Fighting Buu for the Earth and sacrificing himself was his final act of redemption, he proved to himself and others that he fought for good, willingly. Dabura on the hand turned his cheek when he was betrayed by Babidi. He fought Buu for revenge for knocking him out, so there was no real transition into him becoming "good" until after he died and realizing the greater things in life when he met Chi Chi, Bulma and Videl. Does taht make sense?
