This is one of those rare songs that could have come out in the 80’s, 90’s, or 2000’s and still been well-received. We tend not to think of rap music as having qualities such as timelessness - and maybe most of them don’t - but this one definitely does. One of the all-time greats, without a doubt.
It all comes down to the layers of sounds, samples, and soul. Then, take the authoritative voice of Chuck D with the syncopated or at least slightly pushed flow with the lyrics of the god. Real recognize real, but that soul is undeniable. Shout out to the BombSquad. Public Enemy #1!!!!!!!
This song was made for those of us who attended the 1989 GreekFest in Virginia Beach. Of course the truth was never publicized. The "Official" story was that we were just a horde of rowdy and unruly miscreants. Anyone who was there knows what happened and what we experienced. PE put it in a song for us.
@TheTMoney87 Part 1 - It wasn't just a particular day, it was the entire weekend. I was there in 88 too. There were reports of many participants being rowdy, looting and ransacking stores and property. So in 89, the police force tried to impose a curfew on us and we weren't having it. There were never curfews imposed on Spring Break (attended by mostly whites) so why should Greekfest (attended by mostly blacks) have a curfew.
@TheTMoney87 Part 2 - we partied just like a large group of teens and young adults from any other race would have. We were subjected to extremely excessive police harassment, abuse of power, racial profiling and brutality (in some cases). Keep in mind we were a conscious force during this error not to be compared to the 'rap' crowds. so when we had enough, we fought back. many of us were arrested and charged with assault on officers and even a few charged with attempted murder.
@TheTMoney87 Part 3 - I don't know what became of most of those of us who were arrested. The charges against my two brothers, about 5 of my phrat brothers and about 10 friends were dropped.
"History, not his story" ...awesome. So much for high school history textbooks glorifying Pres. Washington preaching the land of the free, and then owning +200 slaves... Who the fuck told you America is not censored? They lied to you.
This is tough relentless music.Tight innovative, samples matched by the vocal presence of Flavor Flav and the drill instructor mentality of Chuck D.Public Enemy was smart, and had something to say.Today's rap is intectually lazy. Now it's mostly hacks looking for a cheap hit(via MTV or BET)."Duuuhhhh I want a Bentley and uhhh lots of uhhh money."Idiots.Even their samples are blantant ripoffs of old hits. There is a really good song on Youtube...."No Jumper Cables(DJ Pawl Remix)" by Aesop Rock...
Minority has been re-defined in America.... The new minority makes under $150,000.00 a year... And the new minority has nothing 2 do w/ the skin color, or accent spoken... the NEW minority is controlled through their bank account.... "Brother" 2day = "People" - better believe that - raise up yer metaphorical hammer & start to work it out by VOTING out INCUMBENTS = those that have been in power
@PaulKersey108 Lol whaTTTT? boy they don't do it like this no mo Fam....The right way in full, no bull Talkin', no walkin', drivin', arrivin' in style Soon you'll see what I'm talkin' 'bout..yeaaaaaaaa
@cannibalonXthedead Rap is something you do, hip-hop is something you are. Get it straight. Hip-hop did not "turn into" rap, though I get what you're saying.
@cannibalonXthedead Not so. Rap is a form of Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is not just music. Even not good Rap is still Hip-Hop. Just like crappy states are still the US. This is great Rap music.
