However, saying the Scully era is great and the saving grace of the show disgusts me. In my opinion, the real declining began at the end of season 8. After the simpsons clip show, i could tell the show was heading to a new path. I mean, don't get me wrong, there were still some great episodes after 8, such as Bart the mother, The new york one, mayored to the mob, homer to the max, and lots more, but for some reason, the 2nd half of 8, and seasons 9-15 failed to be good as 1-7. But still, season 10 to 15 are WAYYYYYYY better than the later seasons.

I think that the last good season was season 16 in my opinion. After that they just ran out of ideas. Thhe simpsons used to be funny because it showcased every day situations and real people could relate to the dissfunctional family. Now it's just reeling in guest stars, trying to jugle politicle agender, modern culture and is too topical for it's own good. Hell it's even trying too cure cancer, which isn't a bad thing. Im just implying that it's trying to do more than it can handle. The movie was good/great because it could deal with such matters in 90minutes but the show now has little charm.
The early 90's seasons were fantastic. The ones in the 2000's, not so much. There's good episodes and bad ones. The one where Homer becomes Pie Man is worst episode I've ever seen. It's like a 10 year old wrote the episode. And as for "Bart to the Future", yuck.

They've let the show run past it's coarse so long that there are now more crap shows than good episodes(all from b4 season 7 or 8). If you shuffled a playlist of Simpsons episodes to watch and showed to to someone who has seen South park, Family Guy and Futurama, they'd regard it as mediocre at best overall.

After that the writes changed and the eventually the classic "Saddlesore Galactica" episode aired and it was obvious nobody that worked there cared anymore, and the show gradually died.
