through the hard times, R.E.M. is one of them. I love this song!!

  • Can't stop listening to this song here... The one that, as others say, shaped me into liking music, in general. Guess I'm not the only one. Cheers to the perfect melodies' makers!

  • All the best guys.

  • REM, thank you so much for everything! I can't say how important you guys were to me. I learned to listen to music listening to you guys, and, if now I know so many of your songs by heart, it's because I felt they could express my emotions better than anyone else. Thank you for making me who I am today.

  • Thank you R.E.M of shaping my generation. 1980-2011. Many road trips, night home alone, and nights with friends listening to your great music. This song was what made me come out and be me. Thank you and peace.

  • flood of memories commmmming back!! It's '92, I'm a sophomore in H.S., this song and album are both great!! It didn't back then, but now for some reason, I feel like crying, not sure why.

  • @dennisjr77 The song back then didnt stir your heart with memories of people gone and dreams of people yet to come. It does now.

  • I love how Automatic for the People ends with Nightswimming and then this, Find the River. They always felt like the perfect songs to end the perfect album. I like how both deliver poignant imagery of water. Farewell, R.E.M. You delivered it automatic.

  • I love you guys so much....you'll forever be my favorite band...

  • RIP REM... Sad day. Great, great band.

  • A truly great song. Farewell R.E.M. and thanks.

  • Thank you R.E.M. for this and many other gems. Farewell...

  • My favourite among many quality REM songs.

  • RIP

  • My favourite song in the world. Songs like this paint pictures in your mind, give you inspiration and a sense of serinity. Why cant they write songs like this nowadays? Music is fucked up, all done for fame and fortune. Musicians tend to care more of what they look like than the music they're making. Thankyou R.E.M!!! Automatic for the people

  • @sfchardy9 This song is as poignant and powerful as it was when I first heard it. I love that the Automatic album ends on this sublime note. Nightswimming is a great lead-in to Find the River, the perfect choice to close out their best album.

  • I say only one thing, thank you thank you.

  • So long then, REM. You probably should have called it a day some time ago in truth, but there were some great records along the way. This is my fave...

  • We're going to miss them, now they're gone.

  • Would like this to be played at my funeral. Although, if it isn't, can't see me being able to complain too much!

  • Such poignant lyrics...

  • Berry playing Bass????? how awesome is that? I dig the chord changes, the main vocals and the background stuff too. Great song overall!

None of this is going my way...

  • @MrUndercoverblues lets not forget "reveal" that album is ridiculous........

  • One of the best closing album tracks ever. And one of the tracks ever.

  • so fuçkin beautiful

  • nothing is going my way

  • @monkkey09 same here :P

  • Hugely underrated song

  • Who could dislike this??????????????

  • I think the number of dislikes (in this case, only one) says something about the quality of music...one of the greatest songs ever made!

  • I love songs that are like this.

  • Even after 18 years of listening to this song the lyrics still haunt me and bring a tear to my eye, this has been my companion for a long time and my love and admiration may wane at times but I have never let go. Love you

  • @nicolamcs yeah its a great song . hauntingly beautiful indeed

  • @nicolamcs

i totally agree- this is my long time companion too- my best friend as a song, sheer timeless beauty- thanks for thinking the same

  • Comment removed

  • @MrUndercoverblues I wholeheartedly agree. My favorite album. EVER.

  • "Automatic For the People" is my pick for best album of the 90's.

  • This is an R.E.M. video that just made me sit through a snarky ad for the GOP before I could listen to it. I remember 1992; apparently, YouTube doesn't.

  • Kerry, what is Meat Loaf doing lately? I think the answer is yes, ML is good poetry.

  • Is listening to Meat Loaf linked with being a R.E.M. fan?

  • I love these lyrics, pure and beautiful

  • Definately one of REM's finest. Growing up with this band, its interesting to see the band progress from melodic mumbling to this. A great piece of music.

  • @gazoo940 Then you clearly understand little about REM

  • The differences between poem and song may become less meaningful where verse is set to music, to the point that any distinction becomes untenable.

  • @ashpewl Precisely. A meaningful life is a rhythm, a flow, and a meaningful song reflects as much. R..E.M. gets it.

  • Love this song. Healing song, lovely.

  • this is one of the finest REM songs ever from one of the greatest albums of all time, end or story, thats just how it fuckin is.

  • I can finally cry for the first time after almost 20 years since the first time i heard this song...Damn your lyrics Michael Stipe... I love you you bastard :)

  • @wreyoG Awsome...

  • IMO this is one of the best of all of REM's songs - it's simply beautiful and gives me peace.

  • whatever shit hits the fan.....this can heal you......stunning in its melancholy.......

  • why have they all got sunglasses on inside?

  • fantastic song.

  • one of the best songs eva

  • Automatic For The People is a landmark album, and this is one of the best songs on it!

  • I'm gonna listen to automatic in the week,1 of the best albums ever by 1 of the best bands ever & they still are,any fans of R.E.M. you can add me,you might even like my music (i hope) ;-)

  • Me, my thoughts are flower strewn

    Ocean storm, bayberry moon

I have got to leave to find my way

    Watch the road and memorize

This life that pass before my eyes

    Nothing is going my way...

  • This song starts off as a prayer and ends as a testament...I don't think Bob Dylan can write better lyrics, and I'm a huge Dylan fan.

  • 1 person can't find the river

  • @idospeakenglish hahaha how could u not like this song

  • I simply love this song and this entire album! REM... the greatest band for all times!

