I never realized the great span of their fan base until I played this song in my store in my one day and heard a middle aged lady singing along to this song one day. This will always be one of my favorite songs by them. Listening to it always brings me back to my sophomore year in high school.

But a lot of them have never listened to IRS stuff or anything after Monster. That woman singing shows how successful REM became at that time.

They were giving U2 a run for their money in the commercial sense while releasing understated alternative rock albums which is a hell of an achievement considering that U2's speciality is ultra-commercial stadium rock. But that's just record sales. Artistically REM are on a different planet to U2 and, it has to be said, to almost everybody else.
