Hi! I have a question.. I have three rats. Bello is the oldest, he's from early March this year and the two youngest are from early June. I got Bello in mid April, and the babies I got in mid July. Lately one of the youngest and Bello has some nasty arguments, is that normal?
@mallebitch Yes, it's normal, all three boys are now coming into maturity and could be claiming alpha. Are there any cuts bad enough that it bleeds? We always say no blood no foul and let them work out who's going to be boss but if one of the rats is being aggressive and causing bleeding wounds, then it needs to be addressed and the aggressor should be neutered.
@jorats None of them bleeds but it's really tense sometimes. But yeah, I guess they are just fighting about who should be alpha! Thank you for the help :3
I just love Chief scooting around happy as a clam with his HED. Any chance of a video featuring him. I think people with aging rats could benefit from them. I've had many boys live quite a while without their back legs. They all learned to adapt to the "rattie wheel chair" (holding up their back end in your palm while they motor around on their front paws). Your knowledge and experience is always appreciated. I'd love a video dedicated to the older gents and issues they deal with.
@WillieDonaldWard I observe my rats really well and Meeko went off into a corner to "zone out" so I knew that he was stressed out, the grooming further proved it to me. I've seen a lot of rats groom when stressed. It's like "find a happy place". Even sick rats will attempt to groom when confused or debilitated.
@jorats ya I have two rats of my own but never have owned a hairless rat before and always wondered how you knew if Meeko was stressed. and thanks for the info.
@FriskyMeerkat I know that you're not specifically asking me this question, but my rat Fonzy developed HED around age 2 yrs and 2 months. It is a sad thing to see happen :(
@FriskyMeerkat Oh absolutely. my one rat Pascal developed HED at about 36 months old, he passed away at 43 months, they adapt very well. But there are some cases where a rat develops HED and it's actually a symptom of pituitary tumour. My Pony, in these videos recently passed away, his HED was due to PT.
@FriskyMeerkat wow I know my response is really late on your question, sorry. The rats can have a good life with HED for a period of time. They can still get around pretty well by just using their front legs, but a big cage with multiple levels would be dangerous for them. Also they require help cleaning themselves and they need a short food bowl and their water bottle has to be lower to the ground.
@FriskyMeerkat For the Chief, we don't really know his age so it's hard for me to say. He's had it now for a few months. Pony, it started when he was about 26 months old. He recently passed, he had a pituitary tumour. :(
I got a little worried when George and Ferdi were arguing in the hole. Then poor naked Meeko got in the middle. Geez I've never heard noises like that come out of a rat.
I love watching your videos :) My fiance and I have had 3 rats in total, our first was named Splinter and he was the most loyal and affectionate rat ever lol also the most adventurous!

This is so educational and helpful, I am getting rats soon, I just have to convince my mom to let me get them.

@omgtehratz Oh so it's an elderly affliction. Can they still have good lives with HED or is it all downhill once it develops?
