  • 00:02 - 00:44 che guevara on guitar

  • Wow, wow, wow, wowwwww

  • Couple of things guys - Zak is a perfect replacement on drums cos he understand how to go with Townsends flow, as it were, an essential part of the bands live experience. And I presume the motto referred to is the one about dying before they get old? He stated 30 years ago or more that he meant in spirit, not body. I reckon they've succeeded.

  • no sh**.......and then just slaps his way through a few bars, whilst he strolls over and grips another from the mic boom arm......Fckn ayyyyyye.

  • 4.08 flying plectrum :L

  • I love the Who to pieces but ...I can't watch.

  • Skip to 0:45 for The Who.

  • I always thought the stutter was to make people think he was about to swear

  • I love The Who , but don't Roger and Pete embarrassed to play this at their age?

Well, at least Keith and John lived up to their motto.

  • Pino's playing was superb

  • 1:10

  • seen the cunt on the drums "ive played with the who!"

  • @billodditty and his dads ringo starr

  • The reason Roger stutters is to act as if he was on drugs. In the 60's during the mod period, pills were commonly taken to get a buzz. Part of the effect from this is really bad stuttering. He was imitating this as kind of rebelious act. The original song was recorded this way, so most people hear this song with the stuttering. I've heard this several times in documentaries.

  • man roger looks so happy to sing that old song he did so many times so many years back

I dont care what people say about the superbowl and being too old and crap, this proves that these two still have it, they play better now then a lot of groups nowadays anyway (cough* black eyed peas Cough*)

  • Regardless of the bass lines pino palladino is playing, the tone of his bass is rubbish. Far too mellow, no presence or bite. Give that man a Thunderbird!

Daltrey and Townsend still really have it though, despite being old glimmers....!

  • @JtheBs I tottaly agree. Pino is a great bass player but he doesn't hit this as the song requires. I actually recorded at Entwistles recording studio and used his Stingray (gold plated strings of course).

  • @Easyandy100 You Sir, are a lucky bastard.

  • Regardless of the bass lines pino palladino is playing, the tone of his bass is rubbish. Far too mellow, no presence or bite. Give that man a Thunderbird!

  • Townshend is fucking ripping with the senior shades

  • Liking the stutter

  • pino palladino on bass

  • It doesn't seem the same when they play this song and they don't smash their instruments at the end...

  • Who's this guy on bass? Not bad, but not a replacement for Entwistle...

  • Please zombie Keith and zombie John come back!!!

  • I love bass solos

  • they rock on! But in that version I miss the unplugged part they gave us at the woodstock performacne...it was so simple, but soo awesome :-)

  • "Hope I die before I get old." Well you're old now, and pathetic, look at yourselves what the hell were you thinking hiring that drummer? The Who have lost their flame.

  • Comment removed

  • @wannawinabear no. just... no. You don't like it, stop listening.

  • @TheMapleTop They've had Zak for 15 years. He's the son of Ringo Star, and was trained by Keith Moon himself. Let's see you get up there and play with the, huh?

  • WOW!! Pino Palladino is a great musician... and Zak, being an actual personal student of Keith Moon, is the BEST drummer to play this music after Moonie.

  • PINO PALLADINO=LEGEND!!

  • wait is that Mel Blanc?

  • NIce. Pino Palladino doesn't try to replicate Entwhistle's solo (even though it would've been appropriate here), but put his own spin on a f-f-freakin' great solo. He knows better than to go there. That's the mark of a great bassist.

  • Fuck i love Townshend's old man glasses, embrace it!

  • People need to realise when its time to call a day..

  • we need john entwhistle. sigh

  • "I hope I die before I get old"

  • If they smashed there instruments on this, they would have to have a hip op.

  • is it just me or are they jamming out the second half, improvising, not just pete.

  • @zenlee1109 The song was originally written at a slower blues tempo and was sped up in the studio recording. They have often jammed out the song in this style in live renditions, ie Live At Leeds

  • Hope I live till before I die!

  • Pete's a monster. Notice that he looses the pick before his windmills at around 4:07

  • it would have been better if pino wasn't there

  • maestrazosss los the who

  • jazzy palladino!

