There's a reason someone like this isn't more mainstream. It's not because most people are shallow idiots (although, they really are) – it's because this fucking sucks. Plain and simple. It sucks ass. There's very little ass left to be sucked because Tom Waits sucked it all. He's not deep. He's not daring. He's weird and his music sucks.
@abcshopper That's pretty rude. I'd be more prone to believe you if you pointed out a bit of evidence. Fact is you can take whatever you want out of his music, he's a dark They Might Be Giants. He sings about being poor, and unloved, and depraved, and if you can't find anything deep about that, then you probably need to look harder. It's an acquired taste my friend, and you can't be an ass just because you don't like it
I actually hated this song at first, but there's more to him than this song
@ImYourDeity After writing that I regretted how I came across. My apologies. It was rude. I tried listening to this a few more times and just can’t get into it. Good for those who can though.
@abcshopper I really appreciate you having the guts to be a man and apologize. Not a lot of people can do that.
If you haven't maybe try listening to the Tom Waits song Little Drop of Poison. It's pretty different than this, and has a lot of depth to it. If you still don't like it, thats fine. I just think you might like that more.
@Christember i didn't get him at the time his last album came out, but i him a chance and he's grown on me a lot. for me, he's just a really big breath of fresh air. he's really unique, really dark lyrics/vocals with almost cheesy (imo) jazz instumentals.
reminds me of something the joker would cruise to.
@Christember Give him a chance. Maybe start with some songs from the Seventies, like Waltzing Matilda, and keep in mind that he uses his voice like an instrument, to underline the lyrics. And he has great lyrics, often very funny, but intelligent, too.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
lol..How can you honestly listen to that with a straight face and say you enjoy the vocals? Great songwriter, but please let someone else sing the songs. Kinda' like Bernie Taupin and Elton John.
Did anyone else notice this video is spliced together from two separate shows? Half the time the mic is silver the other half it's black, it's still one of the best Tom Waits performances ever recorded.
@AidanCrowable I mean he sounds like a Muppet. A lot of the Muppets have similar voices. For example: Sweetums, Rolf the dog, Dr. Teeth from Electric Mayhem and various others.
I would have to tell anyone that Tom Waits is a genius of poetic and artistic presence. Personally I feel that there will never be any other artist who will have his style and words that could ever do what he has accomplished. I will always be a fan and look forward to his progression.
Can't believe that I have had a comment removed. If it was offensive or unfair, then i could understand. but to have a comment removed because I believe I was giving fair and genuine critical feedback Ithink is pathetic. Shame on Anti for being nothing but censors....I'm sure Tom Waits wouldn't approve. I will make a note not to bother leaving feedback unless it's sycophantic enough to be excepted. Forgive my own personal views differing from yours...
@SalfordWill They actually deleted a comment you left?! You think they'd have deleted mine for saying the word "turd". And I agree, he never gives a lazy performance and if he ever did I wouldn't care because he's Tom Waits. If a can of tomato sauce was filmed and he was talking in the background I'd watch it.
The only guy for me, that has ever been able to pull off the "soul patch". Seriously. Looks damn good on him. But anyone else tries... it looks like a bird dropped a turd on their chin.
The bit where he sings 'wha whoo' yeah? it's nothing like the vocal he does on the song. In this version it's a bit crass and hard. On the record, it's melodic and tuneful.
yeah but on the record he was trying to sound like a woman but because his natural vocal register is so low he did the high bits in a different take so that he didn't have to go from low to high quickly which might be difficult for him.
@oscarkev190 he managed a version of it in amsterdam at a gig a few years ago where he sang it true to the version on the album. Don't get me wrong, I like this version...I just know Tom can be a bit lazy when giving live performances. Part of his charm.
I don't think he's lazy giving performances, it's just hard when you've been singing for an hour to try and change your voice willy nilly. If you've ever sung for any long period of time, you'll notice this yourself. Sometimes it can even be painful. So you have to stick with a voice that will last the night, as it were.
Lol. I always liked the Rodney Dangerfield movie, "Back to School," when he's an old guy attending university & is stuck with the assignment of interpreting some poet. He's a millionaire, so he flies the actual poet in to give him the goods on the meaning of his poetry. After submitting the assignment, the professor reacts by telling him he's got it all wrong.
For me, the worst poet I ever had to deal with was John Donne. Frank McCourt (Angela's Ashes) said even Donne didn't know D.'s poetry
Long way going to Get my medicine Sky's the autumn grey of a lonely wren Piano from a window played Gone tomorrow, gone yesterday I found it in the street At first I did not see Lying at my feet A trampled rose Passing the hat in church It never stops going around You never pay just once To get the job done What I done to me, I done to you What happened to the trampled rose?