  • wow i remember this album, it was amazing

  • I wish I had that dog

  • Alice in Chains X)))

  • This is the best R E M song ever it just is

  • @seekeroftruthandjust

    I totally agree!

  • This song & video are so beautiful.

  • My song...

  • @scottsclassics35 We all are mate. Nobody gets out of this alive!

  • 1 person couldn't find the river.

  • Unbelievably achingly beautiful, lyrically lovely song; truly piss-poor, cliched video. Did they just recycle footage for "Old Man Kensey"?

  • Rescue me :P

  • i love this song so much

  • @MrUndercoverblues AMEN TO THAT STATEMENT!!!! THE BEST ALBUM EVER MADE!!!!!

  • This is right at the top of my list for songs i would like played at my funeral.

  • @MrUndervoverblues Don't get me wrong. This is my favorite song (about.. ever) , but you are an ignorant dumbass. Not everyone likes the same music and it doesn't make you a bad collector or have a bad taste if you don't have a certain album.

  • I love this song so much. This is easily one of their best songs.

  • A truly great song. I play this song hundreds of times each year. REM is the best band to ever come out of America (which is saying a lot).

  • sooo peter buck's been listening to nick drake's northern sky,,,

  • quality tune!

  • At this time they were giving U2 something to think about, they just couldnt follow automatic up.

  • @Robcatist You obviously never heard New Adventures in HiFi which is universally regarded as one of the greatest albums of the 90s. They were giving U2 a run for their money in the commercial sense while releasing understated alternative rock albums which is a hell of an achievement considering that U2's speciality is ultra-commercial stadium rock. But that's just record sales. Artistically REM are on a different planet to U2 and, it has to be said, to almost everybody else.

  • @MrUndercoverblues ... also who doesn't have Hammerheart + Twilight of the Gods + Blood On Ice + Nordland I + other albums from Bathory is still musically small.

  • I miss the 90s'

  • Always brings me to tears, and the best closing track on an album ever.

  • thank you REM for giving the world your devinely inpired music!

  • REM are the soundtrack to my adolescence...and are therefore now part of me.

  • @kingboru2 Dude cosign...

Its really good to be a 90's kid...

I grew up to the beautiful serene sadness filled songs of REM

and i won't trade it for anything

  • @kingboru2 I'm exactly on the same boat as you, and could hardly agree more...

  • @kingboru2 ...me too! I watched REM sing this song in the rain on a summer night and this song still holds a special place in my heart! It takes me back to flannel shirts and my 1st car!

  • I love this song, its so simple as all great songs are.

  • I'm speechless. I honestly feel that any words I use to describe the feeling this song provokes will not nearly live up to it.

  • Beautifully haunting. (second only to I Remember California in that dept. to me) The Bill/Mike back-up is unsurpassed. I love all the images, especially the ones I see in my mind when I listen to this song. Best band ever, hands down.

  • @rem2267 Best band ever is Bathory, truth.

  • @DAVpopCZ are you stoned or just fucking stupid?

  • @1964chrissie Your shame if you don't recognize true genius. I have nothing to say to you.

  • @DAVpopCZ nothing to say?, I recognize a deaf cunt when I "see" one.

  • @1964chrissie Having problems with me (or with yourself)? Then meet me close and personal and I will solve your issues using punches and kicks into your vulgar mouth, lowlife.

  • @DAVpopCZ Wow, threats over the internet, anger issues? after a week! sense of humour bypass? grow the fuck up "tough guy" you ain't gonna punch anyone least of all me! You're probably about 14 ain't you? Go Fuck yourself and silly insults, "lowlife" indeed! what a clown, kiss my arse shithead!!!!!!!!!!

  • hahaha one person does not like this video....

  • love turned into music

  • Timeless piece of brilliance.

IM off to buy CIN tommorow it looks great

  • One of their best songs along with leaving New York although they have done so many great songs hard to choose favorates. AWESOME BAND there will never be another R.E.M!

  • Awesome song!

  • PERFECTION.

  • Excellent song to a excellent video. This and Siamese Dreams are probably my 2 favorite 90's albums, solid from start to finish. And Stipe's fashion from Automatic For The People and below just cracks me up.

  • brilliant song

  • fantastic

  • love this song

  • Poetry! If these guys ever get tired of singing, they can teach poetry anywhere! I love this song! Thanks for a great video

  • a class A song from a class A album. Note to kids today, this is what real music sounds like.

  • Since I was 15 I have always loved the part at 2:42 when the dog runs along the beach. So perfect.

  • transcendental....

  • super group r.e.m.

  • There's no one left to take the lead,

But I tell you and you can see

We're closer now than light years to go…

  • nice comment freakfire .. =)

  • best song ever...

  • absolute masterpiece...up there with imagine and bridge over troubled water...epic!

  • Absolutely beautiful.

  • One person has not found the river.

  • this entire album is awesome, it's stood the test of time, I can't get my head round the fact that it was nearly 20 years ago, you look at adolescents finishing school now and realise they were being born when this came out

  • this song is just on another plain, it's so perfect it's scary

  • @Iberotimuka rem's songwriting talent is on another plain to 99.8% of all other bands past and present. Most bands can only wish to write songs like rem did. They were and still are on another level

  • @Iberotimuka

It's "plane", but yes, a supreme song!

  • @cjmadura you're absolutely right!, I always get that one confused, like practice and practise, as well as especially and specially
