There's a reason someone like this isn't more mainstream. It's not because most people are shallow idiots (although, they really are) – it's because this fucking sucks. Plain and simple. It sucks ass. There's very little ass left to be sucked because Tom Waits sucked it all. He's not deep. He's not daring. He's weird and his music sucks.

@abcshopper That's pretty rude. I'd be more prone to believe you if you pointed out a bit of evidence. Fact is you can take whatever you want out of his music, he's a dark They Might Be Giants. He sings about being poor, and unloved, and depraved, and if you can't find anything deep about that, then you probably need to look harder. It's an acquired taste my friend, and you can't be an ass just because you don't like it

If you haven't maybe try listening to the Tom Waits song Little Drop of Poison. It's pretty different than this, and has a lot of depth to it. If you still don't like it, thats fine. I just think you might like that more.

@Christember i didn't get him at the time his last album came out, but i him a chance and he's grown on me a lot. for me, he's just a really big breath of fresh air. he's really unique, really dark lyrics/vocals with almost cheesy (imo) jazz instumentals.

reminds me of something the joker would cruise to.

@Christember Give him a chance. Maybe start with some songs from the Seventies, like Waltzing Matilda, and keep in mind that he uses his voice like an instrument, to underline the lyrics. And he has great lyrics, often very funny, but intelligent, too.

I would have to tell anyone that Tom Waits is a genius of poetic and artistic presence. Personally I feel that there will never be any other artist who will have his style and words that could ever do what he has accomplished. I will always be a fan and look forward to his progression.

The bit where he sings 'wha whoo' yeah? it's nothing like the vocal he does on the song. In this version it's a bit crass and hard. On the record, it's melodic and tuneful.

yeah but on the record he was trying to sound like a woman but because his natural vocal register is so low he did the high bits in a different take so that he didn't have to go from low to high quickly which might be difficult for him.

@oscarkev190 he managed a version of it in amsterdam at a gig a few years ago where he sang it true to the version on the album. Don't get me wrong, I like this version...I just know Tom can be a bit lazy when giving live performances. Part of his charm.

I don't think he's lazy giving performances, it's just hard when you've been singing for an hour to try and change your voice willy nilly. If you've ever sung for any long period of time, you'll notice this yourself. Sometimes it can even be painful. So you have to stick with a voice that will last the night, as it were.
