  • For the Nintendo NES? So its for the Nintendo Nintendo Entertainment System

  • lololol ....the other 'nintendo button'!

  • im eating a corndog

  • the jaggies hurt my eyes

  • Just one question, Mark....even if you bought 3D glasses so you could see the effect, how would you film it so we could see the difference?

  • There ARE special 3D glasses for use with Rad Racer and other 3D NES games, but they were only sold in Japan for use with the Famicom.

  • I liked out run on the Master System more...

  • Thank you for telling me what "Rad" means, english isnt my native language and since I was born in the 90, the only time I heard the word "rad" was in that Zelda I commercial..

  • @TensonFlo it means "cool" or "awesome"

  • That moment where you ran out of gas at 4:25 and just barely managed to coast through the CP brought back fond memories of beating this game back when I was eight years old. Just slowing down helplessly...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE *blueep!* YEAAAH!!!!!

  • My first ROM for my NES, I only has 5 Years

  • Hated it Square's biggest fail to me next to FF 12

  • I had fond memories playing the original Rad Racer when I was a kid.

I tried out the sequel game as well, but it never came anywhere close to the original in my humble opinion.

I may want to get my old school NES set up to play this one again. :)

  • I bought this game just for the 3D feature!

  • for its time 10/10 :)

  • this is what burnout 1 and 2 tried to copy.

  • such a parody of OUT RUN for the Sega Master System... same generation, so it makes sense.i mean SEGA had this in the SMS 3D GLASSES, while Nintendo made you use you're own, but it does the 3D effects oh and, @MisterWilsonTV, It should be... or out run, which i would prefer more. thumbs up so he sees it.

  • just bought it and its well......... better than Amm BiBLE adventures

  • Vote up who watched all video! ! :)

  • there was a similar game like this one but you were able to shoot out from the roof. does anyone know the name?

  • @Schlurfilein roadblasters

  • @charrr2 thx, but that wasnt it. it had a miami-style and the driver had to stand up to fire from the "roof" of the cabrio. it was playable on arcade machines, in germany if it helps.

  • @Schlurfilein Chase H.Q. 2

  • @Snotnarok thx but that isnt it too. but your answer took me to another videoresult

    watch?v=YQU-xxmk6ZY&feature=related

    its s.c.i. special criminal investigation

year now i know it :) thx snotnarok

  • @Schlurfilein Bah dammit I was close, it is the sequel but I guess the arcade had a different name. Well glad I could help!

  • The night driving section looks simply beutiful.

  • @bazfanv2

totally agree! Plus the multilayer background

  • The dude narrating, isnt he the guy from the sound blaster pro demo....

  • Nintendo, we need a Rad Racer for Wii.

I have my original copy right next to my NES

  • They should remake this game for the 3ds. If you press the select button it goes to 3d mode. but back then...ehh. lol if they remake it, they can finally go in with the 3d effects

  • @MisterWilsonTV 3ds has a 3d intesity selector!

  • don't bother the 3d sux!

  • weee dandy racer

  • CHALLENGING AND FIGHTING AND FIGHTING THE CHALLENGE TONIGHT!

  • @Zawicki1 no way, you're just a kid! maybe when you're older...

  • This game needs to come out for the Wii Virtual Console!

  • @BenJabituya i hope so to :)

  • This game was so much better than Outrun. It has a flow that's just so smooth. The way the road looks as it's coming at you is so sinewy and has a 3D look that's just not there in other race games. Nothing on the 16 bit machines have anything quite like it. The 3D feature doesn't really work. It's hard to see.

  • @cinndave It wasn't better than the Out Run.

  • this talk about arcade machines makes me think...

if they want to make money from arcade machines because of constant losses, they should make a megaman for the arcades!

    ARCADE MEGAMAN FTW!

  • @littleboyred1

They did but in the style on a beat em up or Boss battle type levels.

What ever you want to call it. I don't know. It is a very good game though. :)

  • @littleboyred1 They do have a megaman arcade game, it was a fighting game. They made a part one and part 2. It's pretty fun to be honest. The remix of the megaman boss stage music is great! Check it out when you get time.

  • this looks good, but R.C pro am is also fun

  • ... never mind about that last post. i forgot its called ridge racer not rad racer...

  • wait a minute... doesnt playstation make rad racer games now? did they steal it off of nintendo?

