I actually came across this song on a classical music station a few days ago, and fell in love with it, John Barry has written some of the most beautiful music! I wonder if I can download it on itunes?
I was standing in a Dollar Tree when this came over the store speakers. I had never seen the movie or heard the music before. I stood there with my phone in hand hoping the station would say what the name of this inspiring score was. They did and I saved the memo. What a great gift Mr. Barry gave to us all.
I remember in the states of Kansas and Missouri when I hear this soundtrack. And there are more than 150 years, Indians lived in those prairies and millions of heads of bison living free
Brent Musburger: "Let's now take a look at the gentlemen who helped bring you Super Bowl XXV from Tampa Stadium. It was the finest of all the Super Bowls."
This piece was used at the end of the postgame report on ABC's exclusive coverage of Super Bowl XXV on January 27, 1991.
When I hear this song I re-live the days I spent on the fronteer lands with the Air Force as a youg man...where I re-live the loves of my life, great friends and the best days of my life...out there on the Great Plains. I feel freedom, excitement and then the very satisfying heart- ache of having loved so well and so much. ...thank you, John.
I could never figure out why this was not included in the soundtrack........and remember how all the radio stations played it over and over again..........amazing piece of music.........
"They were a people so eager to laugh, so devoted to family, so dedicated to each other. The only word that comes to mind is harmony. " ~ Lt. John Dunbar
I have loved so many great movies.....this is one of the best and I do love it. The music, the action, the personalities......all make this a movie for all-time. However, Mr. Barry what you added to this movie is greater than the sum of all its parts.
My replay button is almost worn out ;) It's seldom that one finds a song that you can listen to over and over again - for HOURS! Thank you Mr Barry, your legacy will live on forever. RIP.
RIP...while I'm sad he's gone, he'll never be forgotten. Interestingly enough, he dedicated this score to the doctors who saved his life from a previous heart attack.
Have a good trip John! Recordo una nit cridant a l'Alex Gorina per a possar-li una versió d'aquesta cançó. Una emissora de ràdio a fosques, un híbrid telefònic i un Lenco per a reproduïr-la.

