I just watched the entire film and found it very enjoyable. It is one of Mary's little girl roles she was famous for, much like "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" except it's more sentimental and touching, and Mary's character is not that mischievous. Here she is a very kind gentile girl who tries never to give up and to find something to be glad about it every situation.
I am still amazed how well she played children being in her late twenties!
Always amazed at Mary Pickford, she was extraordinary.
I actually heard that Mary Pickford though that Pollyanna was a little bit sappy, but she wanted to give her audience what they wanted to see.Poor Mary, she could have played any part and awed and amazed people with her multi faceted talents, and she got put into a "mold" of being a child. She was still awesome,I have even caught myself wanting to applaud at the end of her movies.Thank you for posting this!
Amazing how Mary Pickford made a career of mostly playing kids when she was even into her 30's. I once saw a still from this movie that showed her character over her strict aunt's knee getting a spanking, but I've read there's no such scene in the finished film. So I assume it was a publicity photo. Staged spanking publicity photos (when so such spanking scenes were in the flick) were quite popular in Hollywood's history (Father of the Bride is another example).
yeah, and Joan wasn't happy about it because Mary Pickford wouldn't accept her at Pickfair.I don't know if they finally got past that or what, maybe you know?
Yes, you are right about Mary Pickford not accepting Joan Crawford as she considered Joan 'a mere chorus girl who got lucky' until one of Mary's famous vistors at Pickfair requested that he wanted to meet her famous stepdaughter-in-law. The person in question was Lord Louis Mountbatten so eventually Joan & her husband Douglas Jnr were invited to a ball at Pickfair in honour of the Mountbattens. After this, Joan frequently came to Pickfair for Sunday lunches with Mary until her divorce in 1933.
This clip was one I created, edited, and posted on my website Golden Silents. It has been stolen by many people over the years and placed everywhere, of course with no credit given to my site, which has been online since 2004. I think it's unfortunate some people have no talent to create their own clips, they steal from others, and then don't even give credit where credit is due. I had to take down my entire database of clips because of so many thieves like this.
If you want people to watch these films, then why do you have a problem with a wider distribution and availability to people? Why bitterly hoard such gems? Shouldn't you be happy that youtube is providing a new audience the opportunity to see historical clips like this? Besides, "making a clip" from a pre-existing film hardly warrants "credit". In this day in age, anyone can do it.
Actually, Pickford was about 27 here, and she continued to play children (but also adults) for another six years! You might be surprised, though, at how convincing she could be. Those curls, plus her somewhat small stature, standing next to very tall people--plus that little thing called acting--and you just might believe she really was 12 years old.
I love Pollyanna. She is a little optimist, and i love the way eleanor h porter wrote that book. There's no sound, oh right its a silent film...Mary Pickford great but she looks 20 not 11...
Very interesting clip - to think that at one time, this was the way EVERYONE watched movies. I haven't seen this entire film, but it looks pretty good - except that I think Mary Pickford looks pretty old to be playing the part of an eleven-year-old girl.
Well, THIS isn't the way they watched them. Audiences watched 'silent' movies with live music (sometimes full orchestras) in glorious, luxurious theatres. Watching a clip on YouTube from a lousy-looking print with bad contrast and no accompanying music can't quite compare. ;)
I once saw a showing of this in front of an audience that started out guffawing at it end and half way through they were wiping away sentimental tears
ahhhh there! You found Pollyanna!

Mary Pickford used to be Joan Crawford's stepmom-in-law when Joan was married to Douglas Fairbanks Jnr during the years 1929 to 1933.