  • A million bonus points to anyone that can mention a unique feature that this game had over every other NES game. (And, I am not talking about the 3-D option, either.)

Well...since I don't have a million points to dish out, I'll just say it...

'This game tweaks with the reset button.' Both, at the very beginning AND again at the very end.

At the beginning, it asks you to press start. Reset and you can't see that.

At the end, there's toony credits. Reset. It does the end scene, again!

  • From the makers of final fantasy 6 and 7.

  • I don't think they ever made another non-RPG game past Rad Racer II in all these years. Just the three NES action-arcade titles in the earliest days.

  • i always liked this sounds

  • i used to have a nes and it was a great console

  • I decided to try out Rad Racer 2 for the NES because of this. If you dig this game, the next one is even better looking and controlling. The only downside is that the music is not as good, and you cannot have both music and the engine noise at the same time. Overall though I would suggest it to anyone who likes old racing games.

  • Wow! 0_o The speed and scaling of this game is like AMAZING for an nes game lol its almost better than Outrun for genesis. Its incredibly smooth

  • I love this game, turbo when you're alone, slow down around cars, and avoid those fucking trees...Hey! Rad racer isn't just rad, it's realistic!

  • And, there just weren't very many racing games for the NES. A hand full (Perhaps 10-15) of top down drivers and very few 3-D versions. (4-5...maybe. One of which just cloned the Rad Racer engine.)

As for the 3-D mode: I never had success in getting the third dimension to actually pop...regardless of the television set in use. They're just classic red/blue plastic lense things, as seen from 1950's movie theatres.

  • memories. i love this game when i was little

  • ***** 5 Stars, Radical!

  • holy shit i remember wrecking and landing ON the finish line on the last level but it didnt count it so i had to restart!!! =)

  • I always hated it when you'd get your favorite music playing and then when things get frantic you mash the gamepad and accidentally change it.

  • I always called it a short wire in the radio. Never staying off or keeping tuned into one channel on "every bump". :P

Made better sense if 3-D was a menu option up front and radio was given to 'Select'.

  • I just got this game from a thrift store this year and absolutely love this game. I also want a pair of 3d glasses to test out the 3d feature. I tried following a guide I found online on how to create your own with plastic, sharpies, and a glasses frame. It did not work though lol.

  • you should be able to buy a pair pretty easily.

  • got that game too for 5$

  • I got this game for under $5 as $4.50!

  • cool

  • I own the original glasses that came with the box set.

Never got those to work, either. I think that's why Rad Racer II dropped the gimick.

  • I did finally get a pair of 3d glasses, from sly cooper 2 on ps2, and I still could not see any 3d really. Maybe my eyes just cant see crap like that.

  • ahh yes I remember this game. It been way too long since I last played this one.

  • omg my local pub has an outrun arcade machine

  • these days in the awesome scale there isn't any radical. it's a car manufacturer now. the tallest in awesome scale these days is Wicket.

  • It's...... RAAAAAAAAAADDDDDDDDDDD RAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

  • games evolved.compare this to burnout.

  • the message i wrote to this other guy counts for you too !

    lolz

  • You mean Undercover?

    XD

  • you mean for the older folks that can kick ur ass through a shopping window :P

rad racers da bomb, fuck the new generation games .. its all too easy - so easy its suitable for the next gen kids that would cry without a memory card ^^

  • of course im a lil exaggerating ;D

i dont fail to enjoy classics like oblivion or fallout and other stuff - but what the fuck did they do to final fantasy :P

rad racer for example was squaresofts first nes game ^^

  • ???final fantasy?what's wrong with it?i played like 3 of em so im not sure what you mean by that.this rad racer thing doesn't really look good to me:p if you like it fine but i like racing games like mario and burnout.old games are fun,but...

  • of course mario kart rocks, im from the 1980s man and back then it was a milestone ...

final fantasy has never been the same ever since x-2

X was the last good part the rest is for the trash compactor.

13 might be good, 14 is online again ...

  • im not from the 80s so i dont know about milestones and stuff but right now the games are good.like sf4 and killzone, etc.what i was trying to say earlier was that games now have more stuff than games from like 1996.all im trying to say.