  • What a great band still, but the crowd is dead, if i was there I would be going crazy

  • Pretty damn good for half a band!!!

  • the bass solo of pino is a crap compared with solos That played john entwistle live with the who

  • @Hannover1980 spot on there!

did this fella play with paul young in the 80's(fretless)

  • This might be a really stupid question to all Who no#1 fans but is he meant to stutter and why? Please answear back because I've heard this song somewhere where he doesn't stutter :/

  • @TheKingBlues10 There are a few different stories on the stutter.. Roger actually had a stutter (look at the clip of them doing My Gen from the smother's brothers show, he stutters as he introduces the song) so apparently their manager told him the stutter was good cos it made him sound like he was pilled up, so they encouraged it. Pete also says it was his idea, taken from a blues record.. but I think the idea is for it to sound like he's on uppers

  • @MrModDog Thanks you so much :D

  • @MrModDog

Thanks for explaining this...I've been wondering ...for years...thanks!

  • @MrModDog Rog has a slight stutter when he talks...to this day...Kit Lambert encouraged the overally exessive in MG and apparently it seemed to work out nicely...

  • @MrModDog It's supposed to be about speed. After you take speed, you start to stutter and can't talk properly. Thats the reason they did it!

  • @MrModDog No he never had a stutter, that was a joke on the Smother Brothers.

  • @MrModDog Peter actually has a stutter but he tries to cover it up.

Should have been an Irish ppppppriest perhaps?

    lol

  • @MrModDog pete stutters on the demo, and the smothers brothers stutter was an act.

  • @MrModDog it was also on petes demo

  • @TheKingBlues10 Actually, it originally came in on the second verse to mask the swear word.."why don't you all Ffff...ade away..." and became so much part of the song that it got exaggerated...

  • @TheKingBlues10 Yes. It's a joke.

  • Gosh !

  • Who beats Zeppelin anyday!

  • oete still got the shit

  • w00t, love hearing them as old folks

  • Whoa! At 4:08 when Pete windmills you can actually see his pick fly away! He used to say, "If you're not bleeding then you're not doing it right."

  • i like the way this drummer just knows hes not keith moon so doesnt bother trying to be

  • Can anyone reupload this with quieter audio please?

  • The Who is certainly one of the greatest bands ever! If not the best!!! You can hear it!

    And I really want Pete's glasses ;D

  • Led Zeppelin is better than the who FACT

  • @slimyesli Led Zep - Great musicians, average songwriters (if you can call some cool riffs, stolen musical ideas and meaningless lyrics, songwriting) The Who. Great musicians (better bassist, less annoying singer though neither great, similar standard drummer, less great guitarist) PLUS GENIUS songwriting. Songs about things (not Lord of the rings and cock rock lyrics) The Who were better

  • @MrModDog haha no wtf lol my friend took advantage of me going to get drinks to troll on my acount lol he likes doing it for some reason, But i will still give my opinion i prefer the guitar of led zeppelin Jimmy Page is one of my all time favourite player true singers voice of led zep annoys me some lyrics are cool like stairway and immigrant song true the who better bassist better lyrics the who side but i prefer led zep i enjoy more their songs overall but i also dig the who very much

  • @slimyesli haha that's ok, I like Led Zep too, but I prefer the songwriting of the who. So I do like like both bands.

  • @MrModDog This is the funniest post I've read in a long time.

  • @MrModDog

Zeppelin and Who are both fantastic bands

    Over and Out!

  • @whiplash91 I agree, they have different strengths but both great bands.

  • @MrModDog I agree with some of this, but I, being a bassist in the tradition of both Entwhistle and Jones, think it's wrong to say Entwhistle was better than Jones. Both were masters of the instrument and Jones is widely viewed as a genius multi-instrumentalist. He plays organ, piano, mandolin, guitar, steel guitar, etc. Entwhistle played horn, banjo etc. Both were excellent instrumentalists and thus I would say equals.

  • @TheExiledTexan well I gotta say to me Entwistle is the best bassist, But Jones is probably second. I didn't mean to insult him, he is very good and indeed a very talented multi instrumentalist. Personally I give the edge to Entwistle on the bass though, but it's all opinion.

