You genius. I've seen short films on youtube before (mostly shit), but this was fantastic! You clearly have more knowledge of film than the average movie goer as I see you have an excellent understanding of camera work; in terms of shots and angles. The film is very surreal from the transitions used, to the bare breast (nice!), the fat man with blood on his lips. These days, People forget that movies can be seen as art. You clearly didn't forget that.
Excellently shot, sound design is great, and the piece leaves you with a remarkably ominous feeling. I can't wait to see what else you pull off (and I'm impressed you haven't been flagged by Youtube for that naked breast).
Andy Fraser: I liked this short very much. Lots of suspense, great appeal central character, quick editing, quirky but effective, good lighting, well paced. Wish you much success.
No one is safe from madness. "Smoke" is the perfect embodiment of this idea. There are so many influences, moods and emotions. A very haunting short film! Kudos!
Even the surrealism of Tarkovsky, Lynch, Von Trier, Bunuel or Angelou all found focus and an emotional center around a character's dilemma, a story, two characters that you recognize as being in a relationship. Even with someone like Dali, there's a core to his images...melting clocks. The images here are well thought out, the editing is clever and the tone is consistent - a technical job well done, but like the title, it's smoke. Maybe like a memory produced by a sound? Of a past relationship.
Twisted, surreal, interesting, and visually challenging!!!
To my eyes its like a dark mystery that partially unravels and before realizing it begun it ends but I guess this is the beauty of short films. They can make you feel a lot in just a few minutes. The feelings I got while watching were melancholy, disturbance, fear, excitement, confusion, tension, pain, and madness but its all beautiful and "smoky" and the accompanied music fits perfectly.
After having coincidentally re-watched Timur Bekmambetov's "Night Watch" last night, the atmosphere and use of close-ups by Grzegorz Cisiecki in "Smoke" seemed reminiscent of this other Russian filmmaker. (I realize Belarus is no longer a part of Russia, but I figure both Bekmambetov and Cisiecki come from the same heritage.) There was enough interesting variation in the visuals to keep me absorbed during its short duration. I liked the sound design and choice of music as well.
Nicely photographed and atmospheric. Surrealistic madness is a convenient framework for story elements that set elements up without having to take responsibility for them. But there are tantalizing moments, a little eroticism, a little suspended violence, and a nice use of the silent film approach that made cinema the universal language at the dawn of the medium. There are echoes of Lynch, but at his best Lynch follows through and delivers the substance of story.
Haunting and creepy. The use of the cameras are clever. The music fits in with the scenes. It gives you a madness feeling from start to end , and you dont want it to end
I found this very interesting in a Lynch and Kubric style of shooting. Well done, can we expect a follow up?
Editing only problem was after the driver stopped the car and got out. He is getting out onto a street his first foot sounds like he was in a large empty room with hardwood floors.
Far too many films labeled 'surreal' are nothing more than incoherent imagery in the hopes of looking clever. Such is *not* the case with Smoke. There is a coherence and a meaning behind the beautiful and haunting imagery of Smoke that is reminiscent of both Lynch and Kubrick. Quite engrossing and ambitious film, Smoke, and one I'm happy to have seen.
Can Grzegorz Cisicki be the new Lynch ? The imagery , the haunting , the sound design is all there with little seasoning he can be. Often short films feel a little long but "Smoke" is so engrossing , ambitious and very well pace. Highly recommend.
A young man with a sensitive face muses on his girlfriend. Images of menace, jealousy, and intoxication flow through a short film that's a glittering series of handsome surreal pastiches that suggest Lynch, Fellini, Peter Greenaway, and others with striking sound design. The filmmaker, Grzegorz Cisiecki, is ambitious and talented. Now he needs a writer -- or a stronger narrative structure; though masters of imagery and sound are frequently a bit lacking in that area.
When the narrative is the screen - or smoke, be it a cloud, actual smoke or the silkscreen of the mind - through which we see "reality" that each scene is nonsensical is the point. The director makes great use of the camera to get clear shots and convey atmosphere without any tricks; expressive actors who can't rely on words for exposition and bareness of a quiet piano which seems to be its' own disturbed and haunted character. Well done.
I'm a fan of short films and of "surreality," and SMOKE is a joy. I'm always leery of a film pegged as "surreal madness"--since that can be an excuse for imagophilia and general artlessness, but SMOKE has the coherence that only artfulness can ensure...specifically, a character-driven engagement even in its "madness" and one that gives real meaning to that madness. That's what stands out most for me anyway in the film, even more than its visual virtues, which are considerable.