  • thats ok and i get ur point - games obviously get better the more time passes by - but the era has changed so much and certain stuff just doesnt seem as interesting as it used to be - and it doesnt have anything to do with me gettin older - im still a gamer but i get drawn away if games are all about gfx and forget that its the gameplay that dragged people to lock themselves inside a gamers hut ^^

  • your right its all about gameplay, but it's nice to see a game that doesn't look blocky for once.everything gets boring, dude.one day it's the shit, next day it is shit.

  • ur right, but there are certain games i always return to at some point in time

  • i return to some too.they were fun.still are.

  • Comment removed

  • gears isn't hard

  • with lancer it is.hammerburst make it easier, though.

  • lancer is the gun i use

  • well,your better with it.

  • he didnt mention that if you press select it goes into 3d

  • 6:17

  • oh my bad i was skipping ahead in the video to see if he did mention the 3d mode

  • ok, cool

  • i just got rad racer today and the 3d mode just makes it a pain in the ass to play. (even with glasses.)

  • one of my first NES game

  • This game is one of the main reasons why I got an NES again :D

  • raaaaad RAAACER!

  • hey mark, i beat your 1st stage score by 36 points

:P and that's a dry run after 14 years of not playing this game

  • this is a kick ass game

  • this game kinda reminded me of pole position on the atari so just that explains this is an amazing game but i still think it wasnt up with super monaco gp

  • Definitely agreed.

  • Fighting and challenge and fighting that challenge tonight...

  • I tried it in 3D once. It didn't work too well. Then again, I really think my glasses were crap.

  • I almost died laughing at 8:02

  • the video is only 7 minutes long.

  • :L

    lmao

  • holy shit! betle in this game can do over 200km/h !!!

  • Very impressive, nice soundtrack and the gameplay looks fun! Check out BackSpace Reviews, we have just started out. Tell me what you think!

  • good game :D, did play this game at one of my friends. we never complete the game but almost .

  • was it possible to play in 3-d some one told me but i cant find a video of it..

  • yeah avgn said on 1 of his reviews

  • Get some 3-D glasses and hit SELECT I believe....

  • yeah

  • i spent hours on this game as a kid, and this was the first racing game i ever played. after i left this game back in the early 90s the only other racing game i played was mario kart until gran turismo finally came out in 98...which is another story

  • this game is alot like top gear for snes ill get it for sure if i see it

  • Still own and proudly play this haha

  • Better than I thought the nintendo could pump out. Very impressive

  • These reviews are amazing! I'm subscribing!

  • Square Enix needs to scrap FF13 and make a new Rad Racer for the next-gen consoles!

  • @MegaFan1994 Or King's Knight, or 3D World Runner...They've completely forgotten about all their awesome action games, now it's just RPGs.

  • Do you get paid to do these reviews? Was this game in the arcades or just NES game? Outrun looks better than this game.

  • Just NES.

  • He works for Inecom Company, so yes, he probably does get paid for the Classic Game Room videos. He also has worked on various DVD documentories; that you can buy on Inecom's website.

  • cool game. just ordered it

  • This isn't HD, to be YouTube HD it has to be in 1280x720 DIVX format.

  • thats why this video said watch in high quality as opposed to hd, but many of his vids are hd

  • And for the NES, because Outrun was 1986 and it was way better. That's why people still played in arcades at the time even when consoles like the NES got popular.

  • i used to play this game all the time when i was younger. great game

  • Excellent game, with POWER GLOVE compatibility, already seen on the movie ''The Wizard'',and the most strange but surprising thing,is that is made by SQUARESOFT...I can imagine a Rad Racer RPG made by SQUARE hehe

  • *You encountered a drunk driver!*

    Turbo

    Gas

    Brake

    Drive-By

    Barrel role<~

  • DO A BARREL ROLL! XDDD The best phrase ever in videogames and furfaggotry XD

  • Hotel Mario: "No."

    Toasty!

    PHALCO PAWNCH!

    You got, boost powerrrr!

It's time to kick ass and chew bubble-gum...

and I'm all out of gum. (Stolen though)

Along with many others. But "Do a barrel role!" is definetly one of the best.

"You know what they say... All toasters, toast, toast!"

  • huh? WTF?

  • YES!

  • Did I hear the Mission Impossible theme?

  • I purchased this today.AWESOME!!Keep up the excellent reviews,Mark!

  • um, your mom? i just...dont know how to respond

    to a comment like that....oh yea.....fuck you.