  • @slimyesli they stole abunch of their shit (Stairway to Heaven, their best riffs? stolen)

  • 2:57 just fuckin awesome

  • the knob that said this is old school missed the whole point of rock music....the whos version is the who.....what more needs to be said.?

  • Mr Pino Palladino on bass as well.

    What a player.

  • @gavbag1234 yes, but Entwistle's bass lines shouldn't be play with Flatwounds!!

  • Of all The Who tribute bands out there, these guys are among the best I've seen.

  • very old school this version by the who, but i prefer it covered by oasis then the original

  • Townshend is beast. I hope they make a new album for my generation.

  • Awesome! And they sounded really tight here.

  • Pete on fire, still has it!

  • is that zak starkey on drums?ringo stars son and ex drummer for oasis

  • @patnamuzikman

Yes it's Starkey. :) He has been their drummer since 1996.

  • @Shitfuckerino and he is the best for this job!

  • @patnamuzikman i dont know, i know he toured with them before

  • @patnamuzikman yesss, it's about 10 years he plays whith them...

  • @patnamuzikman fuck yeah!

  • @patnamuzikman Yes it is. I feel sorry for him really...he has to fill Keith Moon's shoes

  • haha i love it when roger daltrey sings "hope i die before i get old"... =D

  • @DonJulio18 its a bit late for that i think

  • @DonJulio18 hehe well obiviously they will never get old...you know in a old fart kind a way :D

  • kind of shit with out keith moon

  • Wonderful stuff.

  • This is an impressive example of how a great rock group has developed their perhaps biggest success into an up-to-date crisp piece of musical artistry.

@busteroo7: you are talking about one of the best bass players alive and if The Who and he decide to modify the bass solo it is for the benefit of the song. Why didn't you criticise the guitar solo as well?

  • i believe th bass player is pino palladino

  • yes it must be pino palladino =)

  • Say goodnight boys, thanks for the music

  • u really need to see the tv version that was aired on joolls holland--it sounded fresh and energized. The audio hears does not convey the zing and energy

  • shoot the fucking bass player , i mean for christs sake hasnt he heard the cut

  • quality solo!

  • zak starkey is great! not keith but a fuckin great drummer!

  • Well you know after all Keith was his teacher

  • yeah i know. great guys

  • What at? Chewing gum? mouth opening?

  • oh look! does someone think he changed rock history?

  • i love how Pinos not trying to play exactly what John played and just doing his own thing

  • the audio quality could have been better

  • u actually think the who are were better then the beatles?

  • Probably more so that Keith taugh Zak a few times as well. but despite that, Keith and Ringo were very good friends.

  • oh, you are a poor bastard, I would be so proud actually

  • Zak is great for the who. Once Keith passed away I thought no one could replace him but zak fits the bill

  • Wow - Pino's a great bassist - and he sounds just as wrong in The Who as Kenney Jones did (though Kenney was perfect in The Faces).

I'd like to see Stanley Clarke on bass with them...

  • pete kills the "talking about my generation" vocal part, and I know pino's a great bassist in his own right but hell if he wants it to sound good he need to immitate entwhistles original solo.

I know they may all want to "freshen it up" once and a while but really just stick to the original version.

  • yeah it sounds prettty dire i prefer it when noel gallagher sings it on the oasis cover

  • Maybe he just doesn't want to try and take on those bass lines, because it would make him seem as though he's trying to fill shoes he can't, and so sticks to a fluid fill that just fits the song?

  • youve gotta be honest great band, but theyve lost it now they aint got keith and john.

  • I wanted to cry when I heard Pino's bass solo. I suppose it's technically very good, but....

  • nice.... but missing Sir Entwhistle, and Sir. Moon.

  • still damn good, though. just not the same as before.

  • Pretty damn cool! Different, but cool!

  • Is the tempo a little slower here? It seems kind of heavy.

  • you people who say, "they arent the same" "The band is different without the others (those who are dead)" "theyre Old " etc etc etc are just so friggen stupid. Obviously they aint gonna be the same. OBVIOUSLY! But here they are, kicking arse big time. What more do you want? If you cant dig it, just go and listen to .... well.... something crap instead.

