Good question Dan. We live in the suburbs (used to be more rural but no more) We hate the city & spend vacations in the country. Hope to move someday soon. I could probably name a dozen or more but here goes:
1. Anywhere near or around the Smokies (our favorite get-away spot)
2. Bryson City, NC (and waterfall country)(want to live here)
3. Mt. Leconte Lodge
PS. Love to eat at the Log Cabin Pancake House in Gatlinburg. (just had to throw that in) ;)
First I wanted to say thanks for the great vids and your unique perspective on our culture. Three "country" places: Areas surrounding Marquette Iowa, El Dorado County California, and the French Azilum in Pennsylvania are all must visits.
my three favorite places, humpback rocks visitors center on the blueridge parkway
2.mabry mill-my all time favorite
3.rock fish gap, near the blueridge parkway
to me humpback rocks is like home to me,i have family buried back in the woods just down the road from the humpback rocks visitors center.i live in columbia, missouri but i always seem to make it to virginia.i appreciate your videos very much.i am doing genealogy research on my "page family"of albemarle and nelson county, virginia
West virgina, Darn never been there. I was on my way last july, but my 2 year old daughter still did'nt like car rides and would'nt stop crying, so I turned around in teledo Ohio. maybe this year, now she loves the car.
Thanks bobi, we loved the area up near Gettysburg. You should check out (FoamHenge) on 81 it is near Natural Bridge on 81 in VA, there is also a very cool Safari there, its a nice diversion if you are in the area anyway.
I just read a book called Far Appalachia, about a trip up the New River that might be worth checking out before your trip.
thanks for the nice reply. that video is of a state park here in IL called Starved Rock State Park. It's definitely one of my "local" faves just outside of Chicago.
Went to school in Blacksburg, VA and one of my favorite places was canoing on the New River just north of Radford. Driving the back roads in SW VA antiquing was a great pleasure. Also, vacationed in WY once and loved the Rocky Mountain country (see video, Dude Ranch..).
Here's my 3 fav places in my home state of AL. Talladega National Forest (375,00 acres at the southern end of the Appalachians) Dismals Canyon (featured on the Discovery Channel special When Dinosaurs Roamed America-its vegetation and broad leafed trees are like those that lived back then) Oak Mountain State Park (our largest state park) I do love our beaches, too.
Great video! Its neat to read everyones' responses about their favorite places. : )
Ok, not to be a bother, but just because "50%" of the world's population live in cities, does not leave the other 50% living in the country. I don't live in either. I just live in a town. It is highly populated and the city is just a few miles away. But yet, it is quiet and suburban. So anyway, yeah. I just wanted to point that out.
I thought about that as well after I made the video RE: I suppose I could have gone with Rural and Urban for clarity. I was just excited about TMermans idea and wanted to get the question up quickly, I dont know why, I just get in a hurry some times.
I commented on your page, but I've seen that waterwheel/mill structure at 0.22. It's incredibly pretty. I was surprised to see it as I drove down the road. It just emerged out of the early morning fog like from a dream.
Good point about the "other" 50% living in the country. Cities have their pluses, but nothing beats the great outdoors.
Thanks for responding to my video. I dont get out muh in the country, but I would have to say my three favourite country places would be... Ardennen in Belgium
I know one... Not in Germany!!!!
