My dad served with the 3rd Armored from it's formation in Louisiana to desert training in the Mojave to the end of the war. We know very little of his experiences as a tank commander. We do know that he was blown out of the top of his tank and had some shrapnel wounds that weren't severe enough to send him home. Beyond that he'd never talk about it. He passed away in 1993. He was Sgt. John C. Lego from Chicago.
My grandpa was in the 3AD also. Phillip Popp from Nebraska. He got tore up pretty bad. He never spoke of the war and we were never really allowed to ask. All we have left are a couple boxes of all the loot he brought back from stuff he took off of dead Germans. Who knows what stories that stuff could tell.
I't a shame that your grandfather isn't here to share his stories in person - but at least his pictures are being shared. I miss my mom more than I can say and your pictures made me smile.Mom would have loved to see your post. Back in the day Mom was a dead ringer for Heady Lamar (hope you know who that was). She did entertain with Red Skelton - If you see anyone who looks like her can you post it? It would be unbelievable if you had a picture of my mom. (My Dad would flip out).
I was blown away when I saw this!! I recently lost my mom and couldn't believe it when I saw this. She was assigned to the Third Armored Division while she performed for the USO. She has pictures of the guys!! and has told us many stories of her time with the Third Armored Division. What a small world!
That is really cool. I found some pictues of a USO show in my grandfather's collection. I'll have to look at them again. I know Red Skelton was in one of the pictures.
He passed away in 1997, before my interest in history so I don't have any stories behind his pictures. It's great that your mom shared those stories with you.
Wow, very moving video. I'd hate to think what the world would be like today without people like our Grandads! God bless to all the men and women who laid down their lives so that we could have our freedom.
Awesome. Moving. I wish there were more efforts made to remind us and educate us of the brave soldiers that sacraficed life and limb to allow us to enjoy the freedom we now take for granted. Regardless, no effort can match the one this educator who made this particular video.
