It is the same every year. Everyone says the Big East is over rated. Barkley hit it dead on. They are decent players with great coaching. During the long season, coaching shines through because they can handle the grind and win more often than not. In a tournament setting, athletic talent shines. The Big East does not have a ton of talent so they lose. Does that mean that you don't reward their regular season success because they don't fair well in a tournament setting?

One thing that has not been pointed out is ESPNs involvement in hyping up the BigEast. They often pull this act on many Eastern teams both collegiate and professional. The motive? money, money, money.
let me ask one thing, if the performance in the regular season is so important and this NCAAT is not more important than anything else, why were the PITT players full of tears after falling to Butler, but not after losing the first game of their conference tourney?
bottom line is that these kids only convince themselves to get up for 6am conditioning practices in october by dreaming of the NCAAT.

@rogerryan22 thats completely false. when discussing how tough a conference is to play in, you have to look at every team, not just final four contenders. a conference whose 11th best team makes it to the sweet 16 is more tough than a conference with 2 final four contenders in it because there are 20 games in that conference that you could lose as opposed to just 4.

I do agree that the Tourney games are honestly more important than the regular season games, wIth respect to who the National Champion is. That is the main reason the tourney is played. But when it comes to rating conferences you have to look at the whole body of work. The 11 Big East Tourney teams went 29-10 against non BE tourney teams in the reg season (with 15 wins coming in road/neutral games). You cant forget the earlier wins and call it a weak conf because they go 9-9 now

Look at the Big East semi-final with Louisville, the athletic pressure D gets to the Irish, forces bad shots, and they are not athletic enough to overcome those mistakes against a team that came well prepared to play offense, as well as bring the best D in college basketball.
Bottom line, is the Big East overrated, generally, yes it is. But it still has more 'good,' competitive teams than any other conference.

The Big East sucks and just a product of media hype. They better fall off the map a little bit next season. I don't want to see yet another regular season circle jerk by the media that ends in another NCAA tournament flop. This happens seemingly every year, it's gotta end sometime.

People say the SEC conference is the best in football because they perform well in bowl games and are perennial national champions. Not because of what they do in the regular season. Don't go changing the qualifications for conference strength just because it's basketball.

Let's face it. Year in, and year out, the Big East is the most overrated conference in the basketball landscape. Analysts always brag about how physical and tough you have to be in order to survive in the Big East, even though those characteristics don't always win ball games. ESPN is on the Big East's dick all year long, getting people to really think it all that tough, when in reality, it a big joke.

let me ask one thing, if the performance in the regular season is so important and this NCAAT is not more important than anything else, why were the PITT players full of tears after falling to Butler, but not after losing the first game of their conference tourney?
bottom line is that these kids only convince themselves to get up for 6am conditioning practices in october by dreaming of the NCAAT.
So don't make any excuses Big Least fans... your teams choked in the only games that mattered :(

That isnt what the tourney is for. Big East teams had already beat Texas (twice), Wisc., Mich., MSU(2x), Vandy, ODU, Kentucky, UCLA, Gonzaga, Xavier, Purdue, Duke, etc. They had already beat most of the good teams. This tourney did prove that the BE didnt have a National Champion, but in no way does it prove

clearly bias on the part of charles. if fsu had beat unc then he would have used the argument pitino used. the fact is that louisville, st johns, and georgetown had key injuries which contributed to their losses. the acc only has one more team in the tourney than the big east but because the big east had so many bids everyone is acting like its a huge difference and that the big east is a joke. all it shows is that the acc is top heavy and the big east is a deep conference

thats exactly the point the!!! acc has one more team left, yet they had fewer teams/chances to make it... and the big east is obviously going to be a deeper conference because they have 4 more teams than any other conference... the only teams that really matter are the teams at the top of the conference and as such the big east is weak... no one cares how evenly matched the teams are in the big east when none of them can beat an elite team out of that conference

@rogerryan22 thats completely false. when discussing how tough a conference is to play in, you have to look at every team, not just final four contenders. a conference whose 11th best team makes it to the sweet 16 is more tough than a conference with 2 final four contenders in it because there are 20 games in that conference that you could lose as opposed to just 4.

Its not like the only games the teams play all year are intra-conference ones. I mean each conference has already put up its share of prominent non-conference wins during the regular season. So to validate each conference's strength/ weakness on such a small sample size as a few tourny games is ridiculous. Why completely ignore regular season non-conference wins?

i see what you're saying, but ask yourself whats the point of playing those games early in the season, i mean if not to give yourself the best chance to win the NCAAT. bottomline is that come basketball season 2012, the only teams ppl will remember or talk about are the teams that made it to the title game, the team that one, and maybe the other half of the final four, because banners in the rafters are the only thing that matter in reality... not your team's games in november.

I do agree that the Tourney games are honestly more important than the regular season games, wIth respect to who the National Champion is. That is the main reason the tourney is played. But when it comes to rating conferences you have to look at the whole body of work. The 11 Big East Tourney teams went 29-10 against non BE tourney teams in the reg season (with 15 wins coming in road/neutral games). You cant forget the earlier wins and call it a weak conf because they go 9-9 now

The Top 3 ACC teams are left. The #11 and #9 Big East Teams remain, but the top teams are out. Richmond's still left, but Xavier and Temple are out. Michigan almost upset Duke, but Purdue is out. St. John's crushed Duke, but got beat thoroughly in the NCAA's. Tennessee beat all kinds of top teams, but looked pathetic in the NCAA's.What does all this prove? It proves that the tournament doesn't validate any arguement about which conference was stronger all year round. Its all about who is

Thanks for uploading that. I loved that tension all weekend between Sir Charles and Coach Pitino. Charles may not have followed College Basketball all year long, but he wasn't wrong about the Big-East. You can say it's matchups. You can talk about SOS and RPI, but at the end of the day their top 8 teams went down on the first weekend.To be fair, I still think UConn is an above average team.

Look at the Big East semi-final with Louisville, the athletic pressure D gets to the Irish, forces bad shots, and they are not athletic enough to overcome those mistakes against a team that came well prepared to play offense, as well as bring the best D in college basketball.
Bottom line, is the Big East overrated, generally, yes it is. But it still has more 'good,' competitive teams than any other conference.

Barkley is right on a lot of things, but the conference is still pretty much the most competitive conference out there, the RPI numbers prove it. But they lose games the for the same reasons every other good team might lose in the tournament, it's all about MATCH-UPS...ND has a much better resume over-all than FSU, although I got to watch FSU a lot this season & they are a very good (underrated) team, but the match-up tonight decided the game.