This movie reminds me of my first dog ever. He was a black labrador retriever ad his name was blitz. Every time I watch this movie, I begin to cry because I remember all of the memories I had with him by my side. My girlfriend laughs at me but I think if she could've gotten a chance to live with him, she'd get it.
Both the film itself & John Barry's superb score are genuinely worthy of a somewhat over-used term: MASTERPIECE. One of my most favorite films *&* themes.
Many movies made in the seventies, eighties, sixties etc...all have a certain feel and look. For example you can see what era they were made in....(hairstyles, makeup whatever)
This movie is timeless and could still be contemporary 20 years from now
I will forever be a fan of Kevin Costner because he brought this beautiful movie to life. Thank you, Mr. Costner. I know you do not read youtube but, if you ever do, I want you to know how deeply appreciative I am for having had the honor to view this masterpiece.
This movie was my first Western and i saw it in a theater during the thanksgiving season of 1990 when i was 9 years old and enjoyed it. An awesome score for Barry like Black Hole and others.
Touching my soul! I always loved these movie's soundtracks masters like John Barry, Hans Zimmer, John Williams, James Horner, John Powel, James newton Howard, Michael Kamen, etc.
@alexstrat I could not have written it better. Those mentioned are some of the true greats. I am a bit sad when one passes on...what music was left to be heard...at least the angels can enjoy Master Barry now....
Such beauty is rarely achieved as was accomplished by Mr. Barry in this composition. It just might be the music of the heavenly spheres....Thank you daisy for posting this grand moment in movie history.
My favourite movie ever. when i got my keyboard i had to learn some of the songs from this soundtrack. If anyone else wants to learn a few of these songs please check out my youtube channel. I currently have a two socks tutorial and I am working on a John Dunbar tutorial.. thanks
I think this movie (and the beauty of the music) should remind us not to take sides. Even though it seems like Dunbar does, it's not sides he is choosing. He followed simplicity and beauty, along with truth and justice; not the kind set by cold logic, but by love... lol, this is coming from a scientist =( I think there is a John Dunbar in all of us, and that some of us act on it and some don't. A really nice movie!!!
@Aleksi535 That's true. At times it might seem that way, but the film doesn't wholesale say that whites are evil unless they're like Dunbar and "go Injun" (in the words of one of the burly soldiers who capture Dances With Wolves). Dunbar was just a man born into the wrong people at the wrong time.
@Aleksi535 Actually, the ones who are NEVER portrayed positively are the Pawnee. Whites at least get Lt. Elgin, whom Dances With Wolves seems to mourn after he is killed. That's probably the only gripe I have with the film. Though it tries to portray everyone as human beings—with virtues and flaws—the Pawnee simply serve as the same disposable, essentially inhuman antagonists we're used to seeing in traditional Westerns, in which Indians in general typically fill the role.
@TaintedMustard Couldn't agree more. I don't believe everyone from the Pawnee were evil. However, their actions serve a purpose in transforming Dunbar. While fighting the Pawnee, he says he felt different. He had always fought in wars started over politics, greed, power, resources and so on... he fought to defend the tribe from hostile Pawnee. Amongst the chaos, he found simplicity. And many people turn for other reasons (power and greed), but Dunbar turned for love, justice & simplicity.
@Aleksi535 I agree with that assessment, but I stand by mine. I just think that the portrayal of the Pawnee sort of undermines the film's message a bit. Like I said, they're inhuman in their depiction—the only time we see them is when they're killing people, like the stereotypical Indians of other Westerns.
Indian tribes fought each other all the time—almost always for the reasons Dunbar mentions—and that part of their history needed to be included, but I think it could have been done better.
@TaintedMustard Who are these "others" that say the movie hasn't aged well?...LoL...It's a cinematic masterpiece, and these folks you speak of are not qualified to comment. Oh, and there are no "stand-out" flaws either.
awww u made me cry seriously from ur comment..may god bless u until ur in heaven with ur grandpa sweety....i can always give u a bear hug until then :) take care and merry xmas!
I will always remember this film, the man who directed it and the man whose music will forever be in my very soul. Also driving across the country with this music playing and my best pal...good times...good times...
@Frajdsson Pretty sure it was "katonka", no? (That, and the coffee grinder stand out in my memory of this great film). Weird how such a monumental movie, filled with continuos sensational moments, should be remembered by such silly or insignificant shots. One of my all-time favorite movies, hugely enhanced by John Barry's musical achievements. I could watch this movie endlessly.
I had heard some amazingly beautiful movie soundtracks in the 80's, and had wondered, who was that. But it wasn't until this movie that I discovered who John Barry is. This movie had the magic formula. Great acting, great storytelling and characters, and behind it all, was a soundtrack that still brings a tear to my eye. I love this music, and I love this movie.
I once went to a concert performed by the Houston Symphony. After hearing them play this, I looked at the name of the song, and I determined i had to go watch the movie again :).
absolute Genius. Just when I thot there is no more great music after the Mozarts and the Handels...John Barry has learned how to put sound to emotion. Great sweeping violins, with the cello's answering, carrying it out to the end....mesmerizing
once again kevin costner this film will go on after im gone and he also what can he as a child growing up my favorite was gone with the wind now 1939 it is still a classic. so will be with dances withwolves. thank you kevin, no matter what they say about you you did it. you made a movie that will last the test of time.give his children more then that. will always remember this song and this movie.
Most beautiful composition in the world! PBS plays it while showing spectacular views of this great country. This ad is getting played less all the time, tho, so now I can listen to it for my "fix" anytime I want on UTube. THANKS!!!
This Theme to Dances with wolves put's a tear to my eye. When i hear this it makes me think of the buffalo roaming the open plains the indians they respected this land no fences no barb wire aw what a great movie. Terrible all the buffalo that were slaughtered by the white man. This is a beautiful piece of music by John Barry.
@tirhfilms Fuck Political Correctness and everyone who tries to enforce it. The WHITE man did commit all these atrocities against the Native American Indians, and fuck your little PC semantics trying to alter those facts.
@Wasserkaktus Who here denying American History?..The USA does not hide or revise its History...unlike some countries.... It is what it is. But remember.. Indians were no different than the Europeans in that they slaughtered each for land, food, wealth, women, etc.... long before the white man came. Te white man had better weapons and more numbers..The Indians lost the fight. As a Cheorkee friend said to me..."we lost the fight...get over it and move on".
And may I just say I usually try to keep out of religious discussions on youtube. It's really not the place for it. People come to view videos, relax and have fun but with such horrific suffering going on in Haiti I just couldn't let the standard rhetoric slide without voicing my own opinion on the matter. People will help people. People will ease other people's suffering in Haiti. Just us and WE can do alot all on our own. How I wish people had more faith in People
I've noticed that a lot of people forget that God stands outside of time. He doesn't follow the linear pattern that we do. He see's everything that has happened, what is happening, and what will happen. Whatever disappoints us in our lifetimes still exists after we die, and sometimes, if not always, they serve a greater purpose. We are lucky if we can see the good in tragedies in our lifetime, because most of the time, we don't.
...and you know this HOW?? One shred of proof...just ONE...that's all I ask, then I'll believe. Until then, grow up, face life for what it is and stop burying your head in the sand like a frightened and pathetic child. What's wrong with you people? Can't you think for yourselves?
@Jer1967 Why don't you think for a moment about what you just asked for. You want one shred of proof so that you can believe. What good would that do? Say I called God out from heaven and He stood before you in all His glory and did not deny all the evil in the world and did not explain why He "allows" terrible things to happen. Would you still serve Him? Believe, maybe, but as we all know, Satan himself believes there in God, so that's not saying much. Would you still serve such a God?

@Aleksi535 Certain groups of humans shouldn't serve as mere symbols when the film's intention is clearly to show the humanity of ALL people.
Again, that's its only stand-out flaw from my perspective. Still a great movie. Despite what I've heard others say, I think it's aged well.

The only thing I remember and conects with this movie is "tatanka"
Frajdsson 1 year ago 3

This is a beautiful piece of music by John Barry.

thanx

@tirhfilms Fuck Political Correctness and everyone who tries to enforce it. The WHITE man did commit all these atrocities against the Native American Indians, and fuck your little PC semantics trying to alter those facts.
Wasserkaktus 1 year ago

God always makes things right, in the end. But what is right, is not always beautiful.

Jer1967 2 years ago
@Jer1967 Why don't you think for a moment about what you just asked for. You want one shred of proof so that you can believe. What good would that do? Say I called God out from heaven and He stood before you in all His glory and did not deny all the evil in the world and did not explain why He "allows" terrible things to happen. Would you still serve Him? Believe, maybe, but as we all know, Satan himself believes there in God, so that's not saying much. Would you still serve such a God?