  • cool game ,but reveiw was a litte long 4 such a small game

  • Great review, here in the uk, the nes whas not the huge success it was in usa and japan, when i had mine, there was not many games for it,it took so long for games to come to the uk and europe.

  • While I never felt that Rad Racer for NES was better looking than OutRun for the SMS, I will give it credit for being way faster. Both were great games. I love the "rolling" sound effect when you run out of time and your momentum is just carrying you along. Classic!

  • I've noticed in ALL of the old NES games that there is alot of unused space on the sides of the picture, usually more so on the left side. I wonder if tube tv's back in the day had more overscan than the sets of today because I don't remember seeing that much extra unused graphics.

  • The hills are certainly smoother than the jerk-jerk-jerk hills that Master System Outrun was notorious for. Though Outrun 3D improved on it immensely with its lush graphics and grass and oceans.

It has less variety in levels of course.

  • Hey I have a neat idea for you CGRHD....

What if the home console idea NEVER took off? Like say after the 80s crash of the gaming industry, arcades experienced a surge in popularity and consoles simply stayed back in the shadows?

What would the world be like today?

  • fucking sweet

  • It Would be the same. Since alot of games would have been released for Arcade and sooner or later ppl would have wanted an Arcade machine at home...

  • I don't think do. I'm talking about the death of home consoles.... say Nintendo never released the Famicon/NES....

Or what if there was some kinda depression (this is all make believe remember) and people didn't have the money to develop these expensive home consoles?

Even if you consoles eventually did pick up, we would be so behind on technology.

  • It would be the same, because the COnsole would have never been made, but the arcade yes. So Sooner or later ppl would have wanted an arcade for home which could play alot of games in a single cabinet.

In the same way everyone want to have a Threat at home.

  • awesome

  • RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD RACER! LOL XD

  • No, YOU are a faggot. RandomizerStewart :)

  • You clearly found the message!

  • i found it, its ''faggot''...

  • Oh the radical memories :.)

Here is a cheat, on the demo screen when the car is driving itself. Press the B or A button (can't remember really) you will see the rev bar above the screen light up. Each light up represents a level. Then hit select start at the same time and you get to jump ahead to that track. I don't know if that is the right code, but you get to play against other cool cars. Thanks CGR for the flash back :)

  • Although the Master System was more powerful than the NES, this actually has better graphics, or at least a much better frame rate, than the MS ports of OutRun and Hang-On. Developing the game from the ground up for the console must have been a huge benefit to Square.

  • Hated the Google Ad. Could they remember me turned it off.

Or i have to download content before i watch it.

    DAMN

  • Nice smooth track scrolling. Good hill effects. Good lateral sky movement.

    Pretty decent for the NES!

  • one can handle only so much radness until ya reach radical overload.

  • this guy just loves this game so much. i love how he talks about this game like its cutting edge technology. the cars have adamantium roll cages was the best part haha.

  • Rad Racer! yeah! this game is awesome I remember playing it a lot, I think its the best driving game on the NES.

  • rad racer and 3d world runner are square best games!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah äähm and some final fantasy äähem

  • Meh, you're not missing out on anything in the 3D mode. 3D mode was poorly implamented. The red&blue sprites of alot of things, like clouds, are so far apart that it doesn't produce any 3D effect. Really the only thing in the game that was center correctly in 3D mode is the player's car & the road....

  • thats rad ;)

  • maaan, the sound of the hit!!!thats so amazziing

that makes me feel so awesome inside,i just miss that sound so much, its frikking AWESOME

  • Square used to make driving games? You learn something new every day. They'll probably never do something like this again unless it involves chocobos.

  • They made Driving Emotion Type S for the PS2.

  • i hav that game but never found any 3d glasses

  • i love this game

  • games now a days should have the 3d mode, that would make them much better. just think what gears of war would be like with a 3d mode, and blood spattering out of the screen.

  • COOl

  • i love you man your so cool

  • love this game,a nes must have!

  • Yeah this is one of my favorite oldschool racers for the home consoles next to Top Gear for the SNES. It was always such a thrill to run out of time and then just coast through the next check point and then start speeding again. The crashes were so wild haha

All the levels in the game were well designed and it had a great sensation of speed as well. Great review here and yes the sequel was nowhere near as good.

  • This game was freakin sick! I forgot about the 3D mode. Pure greatness!