  • moon en entwhistle are missing and that influence the sounds of the version very much , also rogers performance isn't the same anymore, and the backings of pete are chanced, he pronounce generation in a diffirent way as he did in the sixties

  • They are just getting old.

But i must say, the drums and especially the bass (solo) can NEVER compete with keith moon & john entwistle!

  • "I hope I die before I get old." I sort of laughed really hard at that.

  • BECAUSE THEYRE ARLEADY OLD only Keith died before he got old

  • yeah Keith knew what was up.

  • @md47bot Hope I die before I go bald

  • Pete is next to god. Period.

  • i like the bass drum skins groovy

  • Pino is ok, but hes really the wrong style for the who

  • It's kinda weird to see them on A T.V. show now. It's like the 60's for all over again

  • Zack Starskey is on the drums, who is ringo stars son. he drummed for oasis and was taught by keith moon.

  • Have you considered the Who lost their drummer and Bass player and all that's left of the Beatles is a drummer and Bass player...Hmmmmm, The Whotles..?

  • That would be weird... but probably awesome!

  • Love the Who-thanks for posting this!

  • will they be able to play it in their sixties - i doubt it! and the original who version blows oasis to smithereens!!

  • i think that the oasis version is better too but the who version is a totally classic in the history of rock n' roll and only for that is the best

  • I still think the who sixties versions have more soul and more power. Oasis had to add an extra guitar and keyborads to come any way near the powerforce of the original four of the who! Gallagher is not townsend on guitar for sure!

  • And i'm sure noel gallagher and liam would agree!

  • blasphemy!!

  • hope i die before i get old ! about time you hurried up and snuffed it then pete

  • Wow.

Pete and Roger do ok but that bassist my lord they are bad. I think the only bassist that could fill in for Entswile would be John Deacon from Queen, unfortunately he is no longer on the scene alive.

You really notice the lack of bass in both the Who and Queen when they play now. Both bassists played like really fast, complex pieces but never stepped on the other band members. This bassist is shit.

And Zak is no Keith Moon but I think I will still see them in Sydney

  • the bassist can't be too bad, considering he's playing with the who, when someone else who probably is better isn't. the same goes for queen's bassist, although you're definately right in that wntwhistle and deacon are untuochable

  • oh and fuck that bassist

  • Yea, I miss John

  • hahahaha Hope I die before i get old?

  • Pete's got the perfect guitar sound for playing rhythm guitar

  • no le llega ni a la suela de los zapatos a john entwistle

  • zomg...that drummers well boring

  • zak starkey is one of the best drummers alive and playing with one of the best bands alive, so shut up!

  • calm down

  • and i didnt say he wasnt good i said he was boring which probly isnt his fault but what hes playings just a bit boring

  • legend, one of the best rock bands ever

  • It's great to see age didn't slow them down. Pete and Roger have still got it. Great show =)

  • Great version .......nice job !

  • awesome as usuall i love u who ...long live rock!

  • "I hope I die before I get old"

C'mon, you got old some years ago... poor Keith didn't, and we miss him so much. Even that funny and typical joke about their age... they fuckin' rock!

  • They refused to play My generation for several years for that reason. They tought they were too old.

They play it as a joke now.

The Who is the most intense rock band from the British invasion.

    The Beatles were the gods

    The Stones were the Blues

The Who were just loud and damn good at it.

The Kinks were the indie kids

  • the beatles were annoying:D

  • Pino Palladino is a great bass player but whenever I see him it seems he treats every gig as a Job. He lacks fire. Entwhistle brought excitement to the Who that Palladino just doesn't have.

  • nice glases pete.

  • keith moon's drumming ignited the who

zak is good but too laid back

the excitement of the who was that they always seemed as if they would come apart at the seams.

  • Bass player is NO John

  • que bien mr. mod dog , gracias por esta belleza

  • It makes me sad, because Pino Palladino is a fantastic bassist, but John was so unique ... and there was always such attitude in his playing.

That being said, Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam showed Pino up when they covered The Real Me on the VH1 special.

  • So true... That bass solo in the begining was AWESOME!!! He only missed like, one note.
